It was revealed earlier this month, in what was thought to be a bit of a head-scratching move, that famed retired basketball player Michael Jordan would be gracing the cover of 2K Sports' upcoming NBA 2K11. Today, 2K Sports revealed the reason behind that move: a new mode within the game called "The Jordan Challenge".

This new mode is to allow players to experience 10 of the most famous games in Michael Jordan's career. Games include Jordan's "self-described greatest game," a beating of the Cavaliers by 69 points in March 1990, an "attempt to battle back from the flu" to defeat the Jazz in Game 6 of the 1997 finals, or his last game as a Chicago Bull on June 14th, 1998.While there's now a reason for having Michael Jordan as the cover athlete for the game, it's still a bit odd that 2K Sports isn't featuring a current NBA player. What say you, ballers? Is this a good move or should 2K Sports stop living in the past?

He is still known as one of the greatest players and to have him on the cover is not a bad thing at all.

I was just gonna say. Jordan is a legend, and left a legacy in Chicago that (obviously) will stand the test of time. Today's players just don't seem to have the same level of integrity.

At the time they chose the cover, LeBron was probably still in Cleveland. And if Miami manages to crash and burn next season (god willing) then who knows where he'll end up next. The same could be said for most players these days. Chasing a bigger paycheck or a championship ring from city to city just leaves a bad taste in the mouths of fans. I say good on em.

I don't even see why the cover player has to be be someone famous NOW.

Last 2K NBA game I played was 08 I believe, but Jordan being in this alone has got me interested.

Odd putting the greatest player of all time on the cover of a videogame? Why would that be a "head-scratching" move? I think its head-scratching that you'd even write such a thing.

Does anyone ever give a shit about who's on the cover? Has that ever swayed anyone into buying/not buying a sports game?

Come on, guys. It's like having a WWII FPS and we all know it.

That's pretty much the definition of odd. I find it "head-scratching" that you don't understand that concept. Also, I have lice.

seem to think this is a non-issue. I think it's even better that he's involved...especially since when he WAS playing you couldn't play as him in most of the video games.
Besides, all the current players suck. I have no interest in the current crew of NBA "talent"

:D

If Jordan had spent seven years in Chicago while they failed to build a championship caliber team, he'd have left too. He wanted to win, but he had management that made that possible by adding guys like Pippen.

Umm, Jordan joined the bulls in '84. Despite winning rookie of the year and multiple MVP awards, the bulls didn't win a championship until '90. So yes, he did stay. And he only joined the Wizards after having established his legacy in Chicago and returning from retirement.

And somehow I doubt he was chasing a championship ring by joining the Wizards...

Why is it so strange to have a retired person as a cover athlete?

I could be wrong here, but I think he actually joined the Wizards because he wanted to manage them, or something. I think he may have had partial ownership. I dunno, I read about it a long time ago, but I don't think it was as simple as, "Hey, I'm playing for the Wizards now."

Also: Micheal Jordan is to basketball as Hulk Hogan is to wrestling. Don't expect to see either of them go away anytime soon, as there really hasn't been anyone as popular in their respective fields. Whether you watched them or not, at the top of their popularity, everyone knew who they were and even today that seems to be true.

But they did add key players prior to the championship. Hell, just getting Pippen was reason enough to stay. The Cavs added an over the hill and way past his prime center and didn't add another legit scoring threat until what...year five? And he was a bust!

Cavs fans have every reason to be upset, but they should direct it the right direction - towards the management. After all they didn't leave so things aren't likely to improve.
