I did actually end up getting that (I had a Border's coupon for like 40% off a week or so ago and used it on that), but as of right now I've yet to watch it. I figured I'd be better off just saving it for Greenland. :D

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, by the way. I appreciate it. I'm really looking forward to checking that out, once I get settled in up there. I've decided that the first DVD that I'm going to watch when I get up there will be John Carpenter's The Thing; but after that everything that I've been buying (and not watching) over the last few months is free reign. I mean, what else does one do at the top of the world besides work, sleep and drink?

Twelve months. December of this year to December of next year. Weeeeeeeeeee!

Work kind of spurred it on. It was an opportunity to get out of Colorado Springs and go somewhere that most people try NOT to go, if that makes any sense. I'm not married or anything, so I thought, "Fuck it! Why not get a remote out of the way sooner, rather than later."

That, and I had never been to Greenland before, so that was kind of enough reason for me to want to go too. It's only a year, right? No big deal.

It's a big compilation of Disney stuff. I don't listen to much of the cartoon based music, but some of the others are great. Actually, I listen to Beauty and the Beast songs quite a bit, mainly because I love to hear Lenny from Law and Order sing in a French accent.

Would anyone here be interested in doing a Album of the Week kinda thing? We choose an album once a week (any album, any genre, any time period) and at the end of the week we could discuss, post thoughts, etc.?
It doesn't even have to be weekly. Monthly, bi-weekly, whatever. I just thought a week would give us all ample time to listen to the album once or twice.

I simply selected artists/albums that I thought deserved more of an audience. What then I would do is put some effort into this thread: myspace, last.fm, wikipedia (band information) links, include album art, give a description of what I thought about the album. I'd then explain what genre this album falls under, yada yada yada (and so forth), for the purpose of other people potentially becoming a fan of a certain band/artist.

People Often Tell Me I'm Good At What I Do -- Astronautalis // You and Yer Good Ideas.

More Astronautalis on my playlist.

"I know I should have called you, dialed six or seven digits
Misdirected by reflections and flickering televisions
Sometimes I like to steal odds and ends from peoples' houses
Nick QTips from your nightstand, digging pennies out of couches
You gave me a set of sticky fingers and a back built for hammocks
This ain't no doctor's note and I ain't no blank canvas
It's just the way the man is: I'm good at what I do
From failing to falling in and out of touch with you
I wanna shake hands with the world and make mix-tapes for America
And find the time to tell you the things I normally find embarrassing
You've always been fantastic; I've been foolish and sub-par
Hope for your sake you're hearing this song in a bar."

Right now I'm watching Headbanger's Ball on MTV2, and some godawful band called "Kingdom of Sorrow" is playing. Seems like they're trying too hard to be deep by putting ancient Greek philosopher's quotes at the beginning and end of their video.

EDIT: HOLY CRAP! I've never seen a band rip off GWAR's schtick, but the band on now, "Lordi" seems to be doing just that. The lead singer even SOUNDS like Odorus Erungus.

I just looked up Kingdom of Sorrow and the reason they're terrible is because Jayme Jasta is in the band, hes a horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible vocalist. Well on top of that it sounds like a sludge/hardcore band. High On Fire is a better sludgy band (I once read someone describe High on Fire as "The music a T-Rex would want to hunt to).

I totally agree on Lordi, they just didn't even try to be original.

KsE was much better in the The End of The Heartache and Alive or Just Breathing days IMO. But I still enjoy As Daylight Dies from time to time, its got some pretty catchy hooks/riffs on it. You should try Misery Signals, they're a more interesting/complex/heavier metalcore band, that's accessible at the same time, IMO.

Protest the Hero fucking rules.

I find it surprising that you think that performing in costumes is the height of originality. As if GWAR's stage antics weren't a lousy rip-off of W.A.S.P.

But you can't argue with taste. I personally like Lordi and enjoy their music. Their costumes are of a much higher quality than GWAR and the comparison would work much better with KISS. Also every time I listen to Lordi I keep thinking about how refreshing was their award-winning performance in Eurovision, considering how the competition constituted almost exclusively of saccharine pop songs.

Yep.

They still rule though.

I mean who else could sing such a wrong, yet humorously upbeat, song such as Fuckin' An Animal?

Not to mention that their stage show is like something right out of The Evil Dead, with all of the fake blood that they use. Definitely a good time, and money well spent (at least in my book).

Lordi looks kind of fun though. I'm all for theatrical, zany metal and what not. As long as it's fun, right?

How in the world is GWAR a rip off of W.A.S.P.? Wasp were a little more theatric than most 80s hair bands, but Gwar? Have you ever been to a GWAR show? They're a band with a story. I'd compair their stage show to something like Alice Cooper's, if anything. For example, the last one i saw featured a dead baby being ripped out of Lacy Peterson's corpse and swung around Oderus' head, A decapitated Bush doll that sprayed blood over the audience for the entire song, and Oderus' alien dong shooting green goo to cross the streams. I can't say I remember Blackie Lawless doing anything like that.

As for Lordi, they don't suck outright. I can't even really fault them for being rip offs. They sound like an average power metal band that grabbed onto an interesting, if already exploited gimmick. Still, they're no GWAR and you should be sacraficed to the Gor Gor.

Yeah Veil of Maya and After the Burial, they have some talent, but put it to NO good use at all. They both have super clicky bass drums as well. I saw Veil of Maya on Summer Slaughter and I was really, really, really unimpressed. They have a couple decent songs each, but they could be doing a lot more.

As for BTM, I found on Dystopia there weren't as many breakdowns, which kind of made Mechanics a little boring. I love a good breakdown but they didn't really use them to good effect, on this one their fewer, and the actually riffs had a lot more punch and are a little catchier, I've had Reign of Terror, No Future, and Procreating the Infection stuck in my head for a while. Maybe its because I've listened to Dystopia a lot more then I did Mechanics.

A majority of those things are restricted to death/metalcore. "Karate" pits and two-stepping formed in hardcore and they're not anymore ridiculous that any other mosh pit except they have become increasingly violent lately. I also don't understand hating fashion choices. No matter what you look like, someone thinks like you look like a tool.

I like some metalcore. Mostly bands that have something original going for them, Between The Buried and Me (Obviously, though they have evolved into a more progressive metal act over the years), Converge (again a genre bender), The Banner, Darkest Hour, Poison The Well... Like you said, a lot of the mainstays of the genre. I started listening to hardcore and metalcore when the genre was really getting it's legs so I still like a lot of those bands, and I still enjoy some of the new ones occasionally.

I find myself listening to mostly traditional hardcore bands nowadays, which is nice because some of the best bands have been popping up in the last few years and it's a great time to be a part of it.

I agree with you for the most part. You have to understand though that I'm in High School and surrounded by this stuff that I don't really like. Kids looking ridiculous, acting ridiculous and blasting their music out of their headphones to prove their br00tal. Sorry if I came off as a douche.

Ironically, the scene kids hate the metalcore bands with talent like Unearth, All That Remains, Protest the Hero, etc. It makes me an Angry Panda

The majority of "scene" kids are arrogant pseudo-elitist fucks.

We used to have a great scene (a word that has been ruined by 'scene' kids) around here, we would get a lot of touring bands to come though and play small venues and it was awesome (not like huge bands, but bands that were going somewhere). It didn't really matter if you liked the band or not, you came out and had a good time. Then everyone decided that they could only like certain metalcore or hardcore bands so they'd stop coming to shows that didn't feature bands that sounded just like that. Now we're trying to rebuild everything with a group of kids who are a bunch of elitists when all they know about music is nothing really.

They don't know anything, the don't appreciate anything unless it's part of a trend that's on MySpace. They won't go to shows, they don't understand that's how those bands, even though they are trendy shit, got to where they can have that influence on kids like them. It's frustrating.

Anyway, this has kind of gotten off topic ha.

It's true. My favorite studio album had to be Robbin' The Hood (Is it weird that I though Raleigh Sakers was a likeable old crazy?) but their live album, Stand By Your Van, has to be my favorite of all of 'em. Makes me bummed that I never got to see them live.

My biggest Sublime nerdery consisted of buying the "Secondhand Smoke" limited edition, that came with the exclusive t-shirt... which immediately disappeared out of my dryer one time while I was doing laundry in college. I think I got to wear it all of two times.
