Been hunting for some killer progressive/trance tunes lately to spin on the turntables, here's a few of the tracks I've grabbed:

One day I will finally have the courage to record myself and post up a mix here.

Brand new port-royal record entitled Dying in Time is set to be released 10.05.09, however it has leaked if you know where to get it. I am super, super glad I pre-ordered my copy; this sounds monumentally fabulous. Really, do yourselves a favor and listen to it. Lots of shoegaze-esque elements to boot.
Listen to more previews and order it at this link (http://www.n5md.com/discography.php?catno=169).

Spend $20 more than that and buy yourself a pair of HD280s (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280-Pro-Professional/dp/B000065BPB). Believe me, they are so worth it.

I shit through headphones so often I've given up on "good" and go for cheap and listenable. I just bought two pairs of these (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mdr-Ed12Lp-Budstyle-Headphones-Silver/dp/B0015AM38Q) but I hate that I'm buying disposable headphones. They're alright, nothing special. What pisses me off is that every fucking company seems to think Longer Cord = Better. Fucking tangled mess.

Appreciate the advice, Shadowstorm and Civil. I go through headphones pretty heavy too Civil, but I'm a whore for quality headphones. It's hard to listen to shitty headphones when you got a good pair. I'll likely buy what Shadowrunner is suggestion, but also buy some decent backup headphones too.
If it's one thing I must have, it's music.
Oh, and I'm currently listening to Wade Bowen's "Who I Am" song. Couldn't find a decent vid of it, but it's on his myspace page. I doubt anyone is interested though, haha.

Yeah, I'd recommend CX300-B (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-CX300-B-Earbuds-Black/dp/B000E6G9RI/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_c), which is made by the same company (Sennheiser) that makes the HD280s (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280-Pro-Professional/dp/B000065BPB/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1252170212&sr=8-1). Ouch. Hope it goes well for you, man. I can only imagine that that's going to be one hell of a last show. As for me, Have Heart is one of many bands you recommended to me (via PM), and I've been listening to everything they've put out nearly non-stop. I'm trying everything in my power to make it to their show on the 12th. None of my friends listen to hardcore, but fuck it, if they can't go, I'll go alone. I'm not missing this.
Armed With a Mind is definitely one of the best songs I've heard. The Things We Carry and Songs to Scream at the Sun are definitely two of the best hardcore records I've heard, right up there with Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come, Defeater's Travels and the like.
At least we're getting another album (http://changetherecord.net/2009/08/01/interview-have-heart/) before they break up later on this year.

A friend of mine just turned me on to Protest the Hero. Just an amazing metal band. I was instantly hooked.
I downloaded the new Otep last night and about died from joygasm. It is so goddamn good.
I, yet agian, fumbled through more goddamn Christian metal groups masquerading as real metal music. "Hey, this song is awesome! Crunchy beats, awesome base and a great singer...wait...did he just say 'Jesus'...was that 'he' capitalized...aw goddamn it". Christian "metal" should really not parade itself as metal and should have a warning sticker: "CAUTION: JEEBUS MUSIC CONTAINED HEREIN". Seriously, it is really annoying that I have to Google every new metal band I find, and comb through a dozen websites to find out if they are preaching at me.
At the very least, iTunes (and other places) should separate Christian "metal" with the other Christian music for those of us who don't want Jesus with our music. I clicked "Heavy Metal" and then new albums on iTunes last night. Over half the goddamn search return was Christian metal. :(

If the music is good (and you enjoyed it), and you don't know that the band is Christian the first couple listens through... why does it matter?
Does finding out that a great band is Christian *really* bug you that much? I'm an atheist myself, and I find that pretty mindboggling.

It does, actually. It's not so much the fact that they are Christian but the fact that most of them are very subtle about it. As if they know you won't listen if they tell you outright what they are.
I'm an atheist as well but I, well, I have my own issue with organized religion. Growing up a preacher's kid wasn't exactly a great time. lol
I'm sure it comes across as petty and it probably is. Just one of my pet peeves, I suppose. :D

Coming from a music business standpoint, I can tell you that most of the time that's done because of a record label push. Radio stations (save for ones with Christian programming) won't play a song on-air if it's blatantly Christian in tone... and Christian radio stations, despite all the Christians out there, don't do so hot in the ratings. It's all about exposure.
I mean, bands like Creed, POD, and most recently Flyleaf have proven that if you're light enough with it, you can achieve mainstream success as a Christian act.
I don't think it's a case of the artists trying to "fool" anyone, or trying to spread an agenda... it's just a workaround many Christian artists use to sell albums. "Hiding it under a bushel" to make some cash, so to speak. Hahaha.

Got this album awhile ago but never spent any/much time with it. Lately, I've been listening to it nonstop, just like I did with their first album, Eater of Birds. This album absolutely kicks ass. Also been spending a lot of time with the new Wolves in the Throne Room, also badass.

The Black Dahlia Murder - I Will Return / Deflorate
RS4o37I5dMk
I Will Return
When death so swiftly has coveted
The client from this plane
A journey forged in ice has just begun
A crystal line entombment preservation now awaits
Proceedings executed hastely deceased to be encased
Encapsulated ensured the precious cargo safe
A pending resurrection rebirth
In the distant future when advancements shall allow
A being to be made again anew
The brain to be implanted
Fused within a growth of cells
This vessel but a vehicle
To traverse this mortal realm
Pressurized sealed in ward off the mounting days
Retain revived rebirthed beyond the grave
Jealousy some say it sickening
They merely can't afford this highest form of luxury
To live again
To carry on the will elite
To live again
Advancing through the centuries
Until the sky is black and the sun it never shows
Til the whipping winds of nuclear winter cruelly blow
The gift of immortality has been bestowed
I will return, I will return
Cryonics! Reanimate this life
Remake the fleshy juggernaut
In which the mind will ride
Cryonics! A wisdom is preserved
Frozen forever evolutionary curve
O a renaissance of mad technology
Segregate the wise eliminate the weak
O painstaking process onward we weed
Reproduce the strong eliminate
Heresy some say its blasphemy
Assuring I'll be in hell when god is through with me
To live again to forge yourself anew
To live again to face the godless truth
Foolery some say it'll never be
Fear will condemn such radical ideology
To live again to stand above your brood
To live again the phoenix raised unbruised

And more than that, the Modern Skirts discog. They're a fun little indiepop/straight-up-pop-rock act with a penchant for abrupt key changes, and musical pop culture references -- the guitar solo in one song is actually a song from the first Willy Wonka movie.

AWESOME.
Listening to that made me want to add detective-style narration to every action I made, and I was typing a paper.
"I stared at the mouse as it lay there, mocking me. It knew that sooner or later, I would come crawling back. I always did. It's goons, monitor and keyboard, were waiting in the shadows, clenching lead pipes that had my name all over them. I knew it would be trouble, but that's just how things go in this mixed-up world we live in."
Also, everything is in grainy black and white and I felt like I needed a trenchcoat. :D

How do you feel about this record? I'm not sure if you've always been an ETID fan or anything, but I really feel that when this record is not doing the ETID thing it is fantastic, but the Gutter Phenomenon/Big Dirty riffing and singing parts are starting to stale up a bit.
I think it's fucking fantastic. Keith Buckley's lyrics are fucking awesome, as always. I'm headed up to see them play the Masquerade in ATL on the 29th. Can't wait.

Just found out Thrice has a new one out and... definitely the best album they've put out in years. I was a big fan of their older stuff, but I liked the potential Vheissu showed.
The Alchemy Index EPs? Honestly, I found them a little tedious on the whole, for me.
But this new album, Beggars? Holy shit. They've stripped the production to the bone, moving from heavily polished studio records to one that sounds like it could've been recorded in a couple of takes live. The overall sound is far more aggressive than their past few albums, but without reverting back to their punk-metal roots.
It's been a while since a new album caught me this off-guard, in a good way. The closing title track, Beggars, may be the highlight of the entire thing for me. Serious flirtation with an R&B groove capped off with nearly two minutes of sonic wall-of-noise assault. Awesome.

That's awesome. I'm glad you know that's the way it is. It's hard to gauge some people over the internet. I was just reminded of my ex-girlfriends dad talking about how 'crazy' the Green Day concert was, you wouldn't believe it, there were people crowd surfing.
Every Time I Die is the only band I grew up with that I never got to see in a small venue. I saw them once on a huge stage but it was like 8 feet in the air and security up the ass. It was fun to see them, but it wasn't very intimate.
I love hardcore.

I used to spend whole shows surfing the crowds, then again, I weighed about 130 so people always caught me. I imagine they'd spread like the Red Sea if I jumped out over them now.
The best was getting kicked out of Tripping Daisy because I was able to reach the rafters at one club by standing on the crowd- I grabbed up there and started swinging like a monkey. Oh to be a beanpole again...

Curse Your Branches (2009) by David Bazan
This album was definitely worth the wait. When I saw David in 2006, he had just released his first solo EP and was working on a full-length that was supposed to be done the next spring. Two and a half years after I expected it, the album has finally come out (via Barsuk Records) and I got my hands on it.
Immediately I knew this album was something special. The record deals with the themes of alcoholism and loss of faith, both topics that I particularly relate to. Already this is without a doubt my favorite thing that Bazan has done in the 12 years he's been recording. Additionally, it's becoming one of my favorite albums of all time.
I know I've tried to promote this guy many, many times in more than one music thread over the years, but I seriously urge everybody to at least check him out and listen to a song or two. Or buy him album, whatever, it's your call.

Ack. I just listened to Del The Funky Homosapien's new album. You can listen to it here (http://delthefunkyhomosapien.bandcamp.com/), but it's not a good listen. Del sounds fine, but the beats....are honestly some of the worst I have ever heard.
So right now I'm listening to some MF Doom to help me forget.

Really dig the retro sound of the Noisettes, and Maxwell does a really good job with a modern funk/soul vibe. Rodrigo y Gabriela's playing makes me think they have more than 10 fingers.

I've been a fan of theirs for years. A lot of their fans think they have to prove something by hating them now that they're on a major label. Fuck that. New Wave is one of the best albums they've ever put out.
Last time I saw them live was actually quite by accident. Alkaline Trio was playing Atlanta, but I was going to skip it because I'd already seen Alk3 live about 4 times at that point. Then I found out some old friends I hadn't seen in about a year were going to be there, but the show was sold out.
Managed to snag some same day tickets at around 7:00am day of the show. I drive up only knowing that Alkaline Trio was going to be there. Was running a bit late, but got to the venue. Made it 2 steps in the door, heard Against Me! playing and couldn't fucking believe it. Went into a full sprint to the floor ending up right in the middle of the pit. Was an unbelievable surprise and made the trip completely worth it.

That sounds like an awesome experience! I'll have to check out more of their stuff, I've only heard songs off of New Wave. As for hating bands who sign to major labels, I say this is complete bullshit. I hate bands who suck, period. I'm not going to get upset just because they signed a contract.
I do wish that I'd seen them in a smaller venue, though. Not that they were bad, but it was a very short set, located in a hockey arena where I was seated on the 2nd floor, so I don't think I was getting the full Against Me! experience. Apparently they're going on a Canadian tour early next year so I'll have to keep an eye open.

...As The Eternal Cowboy is probably the album most like New Wave in their back catalog. Reinventing the Axl Rose (their debut) is amazing, but it's a pretty different sound. Kind of an odd mesh of folk and punk rock. I dig it a lot but it's not everybody's cup of tea. Searching for a Former Clarity has a few really, really good songs, but the album as a whole is weak.
And some bands do let being on a major change them. Against Me haven't changed drastically, and where they have changed, it's been for the better.

They're definitely a band better suited to smaller venues. They have an energy live that I've only seen a few other bands pull off.
