We're back on our normal schedule as this week we get to play Chair Entertainment's "Shadow Complex" for the Xbox Live Arcade. A great take on the "metroidvania" games, this one would be better off with a take on Super Metroid's opener: "The Last Liberal is in Captivity. The Nation is at peace". Political arguments aside, for a game that doesn't present a great amount of story to the player, a solid experience, live leaderboards, and a fantastic return to gameplay of old really drove this game home for the crew. We tangent (as always) on the Metroid of old, the changes good and bad, and debate whether or not the hand-holding experience the "metroidvania" games give us these days make the game too easy. So, join us - as we play through our first Xbox Live Arcade game and come out feeling refreshed with our experience.

Aren't you a bit late discussing Shadow Complex? Does your podcast discuss the novel Empire the game is based on? I'm reading it right now.

We touch on the subject briefly. We also tend to do older games primarily due to the heavy spoiler content of our shows.

Just as a heads-up for the future - we try not to do games for a good while after release, because we're just a big spoiler, like violent said.

On your other topic - I've read Empire, but it's a common misconception that the game is based on the book, it's quite the contrary. The book is based on the game - Chair Entertainment licensed the idea to Orson Scott Card to write a story in that universe.

I will say this - don't bother with Hidden Empire (Empire's sequel), it's not nearly as good and reads like something from an extremely biased news channel.

Interesting information. I think I just got what's based on what mixed up in my mind at one point. I appreciate the tip about Hidden Empire, but given that I watch Fox News all day long, I might actually like it. :D

Oh and that's good to know about your time delay due to spoilers. I'm new to your podcast. New as in, I have yet to listen to it. ;)
