Question of the Week - It's San Diego Comic Con time, the biggest event on the genre calendar, and they apparently also do comics. This week's questions are simple:
A) What announcements/reveals to you expect to hear at the show
and
B) What were your favorite announcements from the show.
I'm going to try and do a recap thread after each day of the show, so things should be nicely organized.

Kurt Busiek's Astro City getting the feature film treatment, with Busiek getting first crack at penning the screenplay (http://www.deadline.com/2010/07/working-title-plants-flag-in-kurt-busieks-graphic-novel-astro-city/).
While I'm thrilled for Busiek, I'm not too sure how Astro City would work as a movie. I think it could make a really good TV series, but the book itself is - more often than not - pretty methodical. There aren't a ton of big actions sequences to hang a film on.

I doubt it'll be a good TV show either. Astro City is the superhero universe filled with Captain Ersatz'. They come from Buseik's brilliant mind, but I doubt they translate well to the screen. At best, an Astro City movie would end up like the Hellboy movies. But we an always hope!

The Hellboy movies at least had Hellboy as the lead. Who would be the lead in an Astro City movie? The Samaritan? Steeljack? The doorman who witnesses it all?

It could be a meta-fictional ride through the life of a self-aware Superhero who is searching for the Creator, Kurt Buseik. In the end, he finds Buseik, except its not Kurt, its...Grant Morrison.
Here's you Astro City movie!
I am expecting my check any day now! :D

WooHoo! John Layman's Chew has been optioned for TV (http://www.deadline.com/2010/07/circle-of-confusion-stephen-hopkins-to-develop-tv-series-based-on-comic-chew/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter). No network yet, only a production company, Circle of Confusion, so don't get too excited.
But I already know who should play Tony Chu: Ken Leung, who played Miles on Lost.

ASM made even less sense then usual this week, and Brightest Day is starting to annoy. Thank fuck for Prince of Power.

Savok, could you hook a brutha up with that panel from Prince of Power? The "Goddess of Love"? I need it to be my forum icon

Oh, and WBIE is developing a "hardcore violent (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2010/07/sdcc-10-wb-developing-hardcore-violent-suicide-squad-video-game/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter)" Suicide Squad game. They didn't say which studio was working on it, but I pray it's awesome.

I can bring you many panels (http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/2152242.html?#cutid1)
Bonus (http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/2152819.html?#cutid1)
And strange choice with Suicide Squad, but hey I'll take what I can get.

By the way, Strange Tales II announcement made me squee. And that Rafael Grampa cover is so pretty.

ON the show floor at the Marvel booth - The Infinity Gauntlet. For reals. No word on what project it's from, but I'm going to wildly speculate that it's from the Thor movie.

Holy christ the backlash against Kevin Smith for Widening Gyre, lighten the fuck up people, it's not canon, it's nowhere near canon, you don't need to scream at the top of your lungs.

It's still a pretty awful story.

Wasn't it supposed to be a 12 issue series?
Savok
07-30-2010, 02:13 PM
It's in two volumes, so yeah there's another 6 down the road.
It's not that awful, it's just a very human (a very damaged one at that) Batman, something so often forgotten by writers in lieu of the Batgod, who is as boring as most people seem to think Superman is for the exact same reason. Yes he's human in a very... Kevin Smith way, but it's still an interesting look at the character, one that isn't in any way canonical I again hasten to add.
The issue itself, well.... he may have given a woman he loves 11 orgasms in a row. Also during a rather infamous scene from Year One, he may have had a bladder spasm due some overloaded pyrotechnics.

OK, so some google fu netted me this:

And no Savok, you lost your right to apologize for this when you started whining about Morrison's Batman and Bendis' Avengers. This is shit, and being canon is irrelevant.

Canon means the pain lingers on. Cry for Justice/Rise of Arsenal are going to be bringing unspeakable horrors for years to come, polluting the entire DCU.
This, will never do anything, it's not important, it's like All-Star Batman but even less so. It touches nothing, you won't be reading Detective one month and find anything referenced and have to relive whatever nightmare you suppressed.
Chris Sims has a pathological hatred of Kevin Smith, always has. Asking for his opinion on Smith is like asking FOX News about Pelosi.

Except be a gigantic piece of shit. And for the last time, Batman: Year One is not canon, but it is the only batman story that matters. And now one of the best parts of it has been ruined by that crazy man-child.
Chris Sims has a pathological hatred of Kevin Smith, always has. Asking for his opinion on Smith is like asking FOX News about Pelosi.
Well I don't know about that, but you don't really need to read the review, the panels are enough. But this is modern PR for you; shoot the messenger, question his credibility, doesn't matter what he says?
So, my question is, has he hired you for PR?:)
Also, don't take his name for more than 3 times in a post, he might appear!
or maybe not, he's stopped those shennanigans since twitter!

No I've read Chris Sims for years, the man loves someone punching a bear as much as I do, it was because of him I read Nextwave, humanity's greatest achievement. He's had a hate-on for Smith at least as long as that too.
And hell I'm not even really defending Smith (he admits to writing the thing high as a kite) so much as questioning the total hysteria that seems to have gripped large parts of the community just for something so easily ignored. It's fan-fiction (which is an insult in itself really), if you're going to rage about that then rage about all the Batman/Robin erotica all over the net too.
Year One is DKR canon, in Miller's mind at least.

Well Kevin Smith likes to run his mouth like a bitch everytime somebody says anything bad about him and unlike Slash writers, he has his own SDCC panel to promote HIMSELF. And that's why people are going crazy over it.
