So, I didn't lump this into the Dead Space Discussion thread because it's a little more focused just on the story and it's going to be laden with spoilers. If it should belong in that thread, then by all means.
I'll put this in spoiler tags for now just to be safe. Okay, regarding the ending of the game...
Is the Red Marker still around? I believe so, seeing as Kendra was loading it into the shuttle when she was, ahem... interrupted by the Hive Mind, and then you eventually take that same shuttle into space. My inference here is that you've got the marker in the shuttle's cargo bay when Nicole says hi, right? Therefore ripe for sequel possibilities.
Red Marker notwithstanding, the original Black Marker it was supposedly reverse-engineered from most likely still exists, so that could be a possible impetus for a sequel as well. It struck me that the Red Marker, being a human artifact, may be imperfect, and may have caused some undesirable results because of that. Or it may be that the imperfections merely made it less potent, and that the Black Marker is even more dangerous.
So that leads me to my final line of discussion... what did the marker actually do? It obviously affected the minds of those around it to make them homicidal/suicidal, thus sowing the seeds for the necromorphs to breed, but what was its actual connection to the Hive Mind? Did it create the Hive Mind, or was the Hive Mind somehow already sleeping inside the planet, and the Marker just woke it up? I'd think the former would be more likely, since that would be a huge coincidence otherwise. (Which I suppose is still possible.)
Anyways, I think they left the story and the ending vague enough that it promotes this kind of discussion. What did you guys take away from it?
