Our friends north of the border have long cast their covetous eyes southward to the awesome Netflix instant streaming we Yanks enjoy. But as of this fall they will have to find some other reason to swoon over America. Because the long national nightmare is over: Netflix instant streaming is coming to Canada in the fall.
The system will work the same way as it does in the states. If you subscribe to Netflix' disc rental service you'll gain access to unlimited instant streams of movies and TV shows in their catalog. It's likely the selection on Netflix.ca (http://www.netflix.ca/) will differ from the US catalog for rights reasons, but the exact differences were not enumerated at this time. At launch the service will only be available in English, but the company plans to add French-language editions soon afterwards. Netflix also calls this the first step in an international expansion of the instant streaming service, so logically it may be in other nations in the near future as well.

Bah! We can't go giving that shit away!
Next thing you know we'll start giving them the secrets about indoor toilets and sex within the same species. Soon Canada will lurch into the 19th Century. Too soon for their brains to grasp!

Well, it never really did make sense that Netflix was only available in 50 of the 51 states!

I wouldn't really call that a site just yet... it'd be nice if they had put up the site with the catalog and plans, and such things, to coincide with the announcement.

Why the hell would you want to start at a TV/Computer when there are so many amazing titties nearby for you to ogle?!

This was a slip up from Sony last week as they showed the boxed images for the PS Move and they showed a Canadian box and it had the Netflix sticker on it. Guess this is just confirmation.

Interesting news, not sure how well it will work with most ISP's bandwith caps though. I get 100gb a month and while I've never gone over I can imagine watching HD movies will eat right through that in no time.

I go over my cap of 60gb by hundreds each month DLing shows that I watch and then delete. Hell, I just re-DLed my steam library of over 200gb.
I've yet, in the three years I've had the service, to hear anything about my bandwidth usage. And I pretty much go over each month.
What will be the deal breaker for me are more of those bullshit copyright deals. While I can go and watch X show on my television when it's on, apparently I cannot stream it because of copyright reasons. Yes, makes perfect sense.

The kicker is that the only thing available in the library to start with will be The Red Green Show and Degrassi.

I use Netflix Steaming all the time. It's great!
I hope our friends in Canada get a good selection/variety of movies. I personally think the selection in the States is great, but of course it could always improve.

FYI - I got an email earlier today that RedBox intends to enter the video streaming marketplace very soon. The interesting news is...
$3.95-a-month plan that would including unlimited video streaming along with four free DVD rentals from Redbox kiosks.

That's retarded. 4 dvd a month?I think it's aimed squarely at folks who want streaming and nothing else, so it's not terrible. I'd bet they also have more expensive plans, too.

Well, I'd be interested to see what they're streaming that's for sure. People curse cable been soon enough, they'll step back and look at $50 streaming bills from multiple services.

Um, considering that a Redbox rental is one dollar per movie, that's like getting streaming for free. I can't believe they'll actually do that. It would be pretty crazy if true.

Rogers in Ontario is draconian on their 60GB cap. $2/GB overage, and we get hit almost every month.

I meant like retarded like good. But I was also wondering though, is it actually $4 a month, or like at a time, or yearly. I don't know.

And it's a $50 max. $30 at Bell... I prefer my $10 :).
But most big ISPs used to be the same as Hawk's description. In the last couple of years they started charging for overage rather than hassling about it or threatening to cut off service. I guess they figured out it doesn't work and resorted to more lucrative measures. Either way, I have unlimited internet so I'm looking forward to it if the selection is good.

I've been using zip.ca for years.Same here. Helped slice my Blu-Ray/DVD purchases down to a pittance of what they were prior to using the service.
That said, I can't stream movies from Zip...

Blech on the amount of content. It'll be tough for them to keep me as a subscriber past the trial.
