View Full Version : Stupid iMacs

I am staring at the 31st...the 31st crashed/failed harddrive in our iMacs at work. 31 of less than 100. Ya ya I know everyone loves them, never has a problem, they are perfect and save humanity...
But...fuck man. This is just stupid. The moment we started getting them I noticed that they all seemed to run freakishly hot, especially along the top surface of the screen, just untouchable hot. Not sure if thats the issue but they just cook their insides and fail.

Anyway...that's it, just bitching. It just sucks, we have lost so much fucking time to these shitty things. This will be my 745th hour of OT directly caused by these motherfuckers.
I just figured that out...ug.

Anyone else out there have any piece of particular hardware where they work that always causes them issues.
EDIT: Darn I probably should have not put fucking in the thread title:(

I love my MBP, but I always thought that the concept of the iMac is just stupid. Way too many pieces to fail to put in just one container.

Ya that's most likely it.
Bad taste in my mouth seriously.

Haha, the HD is dying in my MBP. Keeps making this weird clicking noise. As I understand, its a common problem. I just cringe at the thought of what its gonna cost me to get fixed.

They are really easy to replace, if you feel comfortable taking it apart.

As long as your warranty has ended, there's no reason not to just replace it yourself. You'll be saving hundreds of dollars.

For a stretch, the Dell Inspiron 5150 was our standard laptop. Virtually all of them had to have a motherboard replacement at some point within their three-year warranty period.

More recently, I've found that Dell's AC adapters are just falling apart. The standard 65W and 90W adapters have a design that makes it clear you're meant to coil the power cord around the body of the adapter. Do that for a year or so, and the rubber boot on the DC side of the adapter will completely degrade, cracking and pulling away from the adapter body. Most of the time, this is benign, but I've come across one or two that actually sparked. I'm sure I've sent at least two dozen back for replacements in the last couple of years.

Backup to an external with Time Machine, stat!

As for the iMacs, I imagine any company can get a batch of bad hard disks... sucks that you had so many. I'm not sure if Apple has business support rates to fix all of them for less than what they'd normally charge per machine. Alternatively try to fix it yourself (but a pain in iMacs)

My next machine is going to be a 27" iMac because of the video input mode and upscalers that will put my PS3 on at that ungodly 2560x1440 but I always buy with American Express so that my warranty is doubled by default (no $ on Applecare really needed... I expect failure within 2 years on machines)

iMacs and laptops are basically the same thing, just on different scales.

Cooling either adequately is near impossible given that people also want them to be silent, so it's really only a matter of time before something fails.

~30% would be a fucking colossal pain in the ass to have to deal with though.. I don't envy you having to put in all that extra OT :/

Man, I thought that was only happening to me due to my poor method of storing the AC adapters. Glad to know there is someone else out there ;)

Not really, we stick to Dells for workstations and some laptop (latitudes) and Lenovos for the laptops, alongside a handful of macbook pros, everything runs fairly well. Any breakdowns are what I'd consider an acceptable amount.

If I was a crying man well...I would be bawling. Its fucking horrible. I spend hours a day filling out paperwork and replacing items and tracking down problems. I worry that people will start blaming my team due to the fact that their belief is that a Mac is not a computer, but a small silver box with god inside. Fucking idiots.
