View Full Version : Oh dear, I'm slightly annoyed and going to rant.

So, as some of you may be aware, the new Xbox is out today in the UK.

"Great!" I thought, and on my jaunt home I dropped by my local game to ask what was needed for an exchange. The till girl was nice nad helpful, told me what they needed and informed me they could only accpet trades after 6.30 (it was 5) and I was off home.

I rushed home to transfer all the data (which was a mission) and packed everything up. Rushed back, all in all taking about an hour out of my life.

Got the same till girl and handed her the box, which she went out back to test.

5 minutes later, she came back with the same box. My heart sunk.

"I'm sorry, we can't accept this, as we can't turn it on."

What? Now. I'm not trying to pull a fast one. The thing worked FINE 45 minutes before when I was transferring data. I ask if she tried using the remote to turn it on. Yup. They even took off the faceplate and her manager even tried.

I ask if I can try. No. Now I'm starting to get looks as if I'm trying to pull a fast one, but she assures me I can come back tomorrow but would I like to buy the new one (5 left) in the meantime. Erm, thanks, but I'll pass.

So I'm riddled with worry the whole way back thinking, "Did I break it on the move?" "Has my xbox died at the worst time?!?!" "Can I get it replaced for a broken front button, what will that cost? Is it worth it?!?!?"

I get home, rather pissed off. Plus it in, and tentively touch the front button.

Powers up first time, no problems. Motherfuckers.

Needless to say, I'm pissed.

Do I go back to the same store? What if they can't turn it on then? Do I cause a scene. Since I know goddamn well that the thing works FINE.

What would you do? Go back, try another store? Burn out the store in question in wrathful vengeance?

I'm just annoyed since they're either a) lying or b) too incompetant to press a fucking button correctly. Neither of which gives me much hope. I just can't believe they looked at me like I was the 50th person trying to fob them off with some broken console today.

I hate retailers sometimes.

Sounds like they're not interested in trade ins. Plus since its new there would be no shortage of people willing to buy outright.

I'd go back and ask what the fuck's their problem.

Thing is, it a nationwide chain store, and they're advertising the damn trade ins. It just doesn't make sense.

I ended up doing the only thing I could do from the internet now the stores at shut.

Write a sarcastic complaint email to the company suggesting they send their staff on some form of basic motor functions training.

Walk in with a car battery and an inverter and turn it on right in front of them.

Go back. Tell them it worked. Or go to another store if there's another in the area. But sounds like they didn't have the damn power cable plugged in all the way. Happens to me sometimes when I move my 360. At least the pre-slim ones with the gotta-plug-them-in-real-tight power cables. That or the cable connecting to the brick wasn't plugged in all the way.

Idiots. Take it back, the Slim is great!

Don't write a sarcastic email, but you could complain. Be sincere and explain the situation. You'd be surprised, you might get a response.

wait; take it back - show them it works.... then bring it to another store

It was probably an honest mistake... but it's still a time sink and thus a pain in the ass. I wouldn't get too angry though, I am certain they just screwed something up with the power cord and/or the cord is faulty. The worst part is probably that it's kind of embarassing as they most certainly thought you some sort of neer-do-weller.

By the time you take it back there will probably be no Slims in stock. If that's the case I WOULD write an email to corporate explaining the situation. Gamestop here let me reserve a Slim after they sold out, and it took 2.5 weeks to get mine. It was worth the wait, mostly because I still had another 360 at home so I didn't go without.

If they are out of stock and don't let you reserve one from a future shipment, that's when I'd complain to corporate.

They don't care if you trade it in or not so taking the time to show them it does work then taking it elsewhere just makes you look like a dick and doesn't affect them at all. It's weird that they take it into the back, when I traded in my xbox around here they had a small TV setup on the end of the counter that they hooked it up to. In my case I knew the thing had frozen and red ringed before so i was praying it would last as I was trying to pull a fast one I guess. If there's another store that's not too terribly far away just try going there.

It was most likely an honest mistake. Just go back there and ask them to plug it in again. Don't be snarky, be as pleasant as can be. Especially don't do what Dukefrukem says. The moment you leave they'll all have a really good laugh at your expense, and probably tell all their friends and loved ones who will in turn laugh at the dumb asshole they had to help that day. If you're nice you'll probably get an apology.

Eurgh.

I guess I'll be nice then. It was just annoying that they must have had people try to pull a fast one today and I got lumped in with them. Plus allowing me to go in the back room and try it was a big 'no no' so I'm relying on them to get it to work, and yeah, when plugging something in and pushing a button is beyond their ability....

I know they'll be out of Slims by tomorrow, I just know it. So I'll guess I'll get store credit and wait till more are in.

Of course this is all dependant on them not turning around and saying 'It doesnt work'.

If they do that again I'm going for a serious bodycount ;)

Probably they've got a bad cord, and they've been sitting there smug for days while others like yourself came in and also tried to "scam" them.

Myopia, thy influence abounds.

Go back be nice. People make mistakes and to them, 1+1=2. They sound like they tried a couple things and it didn't work. Hell bring your own cord.
It happens.

A friend worked at a game store (EB I think) a few years back and one week he noticed an awful lot of people were getting turned away on trade ins due to consoles not working. So he checked the plug....yeah, no power to it.

Don't people know that you always lick the ends of the power power supply to make sure its on? It shouldn't hurt that much...right? :)

Wow... I always thought UK folks were so honest and civil, but you got shafted. I've also had some nasty insults thrown at me by UK chaps lately without provocation online. I think they are declining in the same way the US is declining socially.

They had the original box, with all my leads. They had my power cord (though I don't think they used it since it was still in two parts).

I know they were probably doing something stupid, but they wouldn't let me have a try. It's being suggested your dishonest without being able to prove otherwise.

I'm sure I'll be my usual polite self when I go in, and snipe at them on the internet if they annoy me again. Like a true two face coward. :D

Whip them in their fucking cocksuckers with the cord then.
That's what I say:)
See how quickly I drop into rage hahahahaha.

Go to a different store for your own sanity. Even if it's a chain, their sales numbers reflect on the individual stores' manager, so don't give them your sale. Plus, if you go back, you're assuming they won't be stupid twice... why is that a good bet?

Yeah, go to another store, or pretty much insist to be allowed to try it with them watching.

Or, get the trade in credit at their store, and go and buy the 360 at another location lol

Well I went back to the same store this morning.

Two new guys where behing the till and long story short, they managed to get it to work easily. So I now have a shiny new xbox.

After I explained the story to them and they went off to test it, another guy waiting in the queue said "If its the same girl that served me yesterday I'm not surprised, she closed up the shop at ten to seven yesterday" (I was in at 6pm). It sounds like she just didn't want to deal with the hassle so dismissed me the easiest way she could.

Nevermind though, £70 for a new xbox leaves me happy. I put my HDMI cable (came with the elite) in there for fear of being turned away for not having it, and the new one is HDMI free. Lucky I have one lying around.

Sorry to hear your struggles Narradisall, but glad you got it straightened out. My local shop only got 8 Xbox "S"s in (I don't think "slim" is the right word, maybe "slick"?) and only because they were pre-ordered before they got their stock allocation. Nothing available for sale to peeps that didn't pre-order before a certain invisible date. It's pretty shitty. It's not like they couldn't sell 20 consoles, instead they're just turning away custom.

Anyway mine was one of the 8 pre-orders, so it's sitting in my nicely colour-coordinated all-black entertainment bay. It's so quiet !
