Via Gamekyo (http://www.gamekyo.com/newsen29301_devil-survivor-announced-for-the-nintendo-ds.html), Atlus has just posted an ad in Famitsu announcing a new DS game called Devil Survivor. Odds are good that it will be a MegaTen spinoff of some kind, maybe even closely related to Devil Summoner, but we'll have to wait until November 7 to get any real information.

Portable MegaTen? Yes please.
If you want some portable MegaTen, I strongly suggest you look into playing the new fan translation of Persona 2: Innocent Sin (or hell, the domestic Persona 2: Eternal Punishment if you haven't) on your PSP. I've been playing it on my PSP since the patch was released about a week ago, and have been very impressed with how well it's been done. (I've also been struck by how many game assets are duplicated between the two Persona 2's, but I guess that just makes it make sense that they were released as two halves of the same game.)
Also note that there are translations of the Super Nintendo Shin Megami Tensei games floating around, but those games are a fair amount more unforgiving.

There are three new scans (http://www.gamekyo.com/newsen29320_devil-survivor-first-screenshots.html) at Gamekyo, and Atlus is giving a release date of January 15, 2009. The game is reportedly 90% complete.

Looks like a more mature version of the DemiKids games (aka Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children). That would be cool. I could definitely go for some demon negotiation/fusion in a modern Japanese setting on the DS.
1up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171129) has a bit of information about it. It sounds like the plot of many of the older Digital Devil Monogatari games, if I remember right.

The Demikids games are fun, but can feel like a watered-down pokemon game with devils. From the screenshots this game seems like it's aiming for an older demographic, so it might be more in line with other MegaTen games.

Gamekyo now has a gameplay trailer (http://www.gamekyo.com/videoen13625_devil-survivor-short-gameplay-video.html) up.
Hmmm...mission start? It stops before it gets to the battle proper, but there seem to be hints of a vaguely strategy-RPG setup going on. That seems even more evident in some of the screens Evil Avnovice posted above. Could be nice. I've been wishing for a strategy-RPG megaten for ages.

The trick is a lot of Atlus's games are hit or miss. And some that are "hit" for me are still very flawed (like Steambot Chronicles). Make sure you do research before you go drop $60+ on a game that cost $40 new. Or ask me. I've bought most of Atlus's games since the Playstation. I'm missing a few, and some recent ones I own but haven't really had a chance to touch, but it's a place to start.

Yeah, but if you got it used, that means you didn't get the mini harmonica that came with the preorder. The harmonica that fell apart a few months after I got it...yeah...so worth it.

It's a pretty safe thing to do these days. I've hacked about a dozen so far, and the only time I've run into problems was when someone brought out one of the most recent PSP-2000's that have a motherboard that isn't hackable yet. And trying it on his didn't brick it, it's just the hack didn't work.
It's also not too scary because most bricks are unbrickable these days, thanks to Pandora's battery. And if you ever decide you don't like having a hacked PSP, you can always upgrade back to official firmware.
Not that I'm trying to pressure you or anything. But it's pretty unlikely something will go wrong. (Now watch, you'll now go try to hack your PSP, brick it, then blame it on me. That would be just my luck.)

Trust me. I have that unique form of Ludditis that would render whatever gets tried on my PSP to not only brick the PSP, but somehow melt my PC's harddrive down and cause my 360 to red ring. I'm just that kind of guy.
My copy of P4 hasn't shown up yet but it'll probably be in either Thursday or Friday. I want to get it in the house but I don't know when I'll even have a chance to play it. I'm also torn about whether I should try to finish up P3 & The Answer before I dive into P4 or just put that on the back burner and get started on P4.

I did start a long list, then decided to delete it and try hard to give the must haves.
Top priority: anything MegaTen, (though Devil Summoner isn't quite up to par with the others, it's a fun game). There is a GameBoy game (Revelations: The Demon Slayer) and a couple of GBA games (DemiKids: Light and Dark versions) which are okay, but can be had for cheap if you find them.
Next: Etrian Odyssey 1 & 2. Hardcore dungeon crawling at its finest.
Then: Sting RPGs, mainly Riviera and Yggdra Union. They're both different from the usual games, but good if you give them the chance. Baroque and Dokapon Kingdom are also Sting. Baroque takes a bit of work to love, but Dokapon Kingdom is a surprisingly fun multiplayer boardgame RPG. It sounds strange, and it is, but it's lots of fun.
There are many others. But like you said, it's a long list, and I don't want to start going through every Atlus game and giving my take on it. If I even went through every Atlus game I own, which is like half of their total releases, we'd be here all day. So feel free to ask for opinions on anything you're curious about. And know that many Atlus games are quirky, so not everyone will like them, and some of them are really hard to enjoy and you're best off avoiding.

I didn't really care for Baroque. I tried to love it, and I DID love the sheer abstract absurdity of the setting, but I just couldn't get into the game.
frederec, have you tried Eternal Poison? I want to try it because I've heard really good stuff about the setting/story (esp. the first chapter) but I've also heard very blasé things about the actual gameplay. I also don't really like the art style.
I was on the verge of grabbing it but then they hiked the price up by $10. Grrr

I have Eternal Poison, but I haven't played it yet. It's part of my huge stack of games lately that I haven't gotten to yet.
I like the art style too. That's part of the reason I got it early, so I could get the art book. I get the gameplay is okay. If it's better than Stella Deus (which it sounds like it is), I'll be happy. I just need to find the time to play it.

No no... I DON'T like the art style of Eternal Poison. That's one of the reasons I held off on snagging it when it was only $39... now that it's $49 (and I hear that the gameplay is okay at best, tedious at worst), well, I'll wait until I see it either steeply discounted or I'll just have to live without it.
But anything Megaten is alright by me. I still need to snag a copy of Devil Summoner. Then I think I'll have every PS2 Megaten game. Woo!

Again, the problem with many Atlus games. They're good during a drought of games, but when there's real competition, the don't stack up.Quite true. The Megaten series is an exception, but most of their other games are the kinds of things I pick up from February to June when there's nothing else on the market and you can take that risk without feeling like you're dipping into the budget for the snazzy games.
And while I appreciate them localizing a lot of odd Japanese games, it is really starting to feel like they're reaching the bottom of the barrel. Sure, you get the good Megaten games and things like Etrian Odyssey, but the rest just don't do enough for me lately. I have enough 'classic' PS2 JRPGs to work on as it is without playing whatever cast-off PS2 JRPG happens to get ported this week.
I wonder when Atlus will start to make inroads into the current generation of systems... if they do at all. Are there any Atlus 360 or PS3 games? I'm pretty sure Disgaea 3 was published by NIS, right?

There are a few Atlus 360 games. Operation Darkness, Spectral Force 3, and Zoids Assault. If any of them had gotten much praise, I might regret not having a 360. And yeah, Disgaea 3 was Nippon Ichi. They've been handling their own games through their US branch ever since forming it after the success of the first Disgaea.
A while back there were rumors of a Shin Megami Tensei game on the PS3, and I think it will eventually come. I'm still somewhat convinced that they're using things like Persona 4 and Devil Summoner 2 as money makers to get them the funds to develop on the PS3. But for now Atlus seems to be content with squeezing as much life as they can out of the PS2 and handhelds, with the occasional foray into the 360 and the Wii.

Operation Darkness is laughably bad. From all accounts, Spectral Force 3 should have just been a PS2 release instead of essentially being a PS2/Xbox game on a 360 disc. I haven't heard ANYTHING about Zoids Assault.
If you like the concept of Operation Darkness, just go play Valkyria Chronicles. You'll get your alternate WW2 setting with good gameplay/graphics/story instead of the mess that is Operation Darkness.

According to this Amazon.ca listing (http://www.amazon.ca/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=devil+survivor&x=0&y=0), this may be up for localization. It even comes with a date of June 23, 2009. (GoNintendo (http://gonintendo.com/?p=70674))

If all that's true (and the way things have been lately, I don't see why not), Atlus seems to be very busy these days. I'm cool with that, especially if it's a sign they're doing well.
And the sooner the better for more MegaTen games. Devil Summoner in May and Devil Survivor in June? Sounds like a good start to the summer for me. Some of those others sound interesting too.

Oh man. YOu should never, EVER, believe anything you see on Amazon.ca when it comes to games. EVER!
Though they did ship my P4 Social Expansion Pack when it was supposed to come out...
But that was probably because there wasn't an actual GAME inside it...
And that link seems to be non-existant on Amazon.ca now. No mention of Devil Summoner on the site, that I can find.

I know this is the moment you've been waiting for, frederec. (GoNintendo (http://gonintendo.com/?p=71836))
IRVINE, CALIFORNIA — FEBRUARY 6, 2009 — Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today announced that Shin Megami Tensei®: Devil Survivor™ for Nintendo DS™, a new RPG/SRPG hybrid in the award-winning Shin Megami Tensei franchise, is coming to North America this summer. This may be the first Shin Megami Tensei epic to land on Nintendo DS, but no aspect of the experience–story, visuals, music, or gameplay–has been shrunk in the process. In fact, Devil Survivor invigorates the series with an unprecedented RPG/SRPG combat system and more character customization options than ever before, all wrapped within a compelling, branching narrative. For the first time in the series, players can use a new Demon Auction feature to collect and eventually fuse demons as they seek to create the most powerful party.
The government has quarantined Tokyo after a surprise demon invasion. No one within the isolation zone is safe. Can you and your peers turn the demons against themselves before time runs out and all is lost?
Devil Survivor invades retailers on June 23, 2009 with an MSRP of $29.99.
For more information about Devil Survivor, visit the official website:

NOTE: These are unlocalized screens from the Japanese release of the game. As soon as localized screens are made available, PLEASE be prepared to replace these early screens.
About SMT: Devil Survivor
Tokyo is in full lockdown, the government’s swift, coldblooded response to a surprise demon invasion. Trapped within the sprawling metropolis is the city’s helpless populace, forced to turn on each other in order to survive. A mysterious piece of technology, the COMP, falls into the hands of you and your peers. This device allows you to form contracts, forcing demons to serve you in battle against the otherworldly creatures. There are others with COMPs, so-called demon tamers, who seek to use the demons to satisfy their own whims-be they for justice, peace, or power-in the chaos that was once downtown Tokyo.
Where did the demons come from? Why did they appear? Who created the COMPs, and what is their purpose? These questions must soon be answered, for if you fail to solve the mystery, much more is at stake than your own lives.
Key Features
* Shin Megami Tensei goes portable - The absorbing story, addictive demon-fusing, and hardcore RPG battle that define the Shin Megami Tensei experience finally arrive on Nintendo’s popular dual screen handheld. Expressly designed for Nintendo DS, SMT makes a seamless transition with trademark gameplay features built into an intuitive presentation you can take anywhere!
* Collect and fuse demons like never before - Demon collection is updated for a new generation: competitive bidding determines the outcome! Place your winning bid through the easy-to-use menu interface to add new demons to your roster. Then, fuse them together to create new, more powerful creatures to aid you in battle.
* Hybrid SRPG/RPG combat system - A perfect synthesis of strategy and traditional RPG combat, you’ll need more than the usual battle strategy to come out on top. Deployed in teams of 2-3, you must choose the right combination of human and demons for each unit placed on the grid, then prepare to launch into first person turn-based battle in the tradition of the classic RPGs!
* Many possible conclusions - An epic story of mythological proportions lets you decide whether your loyalties lie with the angels, demons, or only yourself. Decisions made throughout the game will affect the course of the story, ultimately ending in a showdown where your choice of alliance will determine the survival of thousands.

Yes. Yes it is. I just got home and caught the email. Seeing all the responses talking about it makes me feel like I'm not on the ball with my Atlus fandom.

This game is a fair amount of fun so far, even if I'm not that crazy about the auction setup (I miss the demon compendium). I'm a bit stuck at this battle where I need to keep a couple of people from dying. Not sure if I need to level up, focus on movement skills (which I tried but didn't seem to do enough), or both.

I'm liking it too. I'm only just starting the first day of the Lockdown, but the early 'tutorial' part of the game was interesting and it's giving me a nice Persona/SMT vibe, so I'm happy. I wish the music was a little better. It's fine, but I guess TWEWY spoiled me on Jpop in my DS RPGs.
Now that I'm on vacation, I fully intend to sink a lot more time into this over the next few days... once the kids pass out, that is.

I'm on day 2, characters are around level 20. Feels like an easy-mode p3/p4 so far. It does feel like a Persona game, while at the same time reminding me of TWEWY, but that is probably because they're both in Tokyo.
I'm hoping the combat gets a bit more complex.

I'm on day 4, and the combat doesn't really change a whole lot. You get more skills and all, and some of the battles are hard because of the objectives, but it doesn't change too much. I'm enjoying it.
