View Full Version : Darth Vader banned from Star Wars cons

From David Prowse' website
(http://www.darthvader-starwars.com/)
Dave is not appearing at Celebration V

It is with regret that I have been informed by my friends at C2 Ventures, Ben and Phillip, that I am not to be invited to C5 this year or any other Lucas Film associated events. After enquiring, the only thing I have been told is that I have "burnt too many bridges between Lucas Film and myself" - no other reason given.

I have also been advised by the promoter of Paris Manga in September that LFL have requested no photo opportunities with the 501 Squadron, even though I am commander in chief of the 501.

Sincere apologies to all my fans who were hoping to meet with me - I s

I smell fatneck.

I've met David Prowse a couple of times.

Lets just say, man can hold a grudge. Take that from me, who holds grudges rather well as I am in awe of how long that guy can hold a grudge for.

Still, he signs things for me and is nice to chat to (if a bit stern), but he really never forgave them for taking away his 'Darth Vader' moment.

Ok, I'm curious as all get out.

Is this because (In essence) Vader was played by three men? Jones as the voice...the old guy who's name I can't remember as the unmasking, and Prowse was under the mask the whole time?

Is it because Prowse wasn't shown a the unmasking? Or what?

BigJonno
07-14-2010, 11:11 AM
I believe that he didn't know that he was going to be voiced over, for a start.

Is this even a sentence?

He likes to make a thing of saying 'David Prowse is Darth Vader'. ;)

Savok

He knew he was going to be redubbed, however at the end of Empire he wasn't given the fateful lines, only Hamill knew so he could react properly. That annoyed Prowse because he would of done the physical acting differently.

He was also told he would get to be Vader unmasked... as we all know that didn't quite happen. Man got dicked out of being one of the all time great movie villains, I'd be bitter too.

Yeah, it seems to be at least a few things. First the voice over (which he may have been aware of), then being kept out of the loop (apparently he didn't even know Vader was Luke's father until he saw the movie), and finally the unmasking.

Of course, I can't say how much blame he shares in any of that, but it's no doubt resulted in some tension on both sides...

Not only that. His original story, as he told it to my father when we were at a film festival was that he did NOT know it was going to be redubbed and sat stunned in the audience listening to someone else.
Now someone here said he did know.... Thats a change of his story then because we actually heard him talking about it.

However, I would hold a grudge as well.

Well, I'm not saying it's the greatest thing ever - I mean, apart from the original trilogy and maybe a couple of the games (I liked Rogue Squadron, for example), I couldn't give two hoots about the franchise - but there are some things you're just required to know. :p

Not really, it just doesn't have any voice masking on it to give it the tinny feeling you'd expect from it. I think his Vader would have been just fine.

Yeah, he shouldn't hold a grudge for being dubbed over. My first reaction on seeing that clip is to laugh at Vader, not be afraid of him. The voice over work James Earl Jones provided is by far superior.

The unmasking I can understand more since it was just a generic white guy.

Yes, they would have. Acting with a mask is very difficult to do, and Weaving has the talent and the training to convey things with his body and position of his head. Vader though...his movements seemed pretty generic. I think you got that one right.

I feel bad about it, but I felt basically the same way when I listened to that clip. The voiceover fits much, much better.

To be fair, there's definitely some postprocessing going on, too. As ridiculous as he may sound looking back, they could have dressed Prowse's voice up in editing and ran with it, and we would never have known what we missed.

Consider the Jonas brother look-alike we got stuck with for young Vader. ;)

Years ago I was told there was bad blood between Lucas and Prowse starting with Empire by a former Star Wars fan. Prowse was alledged to have leaked info to the press during Empire which is why he was not given the final "I am your father" lines. They suspected he had been leaking and they gave him fake revisions which were then leaked. Not sure about the latest soup opera.

Agreed. It always makes me sad that most people only seem to know/recognize Moran from Shaun of the Dead, probably his least comedic role to my knowledge.
This has happened multiple times:

Me: Wanna watch a Dylan Moran standup? He's hilarious.
Them: Who?
Me: Dylan Moran. He was the guy with glasses from Shaun of the Dead.
Them: That guy was a dick, no thanks. He wasn't even funny.
Me: Sigh. Your loss. He's far funnier than you think.

That must be a U.S. thing. I wouldn't say Moran is a celebrity as such in the U.K, but he's certainly much more widely known than that. Mostly for Black Books I'd say.
