View Full Version : Weird stuff you eat.

We all have things we like to eat that are odd for others. Fries dipped in chocolate shakes, potato chips on sandwiches, deep fried twinkies, etc.

Right now one of my faves is taking sandwiches and replacing lettuce with...KIMCHI. So fucking delicious and VERY tasty.

So what are some odd concoctions you CoGers enjoy?

I have nothing like that... although I really enjoy liver and gizzards and not a lot of other people do.

Yesterday's lunch, listed top to bottom:

Bread
nutella
honey
Golden Delicious apple slices (about 3/4ths of a large apple)
Peanut butter
Bread
Nutella
Banana (quartered)
Peanut butter
bread.

In short: Yes.

An extra fun one: I put mashed potatoes and french fries on burgers; I consider the ultimate burger to be:

Top bun
lettuce
french fries // pressed into the mashed potatoes below
mashed potatoes // surrounded by the wall of pickle wedges
pickle wedges
bacon
cheese
patty
bottom bun.

Well, think of all the things that will go into a good stew: Beef, potato, assorted vegetables, spices, bread, and boiling water. A burger with mashed potatoes on it is just a little boiling water shy of a good stew.

Just the egg part not the actual bird. I have my wife prepare it for me so I don't have to see the bird part.

Tastes like a super hard boiled egg on steroids.

How is putting chips on a sandwich weird? Is there really a person out there who didn't at one point put Doritos on their pb&j?

I like to dip my french fries in mayonnaise. Not sure how weird that is though.

Let's see, I also put hot sauce (preferably Cholula (http://www.cholula.com/)) on my pizza and potato chips.

I never did the chips on a sandwich thing until after I stopped eating meat. I need something unhealthy in that veggie sandwich, afterall. Really, I just missed having a... salty taste in it? I don't know if that's a good descriptor, I rarely talk about food in such terms.

...Isn't that cheating though? :p

Oh man, I never thought to put kimchi on sandwiches. I'm buying some kimchee tomorrow.

Yeah, you can thank my son for that. He's not even four and LOVES the stuff. So I was getting myself some and was gonna make him a ham and cheese sandwich. So what does he do?

I want some dad!
"You sure? it's spicy"
Yeah! *eats it* YUM! I want it on my sandwich.
"What, really?"
Yeah. I want ham. And cheese. And Mustard. And That. *Points to the Jar*

...Ok.

So I try it myself after he literally WOLFED it down. Really fucking good. Adds a perfect crispy to the sandwich like fresh lettuce, wasn't as watery as I feared it might be (some kimchi can be) and the flavor was awesome with turkey.

And as for chips...I've never thought of putting them on anything BUT a meat sandwich or a burger :p...so that's why PB&J is weird to me.

I don't think it's that weird, because it's a well known combo, but I love to eat crackers with peanut butter and chocolate chips on them. Just about any kind of cracker, or bread, will do.

I also like taking crackers, especially wheat thins, and putting some easy cheese on each one and sticking a slice of vienna sausage on top, or a bit of potted meat or chicken spread. It's like white trash hors d'oeurves, especially if you use American easy cheese.

Mashed potato doesn't go well in burgers. I just don't think it tastes good with bread, YMMV.

My favourite weird thing is making a toastie with leftover keema rice and bacon. It was one of those random, "hey, let's see what this tastes like" moments and it was delicious.

Pork rind nachos. Yep.
The pork rinds are about 1/2 the fat of chips, are crispier and built like little scoopes. I get the hot spicy kind, shred chicken and sometimes hamburger, onions, green peppers and cheese.

Sounds HORRID.
Yet I have turned every single person who has tried them to the darkside.

Isn't that the same as Marmite? If so, then eating it on crumpets isn't as strange as you think... over in England.

Vegemite's its own little thing, it's effectively black salt. The classic stuff could peel the skin off your gums, they've nerfed it over the past few decades of course.

I noticed tonight the picture of it spread on the jar is waaaaay too much, so if when trying it you've been following what the jar says, you've been doing it wrong. If you can no longer see the toast underneath, you've put too much on, this isn't peanut butter, more is not at all better. Really you want to smear it on.

That's about the upper limit (http://www.2beerguys.com/images/vegemite.jpg), you can see the heat has melted everything nicely too. While this is doing it completely wrong (http://lh3.ggpht.com/_tpq91pcqIw8/SjtH0O3fIVI/AAAAAAAADPw/3oWP9k7GJzc/Vegemite.jpg).

What? It's just going to waste otherwise. Too far?

Isn't that the same as Marmite? If so, then eating it on crumpets isn't as strange as you think... over in England.

Kinda. Just imagine marmite if it was immensely more awesome.

I think, though, that the reason people don't tend to eat it on crumpets, is that it is pretty hard to spread it without getting build up in the holes. And for most, any more than a translucent smear is a ticket to pain-town.

And something that annoys me. Why am I strange for eating Orange Juice and sugar on Pancakes, when the person accusing me likes Lemon Juice and sugar on pancakes? WTF? What's wrong with that??

Nothing. It is delicious. Although I'm quite partial to an orange/lemon juice mix on them.

Livermush is awesome and if you don't know what's in it, (most of the kids who eat it don't) it's often considered better than sausage because its kinda lighter textured or softer and can be eaten in the same ways. And even when you do know what is in it once you've tried it you'll forget.

I've been eating raw ground beef since I was...I'd say 5, perhaps? I've yet to ever contract any kind of food poisoning from it. If you get lean, freshly ground beef from any clean, well stocked grocery store, the chances of you ever getting sick are probably less than any fast food joint you've driven through.

And don't knock it until you try it. It's suprisingly good and the texture's actually kinda pleasing. A little mushy, a little fatty, a little salty. Strange, but yummy.

I see them cook carpacio on Iron Chef all the time, but my mother has ingrained the fear of raw meat too deeply into my psyche to ever try it. That, and when my burgers are too rare, I feel almost ill eating it. Whether that's a fear of the raw meat, or an actual dislike of the flavor/texture, I guess I won't ever know.

My friend Mark likes his steak raw, and would probably eat it completely raw, if most restaurants didn't insist on at least cooking the outside.

One that I grew up with but others think is weird:

Chocolate Gravy. You simply take cocoa, sugar, a little vanilla, and whole milk and heat it on the stove until it thickens. Serve over homemade biscuits. I think it is pretty common, but most of my friends growing up thought it sounded weird, until they spent the night at my house and my mother made it the next morning. From then they would always ask if my Mom would make that chocolate gravy stuff.

Here is another slightly weird combination:

Also, althought not exactly weird, I love wasabi peas.

Kippered Herrings are better IMO. So fucking good.

There's actually a distinction between the two. Jams will usually have bits of the fruit including seeds, and be a much more heavily viscous-like liquid/solid almost (If you really tried, some could even be slowly poured onto the bread). Jelly is more like gelatin, and is completely strained of all fruit bits and seeds.

And knowing is half the battle.

That chocolate gravy actually sounds really fucking good...especially over buttermilk biscuits or icecream...anything desert-ish actually.

For mine, I don't think I regularly eat anything weird, although mexican lasgna has gotten a few "huh?" looks. It is awesome, layers of tortillas with meats, rice, beans, peppers, spices, cheese and topped with sour cream, guacamole, olives and more cheese. Delicious.

Jalapenos are little landmines of spice that seem to find their way into every damn thing I eat. I hate spicy food so much.

Also, I had no idea there was a difference between jelly and jam. I always just assumed it was Americans being American. :)

LMAO. To be honest, we probably were then a Brit probably called us on it and a Yank ended up coming up with those definitions on the spot :p

Another good but weird combo? Chocolate covered potato chips. VERY tasty.

I have my mother's proportions somewhere, but I haven't made it in a while. However, this recipe looks pretty similar to the ratios I recall:

http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1726,148184-229197,00.html

I think around one to two cap fulls of vanilla and a couple of pats of butter and that recipe would come pretty close (though she cooked for a catering business for over twenty years, I don't think my mother never actually measured anything a day in her life).

I finally found something most would consider weird: Mettbrötchen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mett) = minced pork on a bread roll, absolutely delicious! For most of my life I thought this was disgusting until I tried some after having a few drinks too many when I was about 23 years old. The weird part: eating 1 or 2 Mettbröchen for breakfast with a diet Red Bull afterwards, there's just something about the salty minced pork and onions flavor mixed with the atrociously sweet taste of Red Bull.

Yeah, preserves and jam are very easily interchangeable. However, preserves will generally have more 'whole' fruits, and include things like peaches and pears...fruits no easily/more readily made into jams.

Yes, my mother used to can everything when I was kid...why? :p

Jam and jelly are both kinds of preserves. Personally, I'd say conserves are the king of preservers. The main difference between jam and American jelly is that jam is made with fruit and jelly with fruit juice.

If you like it, awesome...but I just can't bring myself to. And I find boiling in plain water is a waste. It saps all the flavor out of it and leaves a bland, flavorless and almost texture-less hunk of meat. Dunno about Tripe though, so I won't presume.

Smoking is far different, as it adds flavor to the meat, and it doesn't ruin the texture or the flavor of the meat itself. If anything it enhances it. Boiling to me just removes a lot. And stew is different too as it's not just things boiling in plain water, but all together and with spices, etc.

I didn't mean to dump on you, honestly. I mean hell, I've eaten some weird shit in my day and loved it. So I'm not one to judge.

OH! There's a place here called White Spot...at my ex's work they have a sort of fast food place in the hospital (it's regularly a sit down place, but I've never seen any) and they make this fucking AMAZING breakfast sandwich.

Fried Egg
Lots of Bacon
Seasoned Hash Brown Patty
Processed Cheese
Special Relish
Mayo.

I've tried it without the cheese and it's not the same. I hate the relish and I don't like mayo...and I swear to god I could eat 5 in a single setting, feel like shit, and do it all again the next day. They're THAT fucking good.

...Yeah I'm a hypocrite. But oh well :p

I never did the chips on a sandwich thing until after I stopped eating meat. I need something unhealthy in that veggie sandwich, afterall. Really, I just missed having a... salty taste in it? I don't know if that's a good descriptor, I rarely talk about food in such terms.

I do that as well to add a bit of crunch and saltiness.

I had never heard of "balut" before this thread. That's absolutely disgusting.

Well like I said it's a delicacy.. Alot of Filipinos don't eat it either. I was grossed out at first but when I tried it I got hooked on it.

You know.. Filipinos.. they always talk about them being homosexual on Family Guy.

Not sure if you know this but a great deal of Filipino men tend to be homosexual.. it's more readily accepted in the Phillippines though they are the butt of many jokes in the media. At least every major motion picture or television series released in the Phillippines has a homosexual character (not always played by homosexuals) it's kind of a standard thing these days.

Back on the topic of food. Look up "Lechon Baboy" Also Known As Roasted Suckling Pig. Every Filipino party has one. It will clog up your arteries bigtime!

Also, althought not exactly weird, I love wasabi peas.

Wasabi peas are wonderful! The co-op near me sells them in bulk. :D

Has anyone else ever had "pepper jelly"? It's exactly like it sounds. It is a jelly with a spicy subtext, probably red pepper. I've never seen it in stores. It's a little old church lady production. I sorta dig it on toast. But it is my only "jelly" exception.

The co-ops around here all sell a jalapeno jam, right next to the "regular" varieties (grape, raspberry, strawberry, boysenberry, apricot, etc.)

As for weird foods I eat, I'm sure many on this site would consider a large portion of my diet to be weird. I eat tofu, falafel, mock duck, seiten, and many other things that are definitely not part of the SAD.
