View Full Version : Goobye thread? What goodbye thread?

The threads were taken off of the front page, but they're still in the Off Topic section. At least, they were yesterday morning...
Not anymore, it looks like Bap's has been moved to subscribers only, fits' is gone completely and the frontpage links to co-optimus, immortal machines, and bapenguin.com are gone completely.
Now off to make this same post on 1-3 other forums, ugh.

Would you expect otherwise? I am assuming Evil just wants to cut all ties and have a clean start.
So the culling begins... Well maybe the site will get some good people on that have high tolerance.

Immortal Machines has been gone off the front page since I requested it back in early August. As soon as the Magic PC thing happened, I asked Bapenguin to remove the site from the list and I also requested to be removed from Moderator status. I am also the first red that left Evil Avatar over the incident as for us PC Gamers is was the last straw in a continued assault against our platform of choice. Essentially, in Feb '08 I decided with a few others that it was best to start a PC Gaming site rather than change anything at Evil Avatar.

Sucks this happened but let's be honest for a minute. I never donated because there was never an accounting of expenses compared to donations. That right there told me my money was better kept in my wallet. I'm sorry this split occurred for everyone that had a lot of time, effort, and money invested. I thank everyone for their dedication to that site while it lasted and I look forward to all this settling down and finding a new permanent home.

So what if I want advice for building an incredible machine involving lots of cogs? Will I have to use the more technical "round, solid, toothed wheel"?

I also was a bit put off from donating after the first or two I did it, when I saw Evil mention, that he wanted donations so he could buy some Buffy the Vampire Slayer dolls or something. Yeah, he could have been kidding, but when he started showing things he'd bought, days after lamenting about the high cost of upkeep, I started rethinking things. I wanted to donate to help out the community, and I hope I did, but I didn't want to donate to help some guy buy stuff. It wasn't just once I was curious where the money was going, because it wasn't just once he made silly comments like that.
Evil also mentioned something today about shilling for other sites, that it won't be tolerated. I'm guessing this is CoG, PiRi or Co-Optimus? Doesn't stop the man from doing his own shilling, but again, it's his blog, so we have no say. Even if we helped keep the site running every couple months he called for donations.

Well...he took his ball and went home. I was hoping he would have learned from the Magic PC incident that he needed to be a little more open and forgiving with the community, but I was deluding myself. The final straw was how he basically erased bap and fits from the record entirely.
I expected more from him, guess that was my mistake.

You know, I wonder if in the end this is more of what Evil wants. Someone had posted a thread at EvAv yesterday with Way Back Machine links. The site used to be a small gaming site where Evil could do whatever he wanted.
Then a community grew, Bap (and Fitty) pretty much took the reigns, and the site changed from a guys gaming blog to a large community. When that happened the site no longer really belonged to Evil but to the people themselves.
At least, that's what we thought. It's still Evil's personal gaming blog where he can do what he wants, it's not about the community. Thus this new site, which was founded on completely different principles than EvAv. While the transition is a bit difficult, I think this is going to work best for all parities involved.
Just my 2c.

What did you hope to gain by this?
Yea. May have been me that pushed it over the edge. Made a bunch of euphemisms to the site via stuff like 'Cogs vs. Locusts', 'Cogswell Cogs', etc. I feel bad about it now as it wasn't my finest hour, but for me, it was basically saying my final farewells and hoping that I get banned so I don't have the chance to visit.

Yeah, you guys can certainly PM the people over there you want to know, but I think the whole pushing Evil about the word bans and all that has about run its course.
We already turned his world upside down opening up this site, why grind it into him anymore? Although I will say you are welcome to air grievances to Evil in PM about why the lot of us left the site to start this up.
Let's just stop publicly berating him. We knew we'd have no real way of connecting with the EA site after doing this, so it is great that you guys feel like PMing your friends about this place over there. We put a lot of hope in that people would follow us through Co-Optimus and the other sites connected to this one.

I understand that everyone has very strong feelings about all this stuff. But why do you insist on pouring salt in an open wound? Making that post makes nothing better, and just continues to escalate the behavior. If you really want this site to mature and grow, petty posts like that don't help. Some of the admins of this site have already publicly asked users here not to provoke things over on EvAv, and they're totally right to ask that.
Of course you are right, and I have absolutely no intention of continuing to kick the horse. But I do happen to feel that he needs to lighten up in a very very major way.
As has been said countless times, he can do whatever he wants on his own site, but to ban such a common set of characters on a forum simply because your pride is bruised is completely asinine. Sticks and stones, you know?
Blocking our "secret decoder ring signals" like that only serves to remind the people trying to communicate with each other over there that there was some sort of supersrsinternetdrama every time they type something as common as "recognize", and have it come up as "re***gnize".
I mean.. really... That's just fucking stupid. And childish. And petty. I paid money to keep that site online, and seeing the owner act that way pisses me off, plain and simple, so I made a thread to call attention to that fact.
That said, I fully appreciate the spirit of this thread, (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=213) and won't be causing any more "drama" over there from now on.

Evil posted a story about Gears of War 2 so he had to uncensor cog.

Actually, I'm going to have to agree with Evil on this one.
What did you hope to gain by this?
I'll actually stop going there now....wasn't going to quit cold turkey but it seems the best thing to do.

Our absence will speak more effectively than getting involved in some kind of guerrilla warfare. Any trouble caused at EvAv reflects poorly on all of us. There is no need for vengeance, no need to "stick it to the man" as his traffic figures will do that well enough by themselves.
I know a lot of people feel personally wronged, but take the high road. You won't change Evil's mind by causing trouble at his site, you'll simply harden his already one-sided opinion into something utterly impenetrable. What's done is done. You're here now. Don't give the other side fuel for supporting their unreasonable stance. Fitbabits and BAPenguin left in a businesslike manner. It demonstrated the finest spirit of good sportsmanship. I think we should strive to follow their example.
That's why we left, right? Because we admired them and respected their philosophy more than Evil's.

I logged back over for the first time since the Magic PC incident, to see how the farewells were going. Apparently at some point in my long absence, what had been a temp month ban has been upgraded to a permanent ban with no reason given.
Awesome. I got permabanned from a website for doing absolutely nothing at all.
And seriously guys? I'm with James on this. Leave the petty trolling for lesser sites like 4chan or Something Awful. We're supposed to be above EvAv's behavior.
If you seriously need to be banned just to resist the temptation to go back to posting there, then you need to reconsider how in the guy's pocket you are. I'd hate to see this site go the same way the Magic PC incident did, with everyone wandering right back with tail between legs inside of a few weeks, and validating his bogus delusions that there's no more going on there than a couple of trolls.
Just remember one simple thing: He fucking hates you. All of you. Everyone of you who pusses out and goes crawling back, everyone of you who goes over there to troll the site over whatever slight, it's all just feeding his ego, and do you really want to give him that satisfaction?
