View Full Version : I have terrible freaking luck with TV sets

February of last year I had a 50" 1080p Sony SXRD that developed a known issue - a yellowing of the screen - and had to get a repair done. It was covered by a warranty extension that was forced on them by a lawsuit, but the warranty extension expired in June of this year.

Fast forward to February of this year and the problem comes back, so I contact them again. This time instead of a repair they offer me a reconciliation instead, a 52" 2009 model for $500.

After thinking about it, I take the offer. The new set arrives and I give the old (slightly) yellowing set to a local pool hall to use until it dies on them.

Fast forward to today and the 52" set won't recognize the HDMI inputs 99% of the time. If I power cycle the set, it sometimes catches it. If I leave it on the 360/PS3 HDMI inputs, it might - after four or five minutes - pop into view.

Called Sony and sat on hold for 20 minutes until the office closed and it kicked me off the line. Going to call back in the morning.

I was thinking of selling the reconciliation set and buying a Samsung instead. I should have gone with that...

Reminds me of the time I called a 24 hour hotline.

"Hello, thank you for calling our 24 hour hotline. Our hours are 9am to 7pm Eastern"

Go with Samsung. Their sets are more reliable IMO but if something does go wrong, be warned that their customer support SUCKS.

So I got through to a person the next day and talked through to them figuring the processor or controller that runs the HDMI ports is dead, dying, or at the very least suicidal. As a replacement, the TV is out of warranty though so getting the two guys to come out will cost about $200 and that's just to verify the problem - not fix it.

So I ordered this (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN55C7000-55-Inch-1080p-Black/dp/B0036WT4JW/) set and will toss the other one to a kid's play center to use.

ha ha.... I think I just pissed a little.

I started reading and got to the "Fast forward to February of this year" and just relived all the shit issues I have had. Very down with sony as of late. I had an issue with my samsung cheapo 17" tv, but their higher end stuff and my 23.5" LED monitor is very nice.

Samsung and Panasonic are the only sets I touch right now and perhaps the immediate future. Poo on them for being so difficult.

I had a friend whose tv crapped out after 6 years, 4 years out of warranty, and the $1500 repair was comped because the issue was from manufacturing. That's quality customer service. I believe it was Toshiba.

Hm...when we got our set taken care of by sony...it was a known issue, and they sent us a brand new 52" set for 250...the 250 was to pay for an extended 3yr warranty. Are you sure your replacement didn't come with one as well?

As a replacement it had a three month conditional warranty.
