View Full Version : Just gotta gripe - background downloads

Dear Sony,

Background downloading means that a file downloads in the background. Playing a DVD should not interrupt it, but it does. Playing a Blu-ray disc should not interrupt it, but it does. I thought that maybe I am retarded and didn't set something correctly, but even your documentation (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/background/background.html) shows me that you have messed this up.

Since your console generates the heat of 1,000 suns, I fear to leave it turned on while I am playing my 360. And I'd like to start a download, watch a movie, and play my demo when the movie is over. But I can't.

So in short, thanks for not correctly/fully implementing a feature that is immensely useful (and that your competitors had since before their product was even a year old). If your console wasn't also a decent Blu-ray player, I would have scrapped it long ago. Please be fearful that the rumors of a Blu-ray add-on for the 360 will come true. I would love to reclaim some space in my entertainment center.

Not Love,

Inspector Fowler

I've never understood why a DVD stops it. A Blu-Ray I can understand, some check for online updates, but a DVD?

I don't see why the latter would matter either.

Semi-related. It annoys me that Fable 2 stops background downloads on the 360. Not sure if turning off the Orbs altogether fixes that or not, however.

I stream most of my video so the problem hasn't quite exposed itself yet but I imagine it sucks.

Blu-Ray playback is pretty processor intensive, no? I can see why they pause it though, because they would hate to have your video hitch on you and then you would blame the PS3, etc..

The auto shutoff after downloads is enough to make me happy.

Well, Sony clearly isn't an operating system company. It clearly shows as MS has the far superior OS. The PS3's OS is pretty shit in comparison, frankly. Even though they have most of the same functions now, it is clunky as hell and not user friendly.

However, I have a solution for you: Play Little Big Planet. It is full of happiness and sunshine and will make you forget about everything bad that is the PS3 OS.

MS does the OS, Sony does the hardware, everyone is happy. Unified platform. :)

Nintendo can do whatever the hell it wants! ;)

I think you just described the seventh level of Hell, with the controller designed by Nintendo.

Can Google or the Linux group design the OS please? My vision of the revolution involves open source.
