Mwhahahahaha. Once again the nefarious evil sidekick of Purple Santa has seen her way into his precious thread. Feel my wrath! Ok, maybe not so much wrath as a favor to a zombified Santa who at 1am croaks out "can you do a weekend thread for me"? Um, yeah sure. So the silent ghost writer part of the weekend writing team is back in action. Santa will be back by Monday so you can jeer him then. Or whenever he pops his head in here. And speaking of Santa...
thump... thump...
Ignore that thumping, its just Santa tied up and in the closet awaiting being put in the trunk for a weekend with his parents. It seems unlikely that any gaming will be happening for Santa this weekend as he is forced to listen to the crazy ramblings of his mother. I won't be gaming this weekend either except for the possibility of we rule and words with friends on the itouch.
What will YOU play?

I'm playing:
Red Dead Redemption: Completed the Landon Ricketts missions, at least what's available so far, and now I'm off to the other guy in Mexico. I don't think the missions in RDR really excite me much, as they all feel similar. And they aren't challenging enough either.
I doubt I'll finish RDR this weekend but I aim to focus on the story missions and challenges. Killed a cougar last night with my knife! I really need to start doing a push for completing the game because if not I'll suffer from Oblivion-syndrome and get lost in the sandbox. I'm going to start ignoring most of the random missions that pop up from time to time unless they are true Stranger missions.
When I'm not playing that, I'll be dabbling with Blur. It's a pretty fun game, though I wish it were it played a bit more arcade-like.

360:
Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper - completed. 1k.
Dead to Rights Redemption - just started. killled a bunch of guys as the dog and got "Scrotality" achievement, classy. seems like an okay game despite the reviews.
Transformers WFC - going to start it tonight.

For the first time in a couple of months I'm finally starting to feel normal again, and that means I can game. :)
inFAMOUS I absolutely love this game. I'm almost done with the first island, though I still don't have that damn gliding ability. I was hoping that the substation I did this morning would give it to me, but that gave me a sniping ability. Still, everything about this game is just so damn well done. And I judged Zeke too early, he's a selfish bastard, but he's not that bad. I really want to see where the story goes, what little I've seen so far is pretty damn interesting.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker I'm picking it up tonight and I'll be getting my new PSP tomorrow, I can't freakin' wait. I'm going to be having a love affair with that thing this summer, I still need to grab Hexyz Force, maybe ModNation Racers, and Lunar. But getting a new MGS is like xmas morning for me, I'll be engrossed.
3D Dot Game Heroes I bought this just at the beginning of the slump I'm just getting out of, so I'm only on the 3rd dungeon, I really need to get back to it. It's such a charming, nostalgic little game, it's great.

I'm really glad you're liking Infamous so much.
I have a little dilemma. Goozex will be sending me Split/Second shortly, though I'm not sure I want another racing game just yet. I have Blur currently, and though I wanted Split/Second much more I don't know if it's worth the full 1000pts. I could always put it on hold and grab a couple other games like A Crack in Time, but I don't know. Racing games always seem to drop in price really fast. Can anyone recommend Split/Second wholeheartedly?

I really didn't care for the Split/Second demo, but maybe that's just me. The racing felt incredibly dumb to me, for lack of a better way of putting it. All style, no substance. Blur looked like a lot more fun.
I got nothing!
Gamefly shipped out Mass Effect 2 yesterday but I don't think it shipped from Austin so that means I will not get it this weekend. Usually, if my queue sits empty for a day with one of my titles listed as high it gets shipped from a different warehouse than Austin the next day. That means a longer shipping time.
I will probably dabble a bit here and there hoping to find something that sticks. I've been doing that all week and so far I haven't found a woman game that is going to hold my attention. I might just pack a few things and head to Hot Springs for the weekend. I need to go visit some family anyway.
Thanks for stepping in for the exhausted Santa ADD. He is not as young as he used to be and needs the help now and then. :p

I've been enjoying Patapon 2 a lot lately. My PSP has been alternating between that and Hexyz Force.
On the console front, I still want to finish Yakuza, but I seem to keep getting distracted from it.

Transformers:WFC- Fun 3rd person shooter. Gonna have to try multiplayer this weekend. And it's Transformers.
If I play anything else it'll be one of the Sonic games I downloaded yesterday, Bayonetta, Wipeout HD, or Alpha Protocol. This has been a really good year for games so far.

You say that like it's a bad thing!
I've quite liked Split/Second and it's a great time waster when I want something that makes my eyes bleed and won't take up a lot of time. I do understand the complaints about the rubberband AI but it's more than made up for by the awesome explosions and insane crashes, at least in my book.
But I'm mostly playing it single-player. I hear that Blur is a much better MP experience.
I'm working this weekend but I'm hoping that I can get a good amount of gaming done. Here's what's on the docket for the next few days:
Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - I've finished up the majority of the Seth & Irish missions now and have a date with the Marshall down near Fort Mercer. I have a sneaky suspicion that I'll be making my way to Mexico before the weekend is over.
Dragon Quest V (DS) - I've owned this game for over a year now and have finally managed to fire it up. I'm only about 10 minutes into the game but for a game that is ostensibly 18 years old, it feels remarkably fresh and engaging. I'm not sure if that's high praise for the game or damning evidence of just how stagnated the JRPG genre has become. There's something about that fanfare that just stirs the blood though...
Alan Wake (360) - I might fire this up over the weekend. I definately do want to work on it some more but every time I think about playing it, I get the urge to wander around New Austin instead :)
Bioshock 2 (PC) - Grabbed this on the Steam sale that is going on and while I have the PS3 version, I think I might trade it in and get to work on the PC version instead.
Try Not To Spend My Entire Life's Savings (Steam) - The Steam sale that is going on is going to be a huge test of my willpower for the next week or so. I already dropped $40 yesterday on 4 games. I can't complain too loudly about that. I need to stick to just grabbing daily deals from now on and then I'll go nuts on the 4th...
Yesterday was my son's 6th birthday and he got the presents from us and his sister. We got him a little Discovery Channel handheld camcorder/digital camera and a Star Wars Force Trainer (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geek-kids/7-13-years/bf1b/). We're going to fire up the Force Trainer this afternoon and see how/if it works. Note to parents: scour the post-Christmas sales for future birthday presents. We got both items for a fraction of their normal retail price back in late December/early January and it was great not having to run out to buy more presents in the summer :)

Glad you're loving it, Gorvi. Between inFamous and Batman, last year was a great year for PS3 superhero games!
Red Dead Redemption - Still enjoying this game's multiplayer. Co-op missions are a blast and a great way to get big XP now that doing hideouts over and over isn't as valuable. 'Ammunition' (the one at Tesoro Azul) is still elusive as no group of three guys I've joined has been able to complete it. A lot of players not using headsets, which frustrates me to no end when trying co-op missions. But I'm having fun with it and I have plenty of challenges left to accomplish.
Gears of War 2 - my brother might be joining me for some co-op this Saturday night if he can get a break from his two-year old son.
Castle Crashers - I found a glimmer of hope in the potential to finally play some CC online with aVaKuS, if we can get our schedules and moods in line.
Santa, at some point this weekend you and I are going to play some RDR co-op. No excuses! ;)

I'm going to probably plant a few plants that I've been extremely lazy about and just have in pots on the front steps. Two rhododendrens and a hosta. We had this tiny starter kit for sunflowers that we bought for $1 and they grew really fast so I had to transplant them this past week. I hope they grow tall.
I will also tackle my book shelves. I have too many books crammed into two cases and it's a clusterf*ck. So tomorrow morning when I'm up with the boy I think I'm going into the spare room and start going through them again. I did once before the move but I need to weed about 75% out I think. We'll see how that goes.
Basically I want to do this so I can start going digital. Getting over holding a nice paperback in my hands will be hard, as it's one of my favorite things to do. But if I really like the Nook when I check it out at Barnes and Noble or Best Buy it will be hard to walk away without getting one. And I won't have to worry about babying my books anymore, which I'm terribly OCD about, at least if I buy them brand new. Currently my son is getting into the books and tearing them off the shelf. He ripped up a copy of Kafka's Metamorphosis recently, though I'm not too concerned as it is just a cheap copy I had in college. However, I saw that he had found my old single-copy (not split into two books like it is now) hardcover of Magician that I had found on a lawn sale for $25 years ago and I had to put that up higher on the shelf.
I'll put the must-keep books in plastic bins and probably donate the rest to Goodwill or my hometown's local fireman auction in August. Or bring a bunch to work and leave them in the breakroom for people to take. I like spreading the wealth.
Since books aren't a potential resale item for me (unlike games) I don't mind have a digital version. At least that's how I feel now, we'll see if I go through pulp withdrawal. I don't have the cash right now for a Nook, so I'll have to look around at things I can get rid of to help subsidize that purchase if I decide on one. In the meantime I'll just go through the shelves to make room back there, as my son is starting to use it more as a play room than anything else. I doubt there's another Kelegacy firesale coming up as I just gave 18 games to Gamestop for my 360 slim. :)

So. I got Singularity, which is surprisingly fun. It rips off practically every game in the shooterbook. From Half Life 2 to Bioshock, but it's polished and fun enough to get by with some awesome ideas of it's own. It can be a bit dated (heatlhpacks, savepoints) but generally it's way better than expected.
So that, Modnation and God of War 2 I guess.

I feel so behind in the gaming arena! I just got Red Dead and Transformers (wedding gifts - I love my friends!) but I have to work this weekend making a game... I have been working so much that I still haven't even opened ME2 yet (it glares at me daily).
I am on the fence about Split/Second too. I love the Burnout franchise and I love Forza but this doesn't seem to fit into either genre of racing games. The demo didn't grab me but I haven't heard a whole lot from my friends and co-workers on this title... help?

I got that one just a few days ago. She wanted me to not be on my computer and just sit on the couch (where I already was) and watch tv with her. It doesn't sound too bad, but she was going to watch about 5 hours of Wimbledon and I have no interest in it.
Trying to figure women out is frustrating and fruitless.
Once again, my seemingly peaceful weekend has been ruined. It seems as if we will be going to Ohio to my girlfriend's parents' house to stay the night. Then the next day we are headed off to see her cousin's new baby.
A note for the women (who can't really be here, being the internet and all): All babies look more or less the same. I'm sure you think he is handsome, but most babies look just like that, to most men anyways. I understand fawning over it if it is our baby, but if it isn't, we don't have much of an opinion.
Also, going to see a newborn isn't going to be anything interesting. It's going to lay there, wiggle it's arms and legs a bit, and then smile, most likely caused by a bowel movement. All of that is pending that he isn't asleep the whole time since he was up keeping mommy and daddy awake all night so they are totally unpleasant to be around while junior is off in lala land.
/rant (I'm just bitter about not having the weekend to myself)
On the up side, I convinced her that I needed to bring my laptop since I had to make moves in the CoG Civ4 game, so I may be able to get a bit of that in. If by some sheer luck I am able to game on Sunday, I will be on Assassin's Creed 2. I am about half way through the story and I am loving it. It feels way better than the first one and I am already looking forward to the next one.

You know this thread was started by a girl, right?
Oh, and not all babies are cute. A friend of my wife had a girl, and that poor girl was butt ugly, looking a lot like her father. My wife actually felt more strongly about it than I did. Thankfully, she got cuter as she got older.

Well, I guess I'll add Transformers: War For Cybertron to my playlist for the weekend. I was out at Best Buy looking for an SD card for my son's new video camera and they had Transformers up on the rack for $39.99. I looked around and they didn't have any PS3 copies on that particular rack (though they did have it on the $59.99 rack), but the guy said that it was a two day sale and they forgot to take the price down, so since it still had it listed as $39.99 they had to honour it. Sweet! I've heard enough praise for the game and very little detraction so there ya have it.
Thankfully there's nothing on the Steam sale for today to really rev my engines. I've got a line on a 360 Slim for $299 with no taxes if I buy it this weekend, but even if I traded in my old 360 (I'd get $75 towards the new one), I can't justify it. I could feel the glare of my wife when I jokingly suggested it to her this afternoon...
Sigh.

I don't really like that either. The weird thing is that Megatron also has limited ammo in tank form while jets have unlimited ammo in jet form. I guess maybe there were more things to shoot in that level or it's harder to get ammo since you can fly around. So I spent a lot of time just hovering in a hallway as a jet so I could fire as much as I wanted. :p

They even have the transforming noise!:DI wouldn't mind if a) the cannon was stronger or b) the cannon had a hell of a lot more than 15 shots. Some of the other weapons are fine but unless/until I figure out how to do melee attacks, if you run out of bullets, you're screwed.
I also wish they had Frank Welker doing Megatron's voice. Sure, Peter Cullen is great and all, but to get someone else doing Megatron and Starscream just doesn't sit right!
But those are just nits I need to pick. What I've played is quite solid and a vast improvement over the movie tie-ins. I still think I like Armada more, but I'll wait until I've played some of the multiplayer modes and seen some of the big bosses first.

This is why I have the perfect mate. We BOTH use our laptops when we watch tv. I often will play a game handheld or console w/headphones and monitor. She feels as long as i'm next to her and she can talk to me she doesn't care. Besides, she surfs to more sites than I can ever imagine. If you see the xbox on during the day during the week that's ADD watching Netflix. That's her current obsession.

The worst storm I've seen in years is going on right now!
About an hour ago it got really dark outside, and then a torrential downpour started. It was raining so hard that I couldn't see across the street, and I had to close the windows because the rain was blowing right in to my apartment. Then it started hailing. The hail was hitting my windows so hard I thought there were going to break. The sound was deafening.
It let up a bit, and I thought it was all over. Two guys jogged by outside shirtless, which was funny. Then suddenly the rain picked up again and for the last 30 minutes there has been a lot of thunder and lightning. The thunder is hitting literally even 10 seconds, and it's so loud that it's shaking the whole building. I've screamed and jumped at least four times now. It's so loud it's hurting my ears! I can't even hear the TV show I'm watching, and my windows are all closed!
Storms usually don't scare me, but this one is insane.

I dunno what I'll do this weekend. I'm hanging out with my dad tomorrow, so that'll be alright. I'll probably be reading on my nook and playing Red Dead.
Just like during the weekdays. Being a teacher rules.
I'm seriously thinking I need to be a teacher too. I was always asked that when I told people I was an English major. "Oh, you're going to teach?" No. Basically I studied something I enjoyed and now look at me. I give handjobs to people on Spooge.com for gift cards to Applebees. And the last one I got was expired!
Having the summers off would pretty much be awesome. That's the one thing I miss about being a pre-working age student. Summers.
I don't know what I'd have to go back to study, but I have the bachelors in English so I can't imagine it would be a huge work load. Lots of student teaching and probably lots of Prozac. Ugh. I've never even subbed. And what level I'd want to teach...no idea.

I don't know what it is like elsewhere, but I heard nothing but bad things about the education programs in my state. Sounded like a huge pain in the ass. One of my friends even told me that they forced her into electives that she didn't want; they were that picky.

Ugghhh, I hate that game! I just beat it last weekend but it stays with you for days!
You know this thread was started by a girl, right?
Oh, and not all babies are cute. A friend of my wife had a girl, and that poor girl was butt ugly, looking a lot like her father. My wife actually felt more strongly about it than I did. Thankfully, she got cuter as she got older.
SCIENCE!!! knows if you don't have a vested interest in said baby it's just a generic shit factory with a a reed warble designed to make you deal with it once it starts up.
I don't believe in girls on the internet, at least till the bone marrow test comes back. :D That being said...
I feel so behind in the gaming arena! I just got Red Dead and Transformers (wedding gifts - I love my friends!) but I have to work this weekend making a game... I have been working so much that I still haven't even opened ME2 yet (it glares at me daily).

I know it's the hot thing to do now, but I can't see myself going digital when it comes to books anytime soon. I enjoy the feel of the books, the smell, and the fact that I own the damn things - no DRM or anything else getting in my way. There are some great used book stores here that I love going to, and of course the public library. Besides, I know this might be blasphemy here, but it's nice to read without turning on yet another gadget. I'm kind of sick of gadgets.
Thanks! I now have sympathy for all you men... he has no desire to get into the internet stuff and can't understand why I need to be on the computer when I am at home... at least he plays console games and has a sweet ass!
That's all that matters. ;)

I still say there is a great game idea in sacrificing students by the mad math genius professor. It only gets better that everyone on staff seems to fear you. You are such a natural as a lead character in a game :D
Here, I will promise you now: If I ever start designing games, I will definitely make a Lovecraft/Persona/Psycho Math Professor game. But possibly not first. I still want to make the survival horror RPG set in the Louisiana swamps (I was born in New Orleans and grew up in southwest LA).

Let me warn you now: when I was a grad student, I would occasionally read the Chronicle of Higher Education in the lounge at school. An article that really stuck with me was one talking about this lady who cobbled together full-time teaching pay by commuting between three different schools and prepping classes as she drove. She was an English teacher.
In fact, it's generally understood that it's hard to get a university teaching job, and that's as a math professor. There's much more of a glut of people with liberal arts degrees like English. But if you can get it, the pay sucks, but the time off does make it worth it.

English professor is one of the most ruthless positions to get in a university. I became friendly with many English professors and they told me tales of how they made it as English professor. Talk about horror stories.

Singularity is the epitome of a bargain bin game for me. I'm sure the core game is short and with little replayability like most FPSs like Raven's last game Wolfenstein. I'll pick up both eventually as I like FPS, but not $30-60 FPS.

After a recent PC gaming binge, I'm re-introducing myself to my consoles, and you know what that means: the same fucking games I've been playing since January! On the plus side, Prince of Persia is almost done -- I'm on my last set of areas -- and I think 900 is achievable, so long as I make a quick run through of the old areas I did before I had all the plates unlocked. I occasionally find the context-sensitive freerunning controls do asinine things, and the QTE-driven combat is starting to seriously send me around the bend, but fuck it, we're almost there. Meanwhile, Mass Effect 2 is going back in tomorrow; I'm on Telos and wondering how different the conversation trees would've been had I nailed Liara instead of what's-his-nuts there.
As for PC stuff, aside from new games of Sins: Entrenchment (Diplomacy seems to keep fucking up and going out of sync) and Civ IV, I picked up Batman: AA on sale for $20, an import copy of Dead Space (the fuck?) for $5, and the Serious Sam double-pack for $7.50. I am weak. But of course, they won't get installed for six more months at least, because I only just downloaded Space Asshole and Resident Evil 5, which will probably get slotted into the rotation shortly.
And the bonus is, I actually have the weekend largely to myself. Aside from a little cleaning, I have no driving to do, no high-school reunions to attend (though that was pretty rad when it happened a couple of weekends ago), no stupid abstract to finish and submit for a conference...just blissful not-giving-a-shit. I'll also be throwing in a little bit of Go For A Run Around the Neighbourhood (RL), now that it's not five degrees and fucking raining every day. That's exciting; too bad I left my iPod at the lab tonight. :(
Edit: Oh yeah, my new hard drives and my sister's computer parts are in. I may take a swing at that. I may then take a swing at it with a hammer. Wish me luck.

FUCKI felt the same way. Part of me was very interested in the game prior to release but there do seem to be plenty of technical issues to deal with... yet for people who have overcome them (or grown tolerant of them), it seems to really be a good experience on the story/dialogue/RPG side of things. It's $33 right now but I think I'll hold off and wait to see how deeply it is discounted by Christmas. I should be ready for another big PC RPG at that point.

@Gorvi, mostly. After waiting a year and spending $30 to import a copy of Patapon 2 from the UK, and putting in around 20 hours into it, I run across this (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/950766-patapon-2/54908519). Gist of it: Sony just released a UMD version of Patapon 2 in the US, and it's just $10. The guy posted (http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac322/Unknown_Z28/Unknown%20Album/P1011146.jpg) pictures (http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac322/Unknown_Z28/Unknown%20Album/P1011147.jpg), too (http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac322/Unknown_Z28/Unknown%20Album/P1011149.jpg). Notice it is the blue box like the NA version, as opposed to the green box they got in Europe and Asia. I haven't personally confirmed it, and looking at amazon it seems the same old voucher version, but I checked gamestop (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=73941), and I noticed the box is different, no longer having the bar along the top saying it's a download voucher.
I'm very very tempted to run over and buy this game again, mainly because save files don't transfer between the NA version and the UK version. And with Patapon 3 coming out eventually, I'd like to be able to bring my data over.
That means a longer shipping time.Shows what I know. Mass Effect 2 arrived today and it did ship from Austin. My new weekend gaming plans now involve lot's of Mass Effect 2.

My wife and I agree that this is firm evidence that the experiment they did with Patapon 2 was a failure. The slim is the 2000 and up. I believe their are some slight video difference between the 2000 and 3000 that people talked about when it first came out (interlacing issues). But one of the main reasons people make the distinction is because some (but not all) 2000's are fully hackable, but late model 2000's and all 3000's are only hackable in a limited sense.
And to Gorvi: they only seemed to have one copy where I went. But I checked online before I went out, and the website claimed they had it at multiple stores near me. So it shouldn't be too hard to find, hopefully.

No changing of plans. You are to play nothing as you stated. No ME2 until the WeekDAY thread :p
Hey, at least we don't have to worry about interlacing on our 2000s! I need to get to work on MGS too. I'm torn between it and DQV on my handhelds.
I had to laugh at this. I couldn't tell interlacing on a PSP if it was in 3D with giant arrows pointing out when it was. I'll wait for the PSP 7000 to upgrade :p

I started playing No More Heroes 2, and it is a lot of fun so far. It is so much better without the stupid over world segments of the first game, and they even revamped the "side-job" stuff to be these retro-style 8-bit games. Much nicer all around, and Classic Controller support to boot.

I wanted to punch myself in my brain by the end of the day.
From what I hear, it's only noticable in some games (like Disgaea) that use 2D sprites and even that is barely noticable unless you're really looking for it. Most of the time, if it's in motion, it's fine.
I wouldnt' be surprised if they did a soft-revamp of the system's screens not too long after the 3000 initially released. I heard it had to do with the pixels being aligned vertically instead of horizontally like usual or some such.

I have a late-model 3000 (one of the "good luck hacking it" variants with 6.1 installed), and I've noticed ghe interlacing now and again. I really found it obvious in the sprite sections of Persona.
So today I spent a lot of time in the doctor's office playing Infinite Space. It appears my sore throat is in fact a non-strep bacterial infection, and just taking painkillers was Not Wise.
I also played my 'hardass executioner' Thorton through to the end of Alpha Protocol, getting the same ending path as my 'moral, duty bound' one. I'm going to try a sleaze for my veteran playthrough. Get along with everyone except sleaze it up on the women. :D

They go up to 3000's, then there are the Go's, which most everyone seems to ignore.
This is a large part of the reason people were predicting a new PSP before E3 this year.

It's too bad they couldn't leave a UMD drive in a PSP but have it come with 8GB or so of standard internal memory. THAT would be a way to let people use their old UMD based games and also have access to lots of PSN stuff with no real additional cost to the consumer (assuming the PSP-4000 had the same pricepoint as a 3000 currently).
Ah well. My 2000 is doing me just spendidly, though I could stand to upgrade to 16 GB as it's full right now. Stupid Peace Walker and its essentially mandatory 800MB install.

At amazon, 8gig sticks are $30, and 16gig sticks are $60. They have 32gig, but they're pricey. My wife and I each have 8gig sticks, and they're generally enough room to keep a variety of games or videos. Not everything (especially things like the Grand Theft Autos, God of War, or the Loco Rocos, which are about a gig and a half), but lots.

As evidenced by my pursuit of Patapon 2, I'm going UMD, but I also rip my UMD's and play them on my memory stick. Also, if you buy the disc, you get Junpei's hat. Not as tempting as if they were offering a soundtrack of the new songs, but still fun.

So I was able to play with a Nook today for a bit. Wife stayed in the car while I ran into Best Buy. Took me a while to find the kiosk but I did. And...well, this is the first time I held an e-reader or even saw their display and I was actually impressed.
The screen is dim and not back-lit, so it looks like a piece of paper. The ink...I held it up close to my face and it is sharp as hell. I looks like a piece of paper even up close. The only thing I didn't like was that when you switch the page it does this little jumpy thing and the ink has to reassemble into the next page. I thought it would have been smoother and more instant than that. I know e-ink isn't the fastest thing anyway, but this still was a bit of a surprise. I thought it would actually be like a power point presentation and the next page just slides over or something. It isn't that smooth.
They didn't have any of the Wi-Fi units that I could see, but I actually came away wanting one a bit. My wife said, "Then get one!" but I can't. I just can't right now.
I also bought 5 bags of topsoil today and only was charged for 1, got 3 bags of cedar mulch, some potting soil, some gardening fabric, some plants on clearance at Lowes, and I also saw gardening bags for leaves/composting for .75 each (pack of 5) on clearance at Target. So I stocked up the shed full of this crap and maybe tomorrow I'll do some planting and yard work. Or just wait until next weekend when I start my vacation. :)

Possibly. Remember, the late-model 2000's aren't fully hackable. Keep in mind, though, that if it is hackable, I have a Pandora's Battery that has been passed around like a doobie, and I'm always happy to help people unlock their PSP's.

Is the slim the 3000 and up versions? I can't keep up with the PSP numbering. When I bought my slim I was in love with it because it was nicer than my phatty. Congrats on your purchase.
Thank you, kind sir. :)
I got the last copy of Patapon 2 that they had, so now I've got it and Peace Walker waiting for me for when the kids settle down. Currently they're laying in their beds singing to eachother from across their room, so it may be a while......

Looking at ebook prices tonight and I'm still floored how they can charge the same exact price for an ebook as they do a paperback. I don't understand that at all. That is why I don't think any digital distribution will lower videogame prices either despite what many people think on these boards. I would think ebooks at a lower price would still be more raw profit, but it's just greed selling some of these things.

As for DD prices being lower for games, Steam has a ton of great prices on it. Of course a lot of games still launch at ridiculously high prices (see Activision games and now EA), but there are a ton of games on Steam for ridiculously low prices.
I had a great day today! I went to the park and hung out with some friends. We walked around for a bit and talked to a bunch of people we knew. We had dinner at Joe's Garage, which has become a tradition for myself and my friends during Pride. It's a restaurant with a big rooftop patio that overlooks the whole park, so that's always fun.
Later that evening I went with a friend to a local pizza joint and had a veggie burger while listening to a live Bluegrass band. They were great! I even bought their CD, which I'm listening to right now. :) It started pouring rain, and I got soaked running to the bus. Then while I was on the bus it basically turned into a monsoon outside, so when I got to my stop I ran to the nearest bar and sat inside, soaked. I had a beer and waited for the rain to slow down a bit, after which I ran home. What a night!

It's convenience. They can state it's much easier to have a digital library so you are paying for the convenience. Besides, just because nothing is manufactured doesn't mean there is not a cost to the product. They also don't want to cannibalize their own profits with everyone suddenly not buying an actual physical book. I agree with you on the surface it looks greedy and unnecessary. However, publishing is still a business. They still need to make a profit anyway they can. I think the publishers are still trying to find the balance between new ways to revenue without that new revenue taking away from the old way of revenue making.

Steam provides ample evidence to the contrary. Put a game on sale for half price for three days and sell several hundred percent more units. Given that there are a lot of games out there that are perfectly good but can't justify $50-$60 price tags, I think DD could be a great alternative, provided the gatekeeper is smart about price management. A lot of the PC-based ones, like Valve and Stardock, have been thus far, while Microsoft simply haven't. (Isn't Mass Effect 1 still $30?)

Was he taking the piss or something? I think it would be funny to have a choir of gay people singing hymns or something with him, just for the irony.
On a related note, I think it's really cool that now-former Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Brent Sopel has volunteered to bring his family and the Stanley Cup to march in the Chicago Gay Hockey Association's pride parade tomorrow. He was recently traded to Atlanta, but he's still apparently going to do it, judging from his Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/brentsopel). Good for him: sports are so filled with homophobia that when you see stories like this or like that of the late Brendan Burke, it's good to see some progress being made in my favourite sport. [/soapbox]
In other news, I swear I spent more time in dialogue trees than shooting shit, but I've finally made some progress in ME2, racking up another loyalty mission (Miranda). Just to give some perspective on how long I let my console languish, I went about six weeks between ME2 Achievements (May 16-June 27), and nearly four months between Achievements in Prince of Persia (Feb. 22-June 20). It's not a perfect barometer, but Jesus.

Yeah, I really only have about five stories or so, they just cycle. We had almost the same discussion about the Mitsuru figure from Persona 3. Again, something about it being inappropriate to have a statue of someone shooting themselves in the head.
Honestly, the whole deal is I'm a compulsive (mild) rebel. Stick me around a ton of liberal people, I start emphasizing my more conservative views. If I'm around a lot of conservative people, I bring out my more liberal leanings. It creeped my wife out when she realized this was an actual part of my personality. It's silly, and I know it, but it's my own silly way of differentiating myself. And at this point in my life, it's pretty ingrained.
And there was a SMT game for the Virtual Boy? Amazing what was on that system.
Kinda. It was this Gauntlet-style game called Jack Bros. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_bros) It was actually the first MegaTen game localized for US release. Persona was the first RPG, about a year later. Looking back at the history, I'm grateful they dropped the "Revelations" moniker and went with Shin Megami Tensei.

I really don't think I could get into using an ereader. I know it's convenient, but damn it, nothing can replace having a good hardcover or paperback in your hands, it just wouldn't be the same. Now, I could see using a tablet or something to replace magazines or newspapers, but for a novel, I want paper.
Speaking of which, I'm still slowly working my way through Eye of the World, and I'm enjoying it. It'll be nice to get into a good long series again, I haven't done that since the Necroscope books, and that was nearly 10 years ago if not more.

I played some RDR this a.m. and I now really want to see where this story is going to go. As usual in a R* game, the main character getting involved in issues that they have no business in...and seeing both sides of such conflict. I finished some missions that were for those who leaned with the rebels and now i'm with the more government leaning side of the story. Interesting to see the different view points.
And I had a Kelegacy like cougar attack last night. I had one actually stalk and follow me for quite a bit. Everytime I thought I lost it, the damn thing grabbed at my horse. I finally turned around and shot it. I have come very adept at shooting animals that attack my horse. Kill me ok. My horse, you are one dead animal if you try.

All of this book chatter has me finally cracking the spine on my copy of The Scar by China Mieville. Loved Perdido Street Station so it's time to jump back into that really messed up world of his.
I tried the e-reader that they sell at Indigo up here in Canada. What a POS. The refresh rate as you 'turned the page' was awful and it took forever to load up books. I have read the odd book on my iPhone (thanks free bookshelf of classic novels!) and I expected at least that level of functionality on a dedicated device. I'd like to try a Kindle but the one they sell up here is so gimped it's not worth the cost.
I didn't end up playing any games last night aside from the odd iPhone game. I just read a bunch of comics before my last back pill knocked me out. While I've been playing Patapon 2 like crazy, yesterday my wife started getting back into Star Ocean on the PS3. She made it off the first world and onto the second, and we're both glad she did. The first world was butt ugly. She liked to say it looked like the whole planet was in a huge paintball fight, and all the plants were huge penises. It doesn't help that text on PS3 games tends to look tiny and pixelated on my TV.
But in the second world, the landscape was a lot more tame, and didn't want to make our eyes bleed. The music is even more pleasant, and she's getting into the battle system a bit more.
I'm really glad that first world wasn't indicative of the whole game. Though she did just get a new playable character whose voice actress sounds like she read her lines while in a coma. But we've come to expect shitty voice acting for Star Ocean. We might be disappointed if it was genuinely good.

No, they were just running some old footage of him and his church group singing. They usually perform at every pride festival, and this anti-gay preacher specifically targeted their church this year since it is basically an all-gay congregation. We had a terrible storm on Friday night (and again last night, ugh) that knocked over their tent and several others, and on Saturday morning this asshole was out there saying it was a sign of God's wrath.

That's...really strange. I've got Plants vs. Zombies on three different computers here at home, and none of them have that issue. One of them (mine) isn't even running it with administrator privileges, and it still saves everything.
I did a little more investigation to be sure, and here are some additional details:
The only player file I can access is the one I made while playing the demo ages ago.
Any attempt to save while playing that file causes the game to crash, citing a failure to write.
Even if I delete that file in-game, it reappears when I relaunch the game.
After a ton of searching while forming this post, I finally found and deleted the problem files. I still lost the 3 hours of progress (halfway through chapter 4) I made a few days ago, but at least I (think) I can play. Hooray!

Glad you got it working. That game is way too fun to have the experience marred by weird issues like what you were having.

I finished off both Batman and Assassin's Creed 2. In each case I got an urge to play them at about 11pm. I'm putting that down to it being finally cool enough for my brain to function properly. Batman nearly had me throwing the controller through the screen at the bit where the gargoyles are booby trapped; it was the low point of the game for me, because the necessary skulking around at ground level was the one point that I didn't feel like Batman.
The last couple of hours of AC2 were great. I love the story in these games and I'm glad that they've been commercially successful enough to keep it going. I've got mixed feelings about Brotherhood; I like the concept, but I'd rather be moving to a new time period.

Sunk some time into DQV this morning. I should really be working on the Trauma Team TTS but I'm pooped :P
Man, is DQV ever a solid game given that it came out 17 years ago. Sheesh!
So I'm not liking ME2 nearly as much as I thought I would and I can't even put my finger on why. Maybe it's creepy Miranda/Yvonne Strahovski that is bugging me. I'm going to continue on and hope that something finally grabs me but the game kind of feels clunky to me.
One thing I know, I miss FMV instead of using in game assets during cut scenes. I find watching in game models jerky movement and odd facial expressions during cut scenes much more distracting than I ever found FMV.

Haven't posted to one of these in a while but this has been a big gaming weekend for me.
BLUR:
Got it for $23 bucks through the Best Buy promotion. Super fun, online. Like a Mario Kart for grown ups.
BATTLEFIELD: BAD COMPANY 2 ONSLAUGHT DLC
Bought this cause I'm a sucker for the achievements. I already had every single achievement and got this pack to finish them off. Pretty fun but kicks your ass big time in Hardcore mode. Not worth the $10 IMO.
SINGSTAR:
Got this in the mail from Goozex. Singing Britney Spears and Blind Melon. Friend loaned me his Eyetoy so I could watch myself sing.... very odd and not sure I like it.
FAT PRINCESS:
Played a bit through the single player since my last save file was locked when I bought my slim and I lost it.

There was a parade today and a bunch of stuff going on tonight, as well as the festival once again in the park, but I'm lazy, so I stayed home. :p
Of course now that I'm home a bunch of friends are texting me to see where I'm at. Where were they yesterday when only two of my friends showed up?

Try playing God of war 1 and suddenly seeing an old chick in a blue dress when there was a younger one in a white dress 5 seconds ago. FMV rips me out off the suspension 90% of the time. ME2 was pretty decent in that regard for in game stuff.
Apart from the E3 Force Unlimited trailer. Fuck that game I want to see the movie.

No video of you doing this? WTF? :p
The Gnome Project is almost complete. I have found my old PS2 controller and COMPONENT cables that are universal for a PS2, GC and Xbox. I am positive that is another thing I promised the Gnome.
Just a fair warning Mr. Gnome, the wire on my PS2 controller is a bit frayed. The controller works fine, but the rubber is burned off from a candle melting the cable. It's a very long cable, so when I used to game it was a bit of distance from my tv. On a table nearby I had a candle burning which then melted the rubber :o
I shall try this week to hook up the PS2 to make sure it works then shipping it off later in the week.

I really don't think I could get into using an ereader. I know it's convenient, but damn it, nothing can replace having a good hardcover or paperback in your hands, it just wouldn't be the same. Now, I could see using a tablet or something to replace magazines or newspapers, but for a novel, I want paper.
I'm a bibliophile, and I always thought the same. But there are lots of reviews out there by people similar to myself that say that they were surprised by the amount of time they wound up spending with the e-reader and how it was hard to go back to the actual pulp. When I saw the e-ink in store for the first time I actually could see the appeal. But like games, I'm still going to want to get the most for my buck, and an e-book that I can't share or give away or anything for the same price (or more, by a few cents sometimes) than a physical copy just feels wrong.
Hardcovers, I have started weeding them out. I always loved hardcovers more than paperbacks but the space they take up and the uncomfortable nature of reading them in certain situations (laying down, on the can, etc) because of the heft can annoying. I settle on trade paperbacks, which I consider the best of the 3 physical formats (mass, trade, hardcover).
The good thing is most hardcovers are $10 in ebook format, which is a pretty big savings. Some go up to $15, but that's still a decent discount. Hardcovers are up to something around $30 now, which is crazy. But still, for a book I never really batted much of an eye like I do a game. Games are more popcorn fun for me, while books resonate and have more of a lasting power for me. And for my $8 I usually get a 20 hour or so movie going on in my head. :)

I played a ton of RDR last night and today and am about to leave Mexico I think. I'm not getting bored, but I think the game is waning as I'm not being absorbed by the story missions as much as I want to be. They seem too similar. Still a great game though. I'm put so many hours into this bitch that I'm starting to just ignore ambient requests. I can't be distracted by anything more than the story missions!!
On a sadder note, I'm taking my LED HDTV back tomorrow. I'm going back to gaming on a Westinghouse. The tv has some minute problems but instead of exchanging it for a new one I'm just going to save us some money and go back to my smaller set. It originally was meant for the living room tv anyway, so it wasn't ever destined to be my gaming set. But man...it was/is beautiful and the colors and black levels are amazing, and the 240hz is something I've gotten used to. Going back might be a shock I'm not ready for. :)
I've played it for over 60 days, so I got a lot of enjoyment out of it. Thankfully Sam's Club has a 90 day return policy.

Well like Kelegacy (game playing only, i'm not returning a tv cause i'm not nuts) I played a ton of RDR. Unlike Kel, I am still in Mexico and will be there awhile. It seems for every mission I do, I either find another stranger or try again for the poker chip achievement. One of the stranger missions dealt with a duel which I suck at. That was enough to for me so I took a break.
I once again picked up Toy Story 3 and I think Karak and I are the only playing but people are missing out. Although it's a depressing thought if this game new is $60. I have no idea how much it is new but i'm hoping fans of Rare like platforming/collecting pick this up. I'm not even a huge TS fan but you don't have to be to enjoy this. It's a good game for me to unwind to. I think the real challenge is trying to figure out where they hide most of the hidden items but the Buzz level wasn't complete without some challenge. At least I finally remembered how to roll which made the boss of the level that much easier. After the Buzz level I decided to fool around more with the toybox or the open world part of the game. The gameplay and humor remind me of the Lego series and I wish there was a Lego game that was more open world with no theme just going to do stuff in a Lego world. In TS toybox, again it's not difficult but the charm and humor are worth the change of pace.

There were years of my life that I felt every day was deja vu, except the hell version. Like the story of the guy rolling the rock up and down the hill for eternity. Not sure what made me think of that but I'd rather hear Kel go on again about returning that tv than think about some of the deja vu in my own life, pre-ADDGirl :p

You mean Sysiphus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sysiphus). C'mon! Get your Greek myths straight.
My personal favorite is the myth of Pentheus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyonisos#Pentheus), who was ripped apart by a horde of women in a Dionysian frenzy. His own mother was among the women who killed him.
As someone who grew up in a household with three crazy-ass sisters, I can relate.

I'm in West Elizabeth now and did some collecting and completed challenges. I FINISHED the treasure hunter one, which is my first Legendary rank (completing level 10). I'm at level 10 in the survival (flower collecting) challenge but the last one seems masochistic. Did I read it right, collect 10 of the last flower and then 2 of every other herb available??? WTF, I just collected all of those, now I have to get 2 of each one all over again? LAME.
Tried to one-shot some bears and I managed 2 right away but I killed many without being able to bring them down with a single head shot. I need to upgrade my rifles I guess.
Wait...I just realized I have a sniper rifle. I bet that would work awesome. Duh.
West Elizabeth might be my favorite map because it feels more like my childhood home than the others. Tall trees, snow, etc.

Kel, with the treasure hunter bits, is there any indicator that you're where the treasure is? I could have sworn I'd figured out the first treasure a while back but no matter how many rock formations I poked around, I couldn't find the treasure to save my life.
My kids were miraculously asleep by about 7:30 this evening and there was nothing on TV, so I fired up Alan Wake and spent most of the last 3 or so hours playing it. Finished Chapter 3 (which was neat but went on FOREVER) and I figure I'm now about halfway through Chapter 4. I needed to stop though because the noise of the darkness getting burned away was starting to eat a hole in my sanity.

The picture of the location on the map is about it usually. Usually the images are of a distinct landmark. The only thing the game will help you out with otherwise is if you go into Journal and then challenges, and select the treasure hunter one, it will tell you which of the 3 game areas the treasure is located in. This is actually fairly helpful, but you'll need to find WHERE the treasures are on your own. I fond my 9th today by accident and I actively looked for the last. Just keep the landmarks on the maps in your head and keep an eye out for them as you ride around.

I can't believe you are in Tall Trees already. That's the area I need to be in to finish off the challenges. And that does sound right with the challenge. R* is legendary when it comes to their 100% for a game which the challenges are part of of course. There are reasons I never get 100% in a GTA game, stuff like this with the collecting is a perfect example. I don't have the mental energy to do it. Obviously since you have blown through the game it's not stopping you

I'm four out of five. My brother is first, but he left home for school relatively early. My little sister is six years younger than me, so I was the baby of the family for long enough to have those psychological effects linger. My two older sisters are psychotic in various ways. The one who is just older than me (by two years and four days) is completely broken inside, which I confirmed by (stupidly) letting her live with me four six months this past year to help her get on her feet. After that, I have been doing my best to never see or talk to her again, even though she's my only relatively living in town with me.

In all honesty, that final collecting challenge isn't as bad as it sounds. By just riding across each territory once you can pick up 2 of each flower and it tracks it nicely for you so there's little to no guessing about what you need.
RDR is the first Rockstar game I've completed 100%. I feel like it was the easiest to achieve as well.

If I see evil/psychotic sisters in your movie/novel/fiction at least I know it was based upon your life experiences. I am hoping now a pair of psychotic sisters do end up in your movie etc if it ever materializes.
