I have a hankering for a turn/pause based strategy game in the vien of X-Com, Jagged Alliance, UFO Afterlight, Silent Storm. Anyone have any suggestions for a relatively recent game that would fill that urge?

Haven't tried it myself yet, but have you checked out UFO: Alien Invasion? (http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/News)

Installing now actually ;D
The graphics are so-so, but then again gameplay first right ?
Any other options out there?

I take it you've already played Fallout: Tactics? Otherwise, try that. You can play it turn based during heavy fighting and then use the real time mode to do easy stuff.

Yeah I loved Tactics for what it was. I am actually looking for something a bit newer. The newest game I have that fits the bill is UFO: Afterlight. Hoping there are some other semi-recent games of this genre out there that I am just unaware of.

Does it have to be future/modern in setting? If not, I'd recommend Elven Legacy (get the Impulse version, it has access to all the expansions).

I suppose it does not, though to be honest most of these games that I have played in the past tended to be future/modern. I will look into EL. I take it you enjoyed it?

Not new, but still looks great: Freedom Force + Freedom Force 2.
What I miss in non-XCom games is the base-building aspect.

That game looks very interesting, though it looks to lean heavily on have friends online to play. Am I right and imagining the game plays a bit like the planning phases of early Rainbow Six games where you plot out a plan and then you can watch it unfold?

Here's my JPublic Will Play It archive entry for the game.

Ok I bit on Frozen Synapse. Looks like I will get a free copy of the beta and full game to give to a friend. Who wants to be my friend? It looks as if I will have to create an account for said friend. PM me your desired username, password and email address. Whoever responds first gets it I suppose.

I would also suggest looking into "Silent Storm", might be hard to find the game now, might even be on steam :). Its a WW2 themed game, but also has some futuristic, equipment involved, for example steam punk mech suits.
I always thought that this game had the best engine for a new updated X-COM game, the graphics aren't too shabby, but it has all the destuctive mechanics like X-COM. Hehe its so destuctive, on one mission one of my unit's stray bullet hit a a generator in the shed and ended up blowing up the whole building killing everything inside, aswell the person I was suppose to save :). Take a look I highly reccommend it!

Exactly.
If you want base building, evil genius is the best.

Silent Storm was one of my old favorites...right up until the sci-fi elements started being mixed in. But overall a really good game.
Evil Genius is another one that I played in the past, but to be honest I don't think I gave it a fair shake, I got distracted by other games at the time I believe. I may have to look it back up.
So far I have beenbouncing around a bit between games this week.
Frozen Synapse is a great PBEM-esque game and enjoying it a lot.
Played some PotBS to see what had changed, looked good but I think I missed it's hayday.
Started up Global Agenda again last night since I heard it was totally F2P now. Had some good matches last night.
Sid Myers Pirates was a fun fallback the other night.
Defcon sadly kept crashing on me :(
Aliens vs. Pred 2010 is fun in short bursts.
UFO Afterlight, is buggy but man I love that genre and type of game.
Thanks for all the suggestions, the week has been bearable because of them. Thankfully APB comes out tomorrow, so I know where I will be spending my time for the near future.
BTW I hope you enjoying Frozen Synapse Libuke, send me a game invite sometime.

add me as well, same username. Didn't undstand half your post because of the acronyms, but highly recommend editing the population.ini file and playing EG with unlimited cash cheat and explosions when you get really evil minded.

Evil Genius isn't actually turn based though, so it doesn't really meet the criteria that you were looking for in the OP. It's still a great game, although Dungeon Keeper is better. Sadly Dungeon Keeper isn't sold anywhere online, whereas Evil Genius can be had for cheap on Steam.
In fact I just realized that all I ever played of Evil Genius was the demo, and that was years ago. Yet I own it on Steam, so I'm finally installing it as we speak. :o

Lol, good job magnome. It is real time, but not as insane as other real-time games. Very much akin to the roller coaster tycoon type of game.
