I freely admit to being one of the people who dismissed the DS at it's launch as a gimmick doomed to a Virtual Boy-like fate. I also admit that I was very, very wrong in that case. A little less than four years later and the DS is plugging away, consistently selling more units than any other platform out there. So it comes with no real surprise that Nintendo is planning another revision of the DS hardware.
Like the DS Lite, this update won't change how you play games so much as what else you can do with the device. A built-in camera will let you put your mug in some games. A more powerful WiFi antenna will let you connect to other gamers a bit easier. Lastly they're adding an mp3 playback feature, although no word was given on how those songs will get onto your DS (DS music store anyone?).
This new hardware will launch in Japan by the end of the year for about $30 more than the current DS lite, with a worldwide rollout expected soon after.
