via Joystiq sister-site PS3Fanboy (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/10/27/sony-touts-ps3-internet-browser-as-better-than-internet-explorer/)

The use of additional processing power should help enhance the browsing experience, making it less sluggish than before. Sony also made changes to the way the browser implements JavaScript, with a 280% increase in performance there. The changes are so drastic that SCE's Shinji Noda believes the PS3's internet browser beats Internet Explorer 7

Ofcourse, saying your browser is better than IE is like saying your game is better than Ninjabread Man. But still huge for a device that is not a PC!

Someone who works for Sony thinks that the PS3's browser is better than Microsoft's browser. No!

This just in....

....a top level Microsoft exec says that IE7 is better than Firefox!

That's going to require a time machine.

Most of the news you see on Joystiq gets posted on [insert console]Fanboy first!

BTW, chrome sucks!

Eh... My cooking is better than the dead rodent on the road outside.

As stated, Firefox 3 is the benchmark. Oh, and there's an extra IS in the title.

I can't get the PS3 to play nice with Hulu. So, no.

There's a program to fix this. I've heard it works decently well.

(Though I haven't tried it myself, it's so much easier just having a computer hooked up to the TV :))

The links fixed now.

The new update has supposedly added flash 9 support. Has any one tried their favourite streaming video sites?

I use the browser all the time when I'm having my morning coffee to just get caught up on the news (both gaming and otherwise) and it works pretty damn well for that. Being able to watch most streaming reviews (including GameTrailers) and Zero Punctuation from my couch is pretty nice as well now.

Yes and it works rather well. Revver loads just fine, Bliptv can be a little sluggish but works fine for the most part.

Overall a nice update, it does make the browser quite a bit better.

Well, I can view more than 2 seconds worth of a flash video in it. Firefox is utter shit right now. It really stinks that if I want to watch any video, I need to open it in IE. That is not to mention the bloat. Mozilla needs to go back to what Firefox 1 was about, small footprint, streamlined.

I'd say Chrome, Safari, and FF3 are all the benchmark.

IE isn't even close to comparable, and I'd give the current nod to the WebKit browsers for being on top in terms of rendering engine at the moment. Squirrelfish is also the current overall Javascript champ.

I don't know what's wrong with your install, but I watch flash video in Firefox all the time. Much more than 2 seconds worth, I assure you.

why would anyone use the PS3 browser unless they 100% had to?
my only usage of it was a total mess. It's just part of my PS3 I won't use.

I know the exact problem he's having. It's not a fault in FF though, it's a fault in Flash. I shows up in all browsers and all OS's, but is most noticeable in Vista+FF+less than 2GB of ram. Basically Flash can only handle so many instances before it collapses in on itself. Now if you're the sort of person who has 50+ tabs open in firefox at any given time, Flash just is never going to work.

There is a solution though. You just get the firefox add-on Flashblock and only open the flash you want.

From the IGN (http://psp.ign.com/articles/923/923933p1.html?RSSwhen2008-10-27_091600&RSSid=923933) source:
The column first recapped some of the major points of the recent firwmare updates, with particular attention given to the inclusion of Flash 9 support in the PS3. This was a heavily requested feature, said Matsui, with Japanese fans hoping to view videos from Nico Nico Video, a Japanese version of YouTube.

Sony has actually been working on Flash 9 support for quite some time -- as far back as late last year. To get it running on the PS3, Sony ended up customizing a separate Flash implementation that was provided to it by Adobe.

For a sense of how computationally intensive some areas of Flash 9 can be, you need only consider this little bit. According to Takase, the PS3 implementation of Flash-based playback for H.264 videos makes use of an SPU. This allows for loading up of web pages to be separate from video playback, improving framerate.

The entire web experience on the PS3 has been improved with the new firmware update. Noda cited a 2.8 times increase in Javascript speed according to Sony's own benchmarks. Takase believes PS3's Javascript performance, while not up to the level of Google Chrome, beats Internet Explorer 7.Obviously, PS3Fanboy's headline "Sony touts PS3 internet browser as better than Internet Explorer" and the headline of this thread are a bit off. The Sony execs said the PS3 browser is now faster at executing Javascript than IE7. This is obviously a good thing, but they're not claiming their browser beats IE7, on the whole (maybe they would, but I'm not seeing that statement anywhere). IIRC, IE7's Javascript speed is the worst among the major browsers, behind Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome.

Personal opinion, the PS3 browser is OK. It's a bit pokey, but I can use it for casual browsing without a lot of problems. But it's still not really on the level of a full desktop browser.

This is a weird problem. 50% of the time I'm using FF3, Youtube videos freeze :02 in and I need to close the program via task manager and restart for videos to work again.

It is pretty weird. I don't ever have that problem. I wonder what it is, it must be something conflicting. Have you updated all of your extensions and java to the newest? Maybe it's conflicting extensions?

You might be onto something there... I use Adblock to block all Flash files except on white-listed domains, because I despise Flash based ads.

It is in part a flash problem. I know that, but it is one I have never encountered in IE. This is not germaine for Sony browser vs the world. But the fact that FF is not compatible with current standards od say CSS is the worst thing of the browser, for me. Apple, Mozilla, Opera, etc need to get together and make sure that they are compatible with current evolutions of Net standards. Right now FF is not a browser to me, it is an ftp client and XML editor. And when Microsoft is getting ahead of the curve on Mozilla(while good as it is competition in action) we are returning to the bad old days where we need several applications for the same core purpose, 110 years ago we ran 6 media players, now we need 2 or 3 browsers, not fun.

Um... what? Apple, Mozilla, Opera are significantly more standards compliant than Microsoft when it comes to web browsers. IE6 is the bane of my existence, all thanks to MS.

Who the fuck uses IE6?About 35% (http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2008/October/browser.php) of web users?

So maybe the actual figure wouldn't be quite that high, but IE6 still seems to claim a pretty significant portion of overall browser market share.

The reason for that is mostly because there are some 1 billion Windows 98 Machines floating about the internet. And if you have a 98 machine hooked up to the internet, flash video and standards compliance is the least of your concerns.
