I have a feeling that this story won't be well received, although at the same time it can't be too huge of a shock. Valve has announced that Portal 2, previously announced as coming late this year, won't see release until sometime in 2011.

While not exactly shocking, this is Valve after all, it's still disappointing. Although any dismay should be alleviated by the fun press release they sent out: VALVE ANNOUNCES MAKING GAMES IS HARD

June 9, 2010 — Aperture Science, doing business as Aperture Laboratories LLC, in partnership with Valve today announced the successful completion of an ethics-review-panel-supervised release date restructuring process. Portal 2, the sequel to the ground-breaking title that earned over 30 Game of the Year awards despite missing its original ship date, is now targeted for a 2011 release.

Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision. They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won’t instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time.

“Also, the game will be even better,” they added, missing an historic opportunity to create the first product delay press release to mention that a product is being delayed to make it worse.I guess we know now why they canceled the Portal 2 event at E3.

After L4D2, it is a relief to me that at least some part of Valve is still going about things the way they always have.

Awesome press release.

Crappy news.

Not surprising at all, of course.

The fact that they stated releasing when announced would break "valve time (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time)" makes me giggle. =)

And this is good for me. Privacy concerns are my excuse for not mentioning the reason as to why.

I think we need a pic of Glados going "Nooooooooooo!" for this one.

Aye, Valve is as Valve ever was, L4D2 a terrible misstep as opposed to a trend downwards.

So since the announcement has nothing to do with HL: Episode 3 and Portal 3 is out of the picture: L4D3?

Sad, but I trust Valve to do what is right for their fans.

No one said the surprise isn't Portal 2-based. Only that the game won't ship this year.

Also I don't think an Episode 3 announcement has been ruled out, either, just that the teaser image floating around with Freeman written on it was a fake.

My pet theory: they have a new property that they'll launch packaged with Portal 2, the same way Portal was fed to gamers with TF2 and Ep2.

I know they're at least working on developing new IPs, and this may be the time to debut one of them.

Not surprised. I'm looking forward to Portal 2, but I'm not upset its been delayed by a year.

Also, yes, that was a well worded and amusing press release.

Good, maybe the stupid puns will die out from now until 2011.

Yeah right.

The latest crazy rumour I read was that Valve will be publishing a Duke Nukem game. Silly.

Just because Gabe said it wasn't Episode 3 doesn't mean the surprise won't be HL3! Or maybe even better, the re-release of Narbacular Drop: Brown Edition.

Yeah right. It was either "The date is a lie" or something about "Valve Time" rupturing the space-time continuum. :D

Your version of the press release appears to be missing the last paragraph:

To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE*** surprise or, less futilely, to schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's delegate to the EU's Valve Time Studies Group, Doug Lombardi.

I was just ribbing. You have to cater to the fanbase, Doc, and there are a lot of nerds who love their memes here. :)

Not me. I hope they die in a ditch. That and the companion cube love. Fucking deviants.

So silly. And so fake.

Funny, Valve's site (http://www.valvesoftware.com/index.html) still says Portal 2 is coming in 2010

You know what would be a cool announcement at E3.. That Valve purchased Black Mesa Source (http://blackmesasource.com/). That's something I could get excited about.

You love it! :p

This doesn't mean that the game has been delayed by a year. It could after all drop in early 2011, which would only be a few-months delay. I can dream, right?

I guess this frees up more time for my to play Elemental: War of Magic and Civilization V, which are now my two hotly anticipated titles seeing release this fall. Elemental will probably be pushed back to next year though, so I'm trying not to get too excited for that one just yet.
