To make sure you're ready for the new TF2 server, start using:

The date: Every Thursday!
The time: 8:30pm Eastern

Other Events
Join the COG Steam Group (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/colonyofgamers) to be notified of other events.

Custom Maps
We're not currently running any custom maps on the server.

Installed Server Mods
- Sourcemod, so the usual bunch of admin tools and fun commands (drugs/gravity/slapping)
- Auto Team Assignment. Pick a class to spawn when you join the server!
- Class Limiter: A maximum of 3 players per class, with spies and snipers restricted to 2 players at a time
- Spray Tracing
- Sudden Death Melee
- Team Talk
- Map Voting/Rock the Vote: Maps are chosen before the end of every round.
- CTF Timer: A timer is shown by the briefcase icon on your HUD, showing you how long until the case is returned to the base.
- Reserved Slots (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=20336) for giving CoG members priority.

Talking To Only Your Team on the Server
Open [Steam Directory]\steamapps\[account name]\team fortress 2\tf\cfg\autoexec.cfg (create it if you don't have it) and add this:

alias +teamonly "+teamtalk;+voicerecord"
alias -teamonly "-teamtalk;-voicerecord"

bind [YOUR KEY HERE] +teamonly

Save, and then that key lets you voice-talk to only your teammates! You know it's working when you hear some Half-Life beeps when you press and release your team-only talk button.

Server Administrators have remote admin access and can change the server config, reboot the server, or kick and ban players:

As axion said, a combination of games and school. I argue that part of it has been a lack of anyone regularly scheduling events in the EvAv Steam Community. Sure, everyone probably knows that it's Tuesday and Thursday at about the same time, but I could swear those events made a difference.

Actually, I've heard from a little birdy, that apparently a fiber optic cable has already been setup by APT Alaska (my dsl co.), and that the only reason they aren't using it is because of competition laws and that the competing Cable Company (GCI) has to announce and start using theirs (supposedly on the 15th of this month).

Although another birdy told me that the reason they aren't using it is because they don't have anyone with the tech skills to set it up on staff. (Apparently they've had a digital phone system setup for about 10 years but are still using analog because no one can figure it out lol).

I do have good news on that front. I shouldn't have to setup that wireless system ranged wireless system anymore, Aniako. I guess that the competing cable company will begin using their fiber optics cable on oct. 15, at which point my ISP can officially announce that they have a fiber optics cable as well and can go ahead and finish setting it up.

There have been times as a Medic where I've lost the person I was healing, and ended up running through the enemy's lines trying to get back to safety. Occasionally I'll get a few kills in there while wildly swinging the ubersaw around, and even more occasionally, somehow survive with half the enemy team standing around me.

If that means we can save the money already invested in it for a later date, then I think that makes sense to suspend the server. While I like the thought of converting it into a L4D for a time, I don't see how we'd be able to make deliberate use of it given the matchmaking system.

Matchmaking works well enough in L4D that we don't need our own place (provided there's more dedicated servers out for the full game launch which I assume there will be).

Stick it back up once we all come crawling back to TF2 in a few weeks/months.

There are ways. For instance, you can add a search key to your server, and force the client to only join servers with that key. You can also password protect your servers once again.

Set a sv_search_key to a unique string on the server
Do the same on each client that will want to connect
Start a map on the server
Searches for games should be restricted to only finding servers with that search key

or

Set sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0
Set sv_password to a non-empty string
Start a map on the server
Tell the client the IP address of the server
Client uses console to "connect [ip]" just like the good old days
Should result in password prompt during connect to server

Apparently, Valve is going to be making some changes with the way dedicated servers work and the server browser. They realize that people don't want to host servers that their friends cannot join sometimes, or when other people join, they get kicked (which lessens the user experience of the randoms).

So, I'm assuming they are going to be putting a provision in for private dedicated servers.

I could always attempt to put up a TF2 server on Rainwave's server. I'd be aching a bit for RAM, I think, with Rainwave running on it but I know it has the CPU horsepower to do it. I love it when people die from fall damage inside a low roofed tunnel or room. I think it happens when they jump and then get crit sploded above their head, and it gives them heaps of momentum towards the ground, even though they may have only been 1 inch into the air.

Yah the damage seems to be based on momentum not height, otherwise the scout would die on some of the big jumps you do with him where at the same time you can take damage from a pipe bomb jump that doesn't go very high just because you are moving so fast.

I played a zombie custom map one time. Blue had infinite respawns, but could only be Heavy, Scout and Spy, and could only use Melee. Red could only be Engy, Soldier, Pyro and I think Demo, and Engies could only make level 1 Sentries. Whenever a blue killed a red, they respawned on blue. Was good fun.
