Ok, I played a decent amount of TF2 this past Saturday and have learned that my calling is definitely Engineer. I'll join tonight if there's a round going. :)

My top four are Engi, Medic, Pyro, and lately Spy since I learned you could backstab midair.

It this also helps one be a better soldier. I've been recently trying to be not as predictable with the timing of my rocket shots against Pyros, and being more generous with my shotgun as a result of being wary of reflects.

It pretty much changes ownership of the rocket/grenade. Airblasting grenades and crit rockets turns them your team color.

Everytime I suggest changing to a custom map, everyone on the server is all for it. I change it, then we have 6 people because you fucks don't download the maps.

Don't blame me, you guys should know what we play by now.

The people who upload custom maps to the server should be double-checking that the maps get posted to Ghostbear's redirect. (and bzipping them [not a typo, bzip!] before doing so)

Thanks for the link! I am now using the one of the soldier split in half with the number 6 next to him. I think that's my favorite of the 1680x1050 ones I previewed.

They've been adding them with the new patches, usually when that class is getting an update anyway. So far they've updated Scout, Heavy, Spy, and Sniper. Look for the Scout ones. They're hilarious. They make a couple Vince/Shamwow gags.

As long as I'm here, here are my predictions for Soldier unlockables:

Fat Man
Same damage as regular rocket launcher, with a slightly lower firing rate. Holding down the fire button charges the number of rockets fired, up to a full salvo of four.

Duck Hunter
Crits targets that are in mid-air. Only holds 4 shells.

Grave Digger
Lowered damage. Produces an area knock-back effect like a rocket blast.

It was admitted to be a hoax, and I didn't believe it either as I use Google Reader, and Reader does a whooooole lot of caching, and shows results rather late. (I know because by the time a thread here on COG hits Google Reader, there's always replies)

I'm pretty sure the way it works is you load up TF2, open the browser, see that it can't download the master server list (if Steam is down) and instead look for the button that allows you to connect direct to an IP. Copy the server's static IP from this thread in there and you should be able to connect.

I don't know how the favorites list works but if it works without the help of the Steam master server (by just checking the IPs of the servers on the list to query their status) then it should refresh normally and you could just connect via that as well.

I was assuming they won't destroy your Steam client functionality while doing maintenance on their end, and that you can actually still run executables on your machine. Is that not the case?

No, you're right, I just looked it up. Matchmaking is going down, but the authentication stuff should be up still.

Even if the authentication is down, you could just log in before the system is taken down. I've lost my net connection and Steam remains active and usable.

For folks looking to direct connect to a server, open up your console (~ key) and use the connect command.

[confirmed] There is now a menu option that will reload all clip-based weapons when enabled - however, this feature currently is in the testing phase and may get tweaks.

Heavy

[confirmed] The heavy appears to have gotten a KGB replacement of sorts that makes him go around pyro speed when their out. This would explain the "vanguard party" achievements that were popping up earlier.
[confirmed] The heavy's minigun cone has been tightened; however there is no confirmation whether this change will remain permanent.
[confirmed] There are going to be changes to the sandvich. However, these changes are still mostly in the planning phase.

Scout

[confirmed] As of the moment the Sandman reduces the scout's health to 95 and returns his double jump. There are planned changes to the stun mechanic, but none have been implemented yet.
[confirmed] FaN knockback has been adjusted significantly; it now knocks back targets based on damage and distance.
[confirmed] Pistol scripts will apparently no longer work. The pistol fires every 0.175 seconds at its maximum rate as opposed to .1 seconds

It's for everyone. It's still early in the beta, non of that stuff will probably make in in the current state. It is interesting to see what Valve is playing around with though.

The best competitive players tweaking the game is a good thing. They play the game in a very pure form where knowledge of the game and classes is essential. However, the specialized classes are not really used in comp play (sniper, spy, pyro, heavy, engi) so Valve should probably release them to the public soon so we can test them out and give feedback

90% fire damage reduction means that if a spy meets me alone in a dark alley he could just run at me with his knife. I wonder if he can still catch fire. Then the Axtinguisher could still work.

I wish they'd stop giving me reasons to not use the flare gun. Not having a shotgun would be a huge downer in that situation.

Edit: How useful is a wrench that stops you from upgrading? That's a heavy trade off. It has to be some kind of excellent speed boost based on building moving bases to get you to give up upgrading.

Good point. I totally forgot that other engies could upgrade other engies' stuff. That could be a useful team with an advance builder and one who follows behind, upgrading. But I don't know if two engies would be exceptional on a competitive team, especially since I don't think you can build something in the name of your friend which limits you to one speed building SG to your name at a time.

Just earlier today we were having a discussion in IRC on the ease of disposing SGs anyway. This does help engies keep a quick, moving gun up, but it doesn't solve the issue of how easy it is to destroy once it's discovered.

True. I imagine they're playing around with a lot of ideas for the eventual Engineer pack. It must be hard because the Engie doesn't actually use his regular weapons that much, so replacing them wouldnt' change his style of play dramatically. I wonder if they'll give us alternate options for the SG itself. A flamethrower SG could be interesting. Shorter range but heavier damage the closer you get to it.

All I want for the engy is an airblast. I'd be satisfied with the force-a-nature too.

Even with 90% reduction in fire damage a burning spy is still a dead spy for the simple fact it makes him highly visible. "Look at me, look at me! Squishy target already damaged, come get your easy kills!"

I suppose it gives him a hair more survivability in 1v1 encounters with a pyro. I'm not sure I've had one of those on any but the largest of maps.

A wrench that didn't upgrade would also be useful in situations with tight metal. Accidentally dumping 20 metal into the beginning of an upgrade you weren't ready to do yet can prevent you from building something else. Instead you have to dump the rest of your metal into the upgrade and then go get more, sacrificing the time your next object could have been building, or you immediately go grab a 200 metal box sacrificing the metal you had left.

Changing the range on the sentry guns would be a great way to break many existing maps.

Random, since pyros (at least how I play it) and spies are always trying to sneak around the alternate routes, I see 1v1 encounters (with the super fire suit) a common thing. Going for the backstab because even if they miss the fire won't hurt much. A lot depends on whether the fire suit prevents them from remaining on fire like the pyro suit does. Maybe one suit lowers the damage, the other one removes the DoT?

Good point on mistakenly starting an upgrade in regards to the Engineer.

Oops, I misread that. With 2 engies around it'd just be a trade off between getting a lvl1 up fast or getting a lvl2 or lvl3 up fast. With the crappyness of a lvl1 I doubt I'd ever go for the alternate wrench.

Nothing would change for the regular sentry, but there could be a secondary sentry that has a shorter range but has a more deadly fire blast. I don't see how that would break anything. It'd be an alternate, so not everyone would use it.

I certainly hope we get some kind of alternate sentry gun. If all they do is give the engineer a different wrench/pistol/shotgun it likely won't change his style of play that much. The vast majority of his time spent and kills will still come from building and maintaining the same old sentry.

Maybe instead of a sentry then it would be more like the Heavy's minigun, but on a movable mount. Maybe charge metal to break down the mount to move it and redeploy.

My key to offensive engineer is to go behind the enemy team and build a base. Of course this has downsides such as if your team can't push for it to be worth it or if everyone takes the teleporter and doesn't push the points and no one left is to defend. But on those occasions when all goes to plan is so satisfying!

I do know though, that my offensive engineer doesn't always help and sometimes makes our defeat easier, where an offensive engineer who builds closer to the front, but not too far back and not trying to get around as I do could be much more helpful. Even if they have to make the choice of rebuilding forward or waiting for the fight to comeback.

I prefer the kind of offensive engi that builds close to the team. It's much more viable than risking death to get behind enemy lines, and those dispensers always come in handy when it comes to maintaining a push.

That is the great thing about the bow, you don't have to try for a headshot, just hit anybody, anywhere. Makes it fairly effective at pointblank range against somebody trying to melee you, long as you're facing them it is pretty hard to miss.

Uh, at pointblank range you should have a near perfect chance of getting killed. That is the trade-off for being able to reach out and touch somebody. I'm not being a hater, I'm just calling it the way I see it. :)

You complaining about sniper being at a disadvantage at close range makes about as much sense as pyros complaining they're impotent at long range. Those are just tradeoffs that balance each of those classes.

Point blank no scope 1-hit anywhere on the body kills are just as cheap in TF as they were in CS. :)

Finally! I've been wanting a King of the Hill mode for a long time. Three minutes seems like a really short time to hold the point, especially since it doesn't reset completely when you lose it. Guess we'll see how it goes, but I anticipate short rounds. Perhaps the timer stalls if an enemy player is on the point?

So steam just downloaded a sizable update to my TF2, update is released i believe.

New Content:

* Added King Of The Hill game mode.
* Added custom animations played by the losing team during the post-win state. They are moved into third person camera to enjoy them.
* Added lots of new hats.
* Added koth_Viaduct.
* Added ctf_Sawmill
* Added community map Arena_Offblast
* Added community map Cp_Yukon

Additions / Changes:

* Added "Auto Reload" option to the multiplayer advanced options.
* Clip-based weapons that reload a full clip at a time can now have their reloads aborted by firing.
* Pistol now fires at a fixed rate, not based on the speed at which you press the firing button.
* Added a color blind option to add a Jarate icon above enemies who are busy accepting a terrifying existence where they have no dignity.
* Significantly reduced the amount of network traffic being sent.
* Capturing the flag in a CTF game mode gives the entire capturing team 10 seconds of critboost.
* Sappers attached to a teleporter automatically place another Sapper on the other end of the teleporter, if it exists.
* Engineers wrenching a teleporter will repair the other end as well, and remove Sappers from both if they exist.
* Disguised Spies no longer trigger On-Hit effects (like the Blutsauger's heal).
* Removed self-inflicted minicrits. Fixes Jarate'd Soldiers/Demomen having ineffective rocket/grenade jumps.
* Added an item panel to the spectator cam that shows non-standard items being carried by the player you're spectating.
* Added an "Inspect" key that allows you to look at items being carried by your team mates.
* Backpack improvements:
- Added drag & drop to move items around. Item positions are maintained on the backend.
- Added multi-select, allowing you to delete multiple items at once.
- Added a new key to the key binding page that opens your inventory directly to your backpack.
- Fixed mouseover panel being incorrectly position when the backpack first appears.
* Cloaked Spies standing in valid backstab positions no longer raise their knife.
* Added current map name and gametype to the bottom right of scoreboard.
* Added class icons to tips on the loadout and loading screens.
* Improved visuals around flags when they're being carried by a player.
* Improved critboosted visuals, making it much clearer when an enemy has critboost.

- Knockback is now scaled by damage done.
* The Sandman
- A Scout will receive 1 point for stunning an enemy and 2 points for a long range stun.
- Stunned players now take 75% of all incoming damage instead of 50%.
- Übercharged players can no longer be stunned.
- Heavies spinning their mini-guns will continue to spin when stunned (whether the left or right mouse button is pressed).
- The minimum distance to stun a target has been reduced.
- The negative attribute has changed from "no double jump" to "-30 max health".

* Particle files are now protected by sv_pure.
* Fixed critboost effect getting stuck on when you die while critboosted.
* Fixed Timer HUD element backgrounds not being the correct color if you change teams during waiting for players.
* Fixed a couple of issues with the way critboosts affected The Huntsman and the Spy's knife.
* Fixed an exploit where you could reload The Huntsman faster than intended.
* Fixed Heavy "civilian" exploit.
* Fixed a set of exploits using the DXSupport config files.
* Fixed r_screenfademinsize and r_screenfademaxsize exploits.
* Fixed sentries firing at a fully cloaked Spy if they're still the closest target.

Community requests:

* Added a HUD element for hybrid CTF & CP maps.
- Supports 1 or 2 flags, and any number of CPs.
- Mapmakers need to place a "tf_logic_hybrid_ctf_cp" entity in their map to enable it.
* Added custom kill server log text "train" and "saw" for deaths caused by these environmental hazards.
Format: "%s<%i><%s><%s>" committed suicide with "world" (customkill "%s") (attacker_position "%d %d %d")
* Added new "medic_death" event for server logs
Format: "%s<%i><%s><%s>" triggered "medic_death" against "%s<%i><%s><%s>" (healing "%d") (ubercharge "%s")
- healing is the amount the Medic healed in that life
- ubercharge (1/0) is whether they died with a full charge
* Added "func_respawnflag" trigger entity. It will remove & return the flag if a flag carrier touches it, or if the flag falls into it.

We all know they have great writers over there, but I'm glad they use them even for the little things like updates.

This abandoned mountaintop coalmine was repurposed by shadowy operatives into a top secret surveillance outpost—one which also, so nobody gets wise, insidiously continues to mine coal. There is also a log hanging in the center of the map—possibly as an example to other logs. Logs that said too much.

So when it says "Übercharged players can no longer be stunned." Does this mean invulnerable ubers or both invulnerable and Kritzkreig? Also, does that mean the achievement for stunning Übercharged units no longer exist?

But you charge "Übercharge" to 100% for both. I agree it probably only works on Kritzkrieg yeah, because if you can be stunned invulnerable your not really invulnerable then. They both still are "Übercharges" though, just different affects.

I also find is strange that they never changed the scoreboard and a Kritzkrieg and a Invulnerable will both give you a point under "invulnerable" section (or whatever it is called), if they we're putting them under the same category then I would think they would change it to "Übercharge" or something like that. (Anyways enough of my rambling.)

The self-knockback has also changed to respect the firer's view angle. Looking up while shooting will no longer propel the enemy upwards
The enemy knockback now only works in close range and behaves more like the Pyro's air blast
Knockback is now scaled by damage done


This alone has made this update worth it. Such a pain in the ass.

The update broke sourcemod (http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?p=899084#post899084). I've backed out the vdf file into a directory with a very obvious name just to get the server up.

Admin duties fall to those with rcon until it gets fixed. My client hasn't finished updating and my ping is averaging 225-2000+ms so I won't be around much longer this evening.

Great games tonight, even if we had a few problems getting the server going and the lack of sm mod.

I think all the changes are for the best, and the new maps as well as KOTH mode are fantastic. Valve continues to go above and beyond my expectations for this title and after nearly 2 years it is still my most played and enjoyed game.

I might not have been on when he was; the most aggravating thing last night was some player with "Old Fart" in his name. I know there's a mute option, but he had the most painful voice and would just not stop talking about every little mundane thing that happened. I had fun messing with him, though :D

I quit on the new cp_Yukon map last night because of Mr annoying voice, but I really liked what I saw of it. Hopefully TF2 Friday is a go again this week, and chances are I'll be playing sporadically throughout the day as well.

I think it would be a bit better if the countdown was stalled if an enemy player is on the point, similar to how a capture is stalled. The timer would still tick down while the enemy team is mostly respawning, but while there is heavy fighting on the point it'll freeze.

Sourcemod back in place, they did a point release overnight just to get things working. A real release is in the near future.

I think I got all of the plugins back in, class restrictions, spray trace, afk manager, melee.

Cleaned up some cruft in the config files to get rid of as many error messages as I could in the startup log. Just about every error in there now is Valve's not ours.

All of the new maps were stuck on the end of the mapcycle. Juggled them around, trying to keep the types spread out for variety. Removed 2fort and Hydro from the cycle. Admins can still switch to them or put them up for vote if you find yourself in an alternate universe where most of the server wants to play either of them. First map on server start is still 2fort, can't do anything about that one.

Server funds are getting low, could use a few donations to keep the CoG TF2 server running, donate here (http://www.gameservers.com/clanpay/?clanid=307b8be420907f36e673ecc7959d7ee5) if you'd like. More details about this are in the original post.

You didn't get the "Best offensive fungineer" title for nothing. As for tonight, there may be strippers involved, which means no TF2, unless they got Free Wifi like Panera Bread. I doubt I could effectively split my attention b/w naked women and TF2 anyways
