I almost jumped in just a second ago, but I'm in the school library to finish something that HAS to be done tonight and I just can't let myself get distracted. Hopefully I'll get to join in on next weeks game, I've missed being killed repeatedly by Wackman and Ten19 so very, very badly.

Mann Manor has (appropriately) replaced Mountain Lab in our server map list, though if the new background alludes to anything it's definitely a new Halloween map at the least.

I've been running around as an offensive Engi, using the Gunslinger and Widowmaker to great effect. Since you can throw down a combat turret and dispenser with one set of metal, you are pretty much combat ready to reek havoc on the other team at any time any place. It reminds me of playing a Warlock in WoW, which is good. :p

Beep Boop Son kills me no matter how many times I watch it.
Offensive engie is all kinds of fun. My strategy usually revolves around being as forward as possible with teleporters and setting up dispensers at choke points for the team. Then its all about finding a corner or alt route, setting up a turret and trying to lure people into my trap. Sometimes it works, other times...not so much, but I feel I'm doing my part to help the team. It can also be valuable to stay just behind the push and set up turrets to add some suppressive firepower, but I like playing lone wolf. It rarely pays off in the score department, but its still fun.
So I like the dynamic of the Halloween map, but it turns into a scout clusterfuck. I spotted my first present today and was a split second from picking it up on my soldier when a scout charged past me and ganked it. Seems like playing scout is the only way to take full advantage of the mechanics and drops.

I noticed the Scout clusterfuck too, which is what prompted me to play Engie in the first place. Let's just say, the Scouts don't get far.
I don't do any trap luring with the offensive Engie or anything like that, though I set up a little den of horror so to speak. I put the tele, dispenser and turret in separate but nearby locations (so a spy can't get them with one swipe), placing the dispenser in an area I can easily run away to that doesn't already have ammo/health spawns, and the turret in some offensively nice position. And then I go shotgunning nonstop without having to reload, letting the turret grab my back/give me backup. I put turret explode/deploy on a hotkey so that I can redeploy when being chased. It works wonders. Plus I found out that you can save the Gunslinger crit and just unleash it on some unlucky person.

Definitely. Scout and spy fuckshow. The scouts because everyone and their mother is trying to get the drops, which of course, in turn is causing Monocolous to not get killed at all on many servers (no prob on class limited servers, thankfully). The spies because when Monocolous does appear, at first everyone starts tearing into him. Everyone except the worthless spies. Suddenly everyone's getting backstabbed, then when they respawn and instead of working on MonoC more, they start attacking the other team and it degrades in a vicious circle.
I get what Valve was going for with this map, but making the loot dependant upon a dual team-based challenge being completed with no thought left to the rest of the game but without the negative feedback for not participating (can't figure how to word that any better). Bluntly, they should have made it so anyone killing the other team repeatedly during Monocolous being up should be punished for it. That or lower Monocolous's health to 2/3 of what it is and make the loot ending have nothing to do with how fast your class is. Scouts shouldn't have an unbalance like this.
Really, it doesn't matter to me since I just bought all the costumes, but I can recognize how silly it is that I haven't seen anyone getting into loot island outside of the first CoG night except for a rare occasion. So something is definitely out of balance.

Yeah I'll never get the Monoculous achievement or the Bombonomicon. Since I missed the first wave of everyone getting it people just go around ignoring Monoculous and/or kill me in the underworld. I think what would have fixed this the most is the two teams having separate underworlds. Oh well, there are worse things in life, at the very least I got to see him in action and picked up a present. I felt that Horseless Headless Horsemann was more fun though.

That's making a fairly large assumption that Valve wanted the two teams working together to take Monoculus down, and I don't think that's the case. When people make a truce to fight him, he's a stupidly simple, boring and easily defeated boss, as opposed to an explosive element of chaos in an otherwise already chaotic and contentious game. Valve also aren't the sort of developer to leave things to chance; if they intended a cease fire, they'd have either enforced it, or only made one team to begin with. Teaming up is essentially achievement farming (IMO), and expecting players on the other team to help in a pub setting is not a thoroughly sound policy.
That being said, I've been to loot island at least 7 times, all on servers with teams actively blasting each other while also fighting Monoculus. The primary issue isn't that teams are failing to reach an armistice, but that everyone and their brother is playing Scout in order to pick up gifts. Answer? Play on servers without the _registered tag; they should have Monoculus but no gift boxes. Consider fielding the Brass Beast, which seems especially effective in tearing him apart. As for people blowing you away in the Underworld or on Loot Island, just be sure to shoot them first.
...and that's only if you really care about beating Monoculus, which gets you an exploding lapel pin, an achievement, and a hat, none of which, I can assure you, are terribly exciting once you have them.
The alternatives are A) set-up a password locked game with like minded achievement farmers, or B) try to convince the majority of players (who likely either already have the Bombnomicon, or simply don't care) to play the way you want them to. One of these options will end in frustration.

I consider the Eyeaduct map a social experiment more than anything else. It can be a lot of fun, sure, but I'll bet Valve is using the opportunity to see how people play given that not only is cooperative bossfighting not enforced, but that both teams can use the underworld buffs and MONOCULUS's sown chaos to seize a major advantage on the real objective (the control point, remember?!). It's taking the Horseless Headless Horsemann experiment in a slightly different direction, as the HHH had the sown chaos and the opportunity of using him as a weapon/distraction, while MONOCULUS! grants wicked speed, invincibility, and crits for a long time to anyone who chooses to abandon the fight and traverse the underworld - yet you cannot capture points while MONOCULUS lives, unlike the HHH.
Personally I think it's too many variables. I'd like to see a variant of Eyeaduct where there are no gifts to hunt - sort of like the unregistered servers.

Yep! But the boss battle is a huge opportunity to seize ground, especially if you were on the losing side when he arrived. It's the perfect time to destroy enemy buildings and push back their offensive line so that, when he leaves, you can have half your team on the point immediately.

Likewise on both counts, speaking from the other team. I will say that I think the escaping-the-underworld buff is overpowered, though, considering its applications for fighting other players. I remember one time I was playing on another server, and all this one Scout would do was leap into the portals so he could hop back out and kill everyone with the buff. An invincible, extra-fast, all-crits Scout is one of the more inescapable dangers I've yet experienced in the game. The only way to really counter him would be to survive long enough to catch him in the underworld, and I could never do that because that server was already full on Scouts who'd have a chance of evading him.

Allowing the other team to complete the objective makes them into temporarily unstoppable killing machines. That puts me at a disadvantage. I don't mind so much if we set it to be explicitly for farming the achievements or items, but when we are just playing, fuck all that nice lovey dovey stuff. I intend to murder the crap out of the other team. That sounds harsher than I intend, the thing is, this is not a co-op game, It is adversarial. If I allow my adversaries to succeed, I am giving them a leg up. That said, last night I mostly just defended myself from other people killing during monoculous.

I perfectly aware of what the game is about. I'm also aware that shooting people in the back isn't a big part of it. Not saying you should hang back and wait until it's over to start shooting, only that this kind of event requires a collective truce or the understanding that the event is to be ignored.
A good event should never require organization from both parties in order to enjoy but, here we are.

A single, well-coordinated team can do it by themselves, but they need to utilize the underworld buffs effectively and have soldiers/heavies/demomen who can fight while the others are navigating the portals. Even one person with the buff can deal insane damage to MONOCULUS, as I saw someone (Ghostbear? Ten19?) do with a flamethrower.
Edit: You're just not likely to get a solid team for it with all the prizes about, plus that Medic is still an unpopular class.

I'm all for the idea of 2 teams fighting over an objective that only one gets to complete, but not the ability to focus on no one completing the objective. Seems pointless.

Honestly, I'm mostly just peeved about the gifts. Once you find your way onto loot island, the thrill of killing Monoculous loses its luster. You have the achievement and both gifts and continual trips back there will do little other than grant you the invulnerability and crits.
Both are obviously game changers, but they're harder to take advantage of unless you play scout or happen to catch the other team unaware. You're dropped out of loot island just past the first set of building after spawn, so the objective is reachable, but your buff wont last long once you're there. You can gain more advantage rushing the underworld portals before the Mono dies, as they tend to drop you closer to the action.
Of course, if you're a scout, none of this matters. Your quick enough to hog all of the presents (I don't want to pay a bunch of cash for costumes, so I'd like a present or two before the event ends), can take advantage of practically every portal and will easily find yourself right back in the middle of battle to exploit invul/crits to the fullest.

Not just the gifts- I've made Otto loot island twice only to be immediately blown away by some jackass in the underworld. They weren't capping points or trying for the acheivement themselves - just killing everyone else who was trying

This is Team Fortress 2. Farming achievements has never been easy in public servers. Valve is not that worried if an achievement is difficult for most people to get. Many achievements are designed to be really frustrating, so only a small minority of players will ever get them.

Every server I have been on sees an end to hostilities when he appears. There are often a couple of guys who are still going around killing, but everyone else (including me) just shoots the Eye.

Now here's something neat: Valve's TF2 store now offers the Soldier's Grenadier's Softcap as a real hat. (http://store.valvesoftware.com/product.php?i=H0627) This is far from the first time Valve has offered hats like the ones found in their games, but this one's different. You see, the Grenadier's Softcap - the TF2 item (http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Grenadier%27s_Softcap) - was part of the Polycount Pack and not actually made by Valve! I wonder if the digital item's designer gets any sort of royalties for the real hat as well, given that it's based on his work?

Yeah, if we want to figure out for sure where the lag/packet loss is coming from, people NEED to do this or we'll never know for sure.
Do a tracert to the server address.
Then do a "ping -t <IP>" to each IP along the route for a bit, when you start seeing problems, then we'll know where it's happening. I'm willing to guess there's some major peer going into gameservers that is having an issue, but we need to identify which one if we are going to do something about it.

Sometimes a complete re-install of the steam files and sometimes steam as well clears stuff like that up. Long ago I had an issue with TF2 and L4D crashes, re-installs cleared them up

I humbly invite all to consider a small petition on my part to change a minor server setting. From the TF2 wiki:
On servers with the variable tf_allow_taunt_switch is set to 1 or 2 it is possible to switch weapons after pressing the key to taunt, but before the taunt animation actually plays. This results in a character performing the taunt for the weapon being used before pressing the taunt key, but holding the new weapon. This behavior was originally a glitch that was unintentionally "fixed" in the Mann-Conomy Update, and later made into a server side option at community request.
Much like we retained the OVERTIME! bug via server setting, it would be great to have this "feature" back on our server. Taunt-switching had been in the game for three years, and even after that it was unintentionally removed. It's a very old quirk that I just learned can be brought back from the grave and, since it has no effect on gameplay, I would be very happy to see its return. Does anyone else feel the same way?
In short, I am an explodaholic and daddy needs his 'nade hooch.

I think GB is right, on that one our team was boned. Pretty sure my intention was to stab him, but once I caught whiff of the uber I picked an easier target.
I don't actively avoid anyone, but I will absolutely admit that I know which people are easier pickings, and I actively pursue them if they are in my peripheral. (not just to be a jerk, but because my Spy equipment setup requires me to backstab someone in order to gain a disguise, so it helps to get an easy stab so I can blend in with the rest of the enemy team.)

I like to think that most of the time I'm quite difficult to backstab, but I definitely go through phases where I'm practically begging for a knife to fill that empty space where my gothic soul should be.
Although the more I play the more I start to feel like I'm only commendably good with the Loch-N-Load + Caber Demoman and the Heavy anymore, and my capabilities with everything else have decayed dramatically since whenever my glory days were. Edit: Unless you count the dedicated pusher role, which is probably my true best niche.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I LOVE the hunstman, easiest source of heads in the game past mini-sentry engis.
Also, Brass, what has nature ever done for you? Did you know that place still has dangerous diseases and non-air-conditioned air? I mean, this is the goddamn year twenty and twelve, one would think that we have progressed to a point where things like nature are hardships only immigrants and the mentally insane are forced to endure.
