Playing a lot of degroot makes me notice how bad people are at melee.

It's the only thing I've done well at since the patch. Stupid Mac. Even at 640x480, Windowed (frickin' tiny view! Maybe 6" in width?), and with the lowest graphics settings, I still run into issues with everyone and my aim warping ~once every couple seconds. I'm not sure what the variables are, but it might be related to how long I've been playing.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW (thanks, wiki.teamfortress.com!)
The Gas Jockey's Gear set's bullet vulnerability applies to melee damage. Apparently melee attacks count as bullets! Be warned on maps like DeGroot Keep.
The Sticky Jumper, like the Soldier's equivalent, makes the Demoman immune to all sources of explosive self damage. This means you can shoot the Loch 'N' Load point blank or blow the Ullapool Caber without sustaining any damage at all. I don't have one, but I have decided that the reduction in HP is more than worth it. I *need* that thing as soon as I can craft/trade/buy it.

edit: A bit of mental math suggests that the -75hp penalty means an overall benefit of +25hp if you blow the caber at full health, plus you're infinitely more likely to survive the explosion at <=100hp. Be warned that the caber's melee damage after exploding is terrible, just over half the bottle's damage. Surviving isn't necessarily worth it, in a sense ;)

I believe the last patch changed the health reduction on those two weapons to a 100% damage vulnerability.

Any rules about glitch disclosure? There's a pretty bad bug with the Amputator that can basically give an entire team regenerating health. Was going to post the how-to video but figured that might not be appreciated.

LiquidRain
01-03-2011, 07:16 PM
Just a mention will get us to look it up on YouTube, so it's not exactly a secret now, is it? ;)

It's already been patched anyway. :)

The glitch was you taunt as a medic, disconnect while the taunt is happening, and anyone being healed by the taunt will keep healing (regenerative health) at full rate until map switch or disconnect.

My general line of thought, but I could well imagine someone getting their panties in a bunch if I posted the how-to video. Thought I'd ask.

It's already been patched anyway. :)

My bad. Thought the video said "not patched as of 1/3/2011" but I apparently imagined the not. These things happen.

We do have some sandy vaginas round these parts, but I'd rather know about it so I know it when I see it.

And it wasn't patched until about the end of the business day, when Valve usually puts out patches.

Nice screenshots, dudes. That Hard Counter drop made my day, a great little bonus at the end of my last CoG TF2 night for a couple weeks: I'm off to Israel! Between that and some clever trades I did a couple weeks ago, I now have all but one of my dream hats (pink Bill's, Safe 'N' Sound, and Hard Counter, missing Stout Shako).

For those looking for not-Thursdays, the most likely day tends to be Sunday (thanks Wack!). Beyond that, I think Monday happens a fair bit.

Yes, I post TF2 events fast and often, usually around the same time we always play, 8:30EST.

Ha! I love that set so much. The Loch 'N' Load is tough but fun (scoring direct hits with grenades has been one of my favorite things to do since I first started playing shooters), and the caber is amazing. Just crouch, smack the ground, and you might get a Spy even if you haven't seen him (as I did to Wackman right there). It's like that Robot Ninja game, you get one shot and you got to use it well!

It's frankly a little disturbing how fun suicide bombing is in games, when you think too much about it :/

Video showing off some upcoming Valve merchandise from Gamingheads. The $325 statues are there, but they also show, briefly, regular action figures. Red and Blu versions of the Heavy with alternate fists and hats! Hopefully these will be more reasonably priced.

Hot damn! I just looked at your backpack and saw you didn't get TF2 while it was in beta. We've been playing together so long you could've fooled me. Hey guys -
Some of my friends at work want to do a TF2 night, but they don't have a server that everyone can hop on. Would it be a problem to direct them to the CoG server if it's a night where we don't usually play? (Wednesday)

Lint of Death
03-02-2011, 04:47 PM
Hey Orc!

I don't run the server, but I am an admin. It shouldn't be a problem at all, yeah, Wednesday doesn't usually see much TF2. But I have to ask: can we join you? :p

The only potential risk for trouble might come from the "reserved" system, which will kick "unregistered" players if a CoGer tries to join and the server is full.

-----
I managed to craft both the RIFT weapons today, now that the recipes are available! Be warned - the craft costs are the steepest yet for weapons, each requiring the equivalent of 1 refined metal and up to two of the newer weapons.

That's my only concern. If not too many CoG people show up, it should be fine - I doubt my company of 40 will manage to fill the server. I would like to be able to ask anyone who accidentally kicks someone to leave, though.

Also, the people we're playing with WILL be terrible. I'm the only one with a large number of hours in the game. :)

NOOOOoooooo! Now there's more weapons I don't have! I was down to only 2 left. :(

And it uses the basher, one of the most unnecessarily complicated-to-make weapons already? Man, that's annoying. The Volcano fragment isn't too bad, though.

I personally see no reason why your co-workers can't hop on the server and mix in with us, sure. Just keep in mind that the reserve slot system is in place for if the server does get full (24 players).

I would like to be able to ask anyone who accidentally kicks someone to leave, though.
I'm not entirely sure what you're asking. If a CoG person shows up to play and boots one of your co-workers, you want them to disconnect from the server?

Jackel
03-03-2011, 11:20 AM
I'd say just arrange a night (non-thursday) and have one of the admins put a custom password on it for ya..then you won't have an issue.

Personally, I'm not very comfortable with that. Members of the CoG community have donated toward keeping this server going. Closing it off to them for mostly non-community members to use it would be disrespectful. Members of the CoG community will always be able to connect to the server and will always have priority.

edit: Oh, I'm sorry, I just realized you were responding to the post directly above yours. I don't feel the need for a password, either. I would like you guys to fill the extra space, it is very unlikely we will have 24 people. I would like to politely ask CoGgers to disconnect if and only if their connection causes someone to be kicked from work. They would likely be welcome to reconnect shortly thereafter, as I doubt many of my co-workers will be playing for extremely long times.

Noobs are certainly very entertaining. We're going to be trying to start at 6PM, I believe, so if the CoG people could try to hold off until 6:20 or so, and not join if you see that there's 24 players, that would be excellent.

Incredibly unlikely that I'll be able to get this group that organized. That's why I really wanted a consistent server, because if we have to change in the middle, there's almost no way this thing won't go all wrong.

I think we're a pretty easy going bunch, and the reason we all play on Thursday is because it works for most of us. We make good use of the events calendar in the Steam group. If you want to have a private function, PUT IT IN THE CALENDAR is all I ask. That way everyone is aware and no arguing happens is two groups want it for a night, but there isn't enough room. First person to "reserve" (and it's meant to be taken loosely) the server in an event wins out over other groups. CoG events trump all, well because we pay for it :D

It also helps us get insight if anything because of this gets out of hand.

We couldn't get numbers so we gave up. Also the server was a lot laggier than I expected. We want to try again in the future, this just wasn't a good night for most folks.

Have you tried setting up a local server? It may help you deal with the lag issue. It's seriously not hard at all.

Get a machine (doesn't even need to be that powerful), install Steam and then download and install the free TF2 server software. Fire it up and then get the IP, dish it out to everyone else and you're good to go.

The problem being is that you are asking people who have paid with money and time to leave for a bunch of people we don't know. Let me give you an analogy:

You ask to use my apartment while I am on vacation, I agree. I decide to come home early and you expect me to stay out and go to the movies.

You are more than welcome to use the server with your pals, but you can't reasonably expect those who have played for three years to bounce for pubs.

Huh. Actually, that's EXACTLY what I would expect in that situation. If I was told I had use of your place and you came back early, I would expect to be given the time, if we had an agreement.

You are more than welcome to use the server with your pals, but you can't reasonably expect those who have played for three years to bounce for pubs.

What we have "earned" by dint of being a part of this community is not to be asked to leave our server. Many of us have given much of our time and money making the server and the tf2 community what it is. This is our home for TF2, it is not a clubhouse that we rent out and give up our places in. I do not think that is a strange way of thinking. I will reiterate that you are more than welcome to bring friends to the server, but they are subject to losing their spots if a regular shows up.

No offense, but it seems to me that if a regular shows up to a server at a time in which said server is traditionally dormant but is now ostensibly full of guests, kicking someone all of those guests know "in the IRL" and refusing to leave when asked politely, that regular will soon find himself in an empty server, and won't have very much fun anyway.

By the same token, being a gracious host and yielding the server for all of 3 hours (which, again, are not typically hopping with community members) to a group of newbs which would not present an interesting challenge to said host anyway would probably ingratiate the newbs to the community, possibly bringing about new Coggers and maybe even a few more patrons for the server.

Ghostbear

When you join the server, you are informed that you may lose your spot. This is not personal, it is something we put in place so that our regular TF2 players would always have a place on the server.

"Oh hey GB, I know you play here all the time, but can you uhh go?" No, no I cannot. If TFO is concerned about people being displaced there are more than enough servers out there where that will not be a concern. By all means use our server, but do not expect any of us to leave to make room for people we do not know. That is silly.

It's put in place to kick off pubbies, not guests invited by one of our community's members. Let me reiterate that TFO specifically requested a time when the server is typically empty - and specifically inquired as to whether the regulars were planning to log in during that time - so it's not like they're keeping you from logging some quality time with other regulars. If you were to log in at that time, chances are you'd find no one (or very few) others to play with, and being rude to guests of your fellow members would cause them all to leave, resulting in you playing... alone. That is silly.

It's also kind of disrespectful to your fellow members to say that you don't consider their friends and guests more important than random pubbies that found their way to our server. It's not like anyone was asking members to flat stay off the server for their private party (indeed, the opposite call went out, in the hopes of filling the server), bur rather just that members extend some hospitality to friends of the community.

After all, there are "more than enough" gaming forums out there that serve the same basic function as CoG, but most of us choose to post here because of the hospitality the group exhibits on a regular basis. While I'm a regular poster here, I haven't been on the TF2 server for months- next time I play, should I be booted from the server if you log on and there aren't enough spaces?

Finding a free machine may be an issue, but a plain vanilla install is still a fun experience.

Ghostbear, a few of us who also donated did say that we were OK with letting them use it privately for a day. It was contingent on the idea that we would not allow this very often but they had given plenty of notice. So maybe there is a mixed message coming from those who donated, and I was part of that.

I can see where you are coming from, but also the other side as they thought they had the clearance for a private game night.

I think it's a matter of consideration. Guests need to realize that they are in fact guests. We as regulars need to realize that these guys are trying to get their feet wet in something we all enjoy. We need to understand that if we can at all prevent it, not have an impromptu game night that will kick them all out. The guests need to understand that if we in fact decided to have an impromptu gaming night, they will be kicked.

Give and take.

I still think it's an okay idea to allow people to use the server for a "private" game night. If it's scheduled a week or two minimum before the game night that's not Thursday night then I find that perfectly fine. This eliminates any sort of impromptu game night that screws with a private game night.

If other people of CoG and who donated to rent the server are ok with this idea, maybe we could set some conditions for something like this so there's no ruffling of feathers going on next time this comes up.

I responded as soon as I saw it, I was on vacation last week. I felt strongly enough that I didn't just let it slide. The timing of my complaint however does not negate it's validity.
It certainly moves it from the topical to the hypothetical. This is a server for CoG, any member here (with obvious troll exceptions) should feel free to play on it any time without being made to feel like a jerk. You are not intruding by playing on days when pubs are using the server, you are simply using your space on the server. Any pub or "guest" should know full well before playing that there is a (small) chance they will be kicked for someone on the list.

Speaking of that, I just noticed that our first-post-of-the-forum hasn't been updated to contain relevant information about the current server. Liquid, if you would be so kind? :) I would definitely like to donate again soon, as I don't think I have in a long time, but I'll need money first. Hopefully I'll have a steady income within a couple weeks >.>
<.<

Anyway, regarding the whole hypothetical CoGers-making-room-for-guests, there's a simple solution that could offer just the right amount of compromise. Here's what I would suggest for an ongoing policy: the manner in which TheFlyingOrc requested the game night and everything was totally fine and serves as a good precedent, albeit with one caveat. LiquidRain had brought up the offer of putting Orcy Baby's buddies on the 'priority list' so that CoGers wouldn't kick them when they joined, but Orcimus Prime said that it'd be unlikely that he could get the others that organized. I think that is where our line should be drawn, that any approved guest who doesn't provide a SteamID remains liable to be booted, and of course the rest would be allowed on the list.

That way, we entice new players to join us by way of the guest night, bring one foot in the door by putting them on the list, and then, if we're lucky, we'll get to pull our big white van away with a few new friends in tow!

LiquidRain

I've completely forgotten who helped pay for the lump sum server payment for the year. :/ If ya'll gimme your names I'll write them down.

LiquidRain
03-10-2011, 02:04 PM
I had the list of people who donated to the new Rainwave server, not the one year lump sum we purchased from Gameservers. Different lists. The "donation page" was my own Paypal, which is also the destination for Rainwave donations, so they're all jumbled. Gameservers doesn't support ClanPay for the lump-sum options on new accounts.

If I remember correctly, Bone, you had a large role in the lump sum. :)

(it'd be possible to try and find the point in this thread where we went from my server to Gameservers, but... I'm not sifting through 155 pages)

I did. And while I'm not trying to flex my donation muscle (I never campaigned for or expected an admin position) I do take a little umbrage at this sudden backlash when it was me and Ten19 (and you, Liquid) who basically floated the new server. Umbrage, I say.

No worries, and I get where Ghostbear is coming from, but I still don't see the issue when the private game night was requested so far in advance. I think it is a nice way to branch out and get more people interested in our server, every once in awhile.

And yes, maybe Orc should have responded to requests for Steam IDs so the people involved would have had equal footing (preference) for the game night.

Ghostbear
03-10-2011, 02:26 PM
This wasn't a backlash, I will just not be made to feel like an asshole because I am playing on our server and refuse to leave it. I don't care if it was reserved a year in advance, its always our server and we therefore have the privilege of playing on it anytime we feel like. Lint's suggestion is a good one, if they are unwilling or too lazy to submit their SteamID then they have no room to complain when one of them gets bounced in favor of someone who has.

And while we're on the subject of people donating, it hardly gives you any more right over the server than anyone else. I donated a redirect server for 2 years, does that give me more say so? No, not really (I know that's not what you were driving at Eric). When you donate your time or money, you are merely helping something you love continue. Which is why everyone who has donated did so. I just wanted to make sure that was clear to all reading this, that we dont have some Oligarchy based on who gives the most.

violent
03-10-2011, 02:30 PM
Let's stop pussyfooting around the real issue. If everyone is gonna think solely of themselves and that which favors their interest then all we're gonna get out of this discussion is jack and shit. If no one here wants to be an adult about this then I guess I'll have to be and actually ask the question:

When am I going to be made an admin?

Bone
03-10-2011, 02:34 PM
I just wanted to make sure that was clear to all reading this, that we dont have some Oligarchy based on who gives the most.

I don't want that either, definitely. But we recently went from a free server with a lot of people bitching about bandwidth (really, rubber-banding), to a paid one, with only three or four donations. To me it seemed like the people who donated all piped in to Orc's request... and I suppose we figured nobody had argued so we all thought it was a done deal.

Of course, you and many others are old-timers who may have donated in the past, too (to a prior server, but still "our" server). I get it.

I don't think you should be made to feel like an asshole either- just maybe, let's all take it down a notch. :) I think we have a solution for the future.

Where was that? I saw a message in-game saying the servers would be going down for the update, but they specified it'd only last 10 minutes.

Edit: There's also a ton of people asking about it on the Steam forums, with no apparent answer. One guy does have a (long, obnoxious) workaround, though.

Edit2: The following is apparently working for quite a few people.

1) Start TF2 and leave it alone.
1) Alt-tab out and open Control Panel -> Network Connections
2) Double-click on Local Area Network
3) Click on Disable at the bottom.
4) Wait 10-20 seconds.
5) Enable the connection again.
6) Go back to TF2, and the loadout should be back in a few seconds.

Edit3: Just occurred to me that a bunch of DNS servers are reportedly down today. Thinking this is probably connected. Dur.

New update just hit with a few small fixes.

Updates to Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

Source Engine Changes (CS:S, DoD:S, TF2, HL2: DM)
Fixed a startup crash for some users who were unable to load client.dll
Fixed a "status" command regression in the dedicated server console

Team Fortress 2
Added a missing material for the Scotsman's Stove Pipe
Fixed a server crash caused by the server triggering a nextlevel vote
Fixed the kicking of coaches for being idle as soon as they stop coaching
Fixed a coaching exploit

They don't mention load-outs, but mine is working again since the update, so rock on Valve.

I'm having really bizarre issues, and only with the CoG server. My ping is all over the place, sometimes it jumps up to over 400ms momentarily. It gets progressively worse as more people join the server, it tends to be fine around 12 players, and after that it gets increasingly worse.

I have no latency issues if I disable voice in-game, but that kind of defeats the purpose of playing on Thursdays. I have absolutely no issues on other alltalk servers that are similarly chatty.

Replays are now up and running on our server. If at all possible, could a few/bunch of CoGs hop on tomorrow/over the weekend to play a few matches, see if just having it enabled (and capturing replays) causes any performance issues for anyone?

I noticed a few when fiddling around this evening, but not sure if that's just on my end as my computer's been acting a bit funky with TF2 these past few weeks.

EDIT: Doing some reading up on other forums, seems performance hits aren't that rare, but would be curious what your experiences are. If it causes stupid lag for everyone, then we'll keep replays turned off and maybe bust them out for planned movie nights or something.

EDIT II: Oh, also, I think they're dropping hints for Meet the Medic (http://www.teamfortress.com/meetthedirector/?p=10) and potentially some new Medic items.

Yeah I caught the Meet the Medic hints, but didn't think to look for new stuff. I think I see a new gun and a new backpack? TF2 beta's had a fair bit of testing for a medigun that heals much faster than usual but has no overheal, so it could be that.

So looks like replays were a bust for the first patch. The lag I was seeing solo last night definitely wasn't me as everyone reported horrible lag spikes tonight. Replays are disabled for now, but with each new patch I'll try it out in off-hours and see if they've addressed it.

Will update when I don't experience the lag spikes.

EDIT: Patch today didn't help things, it's still lag central. No replays for now. :(

EDIT II: Valve is aware of it (http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=22254278&postcount=12) at least. Maybe they'll have a fix in for our next TF2 Thursday.

We play every Thursday night at 8:30p EST, not sure what that would equate to for your time, though. As long as you're in the Steam group, a group notice will almost always go out if there's a CoG event, so maybe you could join up for an impromptu weekend game.

So, we had our first replay-enabled night of TF2 that wasn't completely FUBAR. Aside from the pubbie flood I thought it went pretty well. Question for all the regulars though:

Is it worth it for the occasional client lag hiccup and dealing with replay updates to keep this as a standard feature on our server?

Not looking to do a poll or anything organized (yet?) just looking for some feedback. I personally think tonight was pretty smooth, lag-wise, and didn't really feel any client-side impact on having replays turned on.

Thoughts?
