View Full Version : ... only one beer.

So, we've covered this a couple times with different games. Now time to apply it to beer.
If you could save one, and only one beer, which would it be? Every beer other than the one you choose disappear in a cloud of smoke, but the beer you get you will get for the rest of your life for free.
Which beer would you choose?

Which beer would you choose?Goose Island Oatmeal Stout. Which has already been discontinued, so I'm already screwed.

Me, a ton of beers immediately come to mind, especially from Unibroue ( Raftman, Blanche du Chamblay, Maudite, Fin du Monde, Trois Pistoles, etc... ), I am a big fan of the Hoe ( and many other wheat/Weisse/White beers ) and a few hundred micro's and a few macros around the world.
That said, end of the day, I think Chimay Red is the one that would be saved.

I can't do this one. The best beer I ever had was picked at random off the guest ales list at a pub back in Peterborough. Unfortunately, I've never been able to remember the name of it.

This is the toughest question you have ever asked, Serapth. I'm going to have to spend a lot of time thinking about this before giving my final answer.
I'm somewhat tempted to pick a local brew, Flat Earth's Xanadu, but I've only had it once. It's fantastic though.
I'll return with my final pick later on.
Edit - Apparently Xanadu has been renamed to Cygnus X-1, after a black hole:

At first "jump", my immediate reaction was one that had already been chosen, and that is Chimay Red... but then I thought about it and realized that as much as I love how that beer tastes, I find it a fair bit heavier than I enjoy for long drinking sessions. So then I moved on to my #2 favorite... Stella Artois. God I love Stella. But... that one doesn't feel right as the "only beer I can drink" either... So it's down to #3...
#3... not only do I know it's good, but it works GREAT for long drinking sessions. Especially cold. Plus, it's not nearly as expensive as that dirty whore Stella.

What's interesting about Sunset Wheat is that it's based off of Honey Weiss - they add the flavor for the Sunset Wheat post-brew for Honey Weiss. I will say, I'm not as much a fan of Sunset Wheat, but I'm a big Leinies nerd.
A friend of mine really likes Berry Weiss. He's not someone I would ever consult over which beer to drink. ;)
I'd need either an IPA, Porter or Stout if I was going to have JUST ONE BEER for the rest of my life. Not great getting-drunk beers, but so very good to just enjoy.
Stouts, Porters, and IPAs are my favorites as well.
Why am I not surprised that you drink a brew called Farm Girl. :D
It's a great beer and I can crack jokes about my Nebraskan roots while drinking it, so it's a double bonus. :p

And Banacek, we don't have Yuengling around here but when I was in SC in 2008 I bought a case and a 6-pack of their black and tan. Great stuff all around. Affordable AND pretty darn good for the price.
That's why I love it: good and affordable. Drinking microbrews and speciality beers gets expensive pretty quickly. I do feel like a kid at the candy store when I go to BevMo and pick out some new beers to try that I never had before :)

That stuff is beer for people who don't like beer.
As a person who's lived in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, I've spent a good amount of time around Leinekugal's and I've never understood all the praise the brewery gets. They make good enough beer, but not so great that I will believe that there isn't a good amount of blind local pride that makes up for a large amount of its popularity.
On a national stage it doesn't even register, let alone on a world stage.
If you like in that region and want to stay local, I'd buy a New Glarus brew any day of the week over a "Leinies"

Like I said earlier, Leine's isn't my favorite (far from it), but I enjoy one every now and then.
The Twin Cities has some amazing local breweries, the most obvious one being Summit. There's also Lift Bridge, Flat Earth, and Surly, among others. Add in Schells up in New Ulm (gotta have Grain Belt Premium!) and we've really got some good brews in the area. Great Waters brewpub also makes some great beers, and they have good food as well.
Edit - I almost forgot Fulton! Sweet Child O' Vine is a great beer.

Yeah, I completely forgot about Rogue until I saw that. That's from Oregon or Washington, right? Somewhere out west anyway. I was a doctor's house for a party years ago who really liked good beer and she knew I did too so she picked up a six pack. When I tried it I was floored how good it was.
That doctor totally wanted in my pants. I could have married, or at least fucked, into money probably. Ah well. :)
I picked up a six pack two other times and it's still great--wasn't a fluke.
All of us should get together and enjoy some great microbrews sometime. I wish Maine was a state where I could order alcohol through the mail, but we're not. I'd love to sample stuff I can't get up here.

Good choice. Expensive so I drink it rarely, if at all. My friend bought a keg of it once and we had a bonfire with a bunch of friends. I actually did a keg-stand on Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. How many people can say they drank that kind of of quality beer out of a keg? :)
I was at a wedding in September that had Budweiser American Ale in a keg. Every redneck in the place was lined up at the Bud Light keg, but the darker, almost red ale of the American was barely touched. I LOVED the stuff. I hate bud normally, but this is probably my favorite beer of theirs. Keg beer always tastes better though, but this was even better than just regular keg beer.

Wouldn't a honey porter be mead?
No, if anything, it'd be considered a braggot, since there is a mix of both honey and malted grain. However, since the majority of the fermentable sugars come from the barley and honey is just an adjunct...this is beer. :D

Yeah it's pretty weak, but as far as alcohol to calorie ratio it's the same as Miller Lite and Bud Lite, and higher than Coors light. Anyway I got used to it when I was losing weight and still enjoy it well enough.

Not quite. Mead arguably has more in common with wine than beer. In fact, some people will call mead "honey wine." I think that's a misnomer, as mead is really more its own beast and comes in many varieties.

I love me some Smithwicks, but it's a Red Ale, so it's something I gotta be in the mood for. MagGnome, you are awesome. Great taste in beer.
Couple comments. Flat Earth Cygnus is awesome, and at Winterfest, they had a smores version which was incredible. I had a lot of that. Their Angry Planet Pale Ale is also very good, and I'm also a fan of their Black Helicopter Coffee Stout. Actually, I have a growler of Angry Planet in my fridge right now.
Another favorite is Left Hand's Milk Stout. And their Sawtooth Ale. Or combine them to make the "Mootooth". I had that last year at the St. Paul Summer Beer Fest, and it was amazing.
All that said, picking just one to keep, it would be Summit Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is my favorite type of beer, and Summit makes one of my favorite Oktoberfests.

It's an okay beer, but comparing it to Budweiser is a bit harsh. Besides...wasn't Bud bought out by Belgium anyway? It's important to note that Belgium brews tend to be bold and fruity, whereas Stella is a more down to earth kinda brew. And it's fairly cheap.

Actually, I enjoy Bud Lite w/ Lime, but I would never ever tell you it was a good beer. As a drink though, its actually pretty good, especially if you intend to drink for many hours and would like to still function.
Frankly, the vast majority of beers I really like will put you on your ass after an hour or so. A night of drinking La Fin Du Monde, Maudite or Chimay will kill you. On the same accord, most stouts and ales sit incredibly heavily, so after a few you are bloated as hell. Not exactly the type of drink to toss back while playing a round of golf. This is why Corona is so damned popular, outside of its trendyness, its just so damned drinkable. I could easily put down a case of it at a cottage and function at near sober levels.
I can't get into flavored beers. I've tried a few and the first taste is usually ok but the second they get a bit warm they taste like ass. At least that is my experience with them.

See, brown beers ( Coors, Blue, Bud, etc... ) are too carbonated. This is the hindrance to mass consumption of say Coors Lite, unless you burp alot.
As to the local brews, I figure since Steam Whistle is quite literally my neighbour I ought to drink it more. Frankly, I don't mind Steam Whistle, its a decent beer, just not something I would drink on a daily basis. Mill Street is very hit or miss. Mill Street Organic is piss in a bottle, the Coffee Porter is quite good, if such things are your cup of tea ( not mine! ), but Mill Street Belgian Wit is quite good, would be great if they axed the orange zest.
I do plan to send a good bit of time at the Bier Markt and Smokeless Joes, especially if Joes still always keeps a guest handpumped cask on tap at all times. Looking forward to exposure to true beer pubs, London is a bit of a wasteland in that regard, with only two or three bars with a range of non-domestic non-macro brews on tap.
When I was cottaging last year up in the Muskoka's, I was exposed to a ton of their microbrews. Wanna know something? Cottage country sucks balls at making beer.

I don't like flavored beers either. I really don't even care for wheaty beers like Bud Light Wheat, it has a nasty sweet honey flavor that I just don't like. But I HIGHLY suggest trying Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. Don't drink it like it's a beer, it actually tastes more like cherry soda.
I could never pick one beer. It's just not possible. There are as many moods and settings for beer drinking as there are beers to drink. Sometimes I like a light blonde ale, sometimes I like a heavy dark brew. It just depends on the situation and my mood.
