View Full Version : Fallout 3 - 360 or PS3

I'm having a strange internal debate. I don't have a PC (Mac only) so I'm stuck snagging Fallout for the console. Is there any large difference between the PS3 or 360 that it would matter which I pick it up on? Haven't seen where one is going to necessarily be the better of the two versions and I'm having a hard time deciding between them.

Thoughts/opinions?

If both games are equal and lack any kind of multiplayer, I would say go PS3 purely for the stability. That or whichever controller feels more comfortable in your hands.

That's sort of what I'm thinking. For whatever reason I've been increasingly nervous about the life expectancy of my 360 (though it has yet to give me reason to be) and while I love me some achievements, the stability of the PS3 has me more interested and I know they'll add in trophies anyhow if they haven't already.

And while I do better with a 360 controller for FPS games than I do even with a M/KB combo, I might be okay as Drake gave me no real trouble on the fighter front.

The PS3 version has trophies. So...

I would buy it on 360. It's supposed to be a poor port to the PS3 (big surprise). If it won't run properly on my PC, I'm going to get it on 360.

Apparently the PS3 version is SLIGHTLY worse than the 360 version and the difference is purely down to a slightly choppier framerate and the objects are jaggier/rougher in the distance, not to mention that they textures are muddier up close. The 360 version looks better but it’s not like the PS3 version is bad so if you only have a PS3 don’t panic you will still love the game.

I would definitely go for the 360 route. Not at all a bad game for PS3, but if I can have less aliasing, clearer textures and smoother framerates I think that warranties a 360 purchase. I have an E6400 with an 8800GT, I'm hoping I can make it pretty on my PC.

If PC is not an option then go with the 360 for the following reasons:

1. The 360 version looks a little better (not a huge difference)
2. The 360 version will have DLC

The PS3 version has trophies. So...

Actually... not so much, at least not at launch (http://ps3.psu.com/No-Trophy-support-for-Fallout-3-at-launch--a0004730-p0.php)

Bethesda’s Vice President of Marketing Pete Hines has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 version of Fallout 3 will not include Trophy support when the game hits stores later this year, but did not rule out the possibility of the feature being added at a later date.

Most any multiplatform game is a safe purchase on the 360. They are just tended to better on that system. The only real reasons I could give for buying it on PS3 is if you really love the Dual Shock design or you really want to share the loving accross your platforms equally.

Except there's been reports from various sources that claim the PS3 is slightly gimped in graphics compared to the 360 or the PC. Not a huge amount, mind you, but it is a point to consider if that's your thing.

Since it is a single player experience I was going to lean towards the PS3 side, however the DLC factor as well as the lack of Day 1 trophies leans me back towards the 360 side.

Yeah, I'm kind of torn on this. I have both the 360 & PS3...I hate that their is DLC only for the 360 version but as much as I want to use it as a reason to get it for the 360, I always come back to the question of:

"What is the DLC going to be?"
"Would I like this DLC?"
"Will I still be playing the game when this DLC comes out?"

Since I have no answers to any of the 3 above questions, I can't use it yet as a reason to justify buying it on a 360 alone.

Edit: 4th question...will I want to pay for this DLC if its not free?

Church42
10-27-2008, 06:07 PM
Since I haven't preordered it (and really haven't decided whether or not I want to get this game), I'm going to use the lowest common denominator in making my choice...I'll walk into a store selling it...if the 360 version is out but the PS3 version is there, I'll buy the PS3 version and vice versa...if both are available, a coin flip I guess.

Even without mod tools, their will still be mods. It just means they'll take more time for the community to release them.

Played both the PS3 and 360 versions over the weekend, maybe four or five hours of each. Either version is good, but the 360 version is markedly better in a few areas - draw distance, framerate, some textures that were blurry on the PS3 for some reason (but that might have been a loading issue). Controls were fine on either version, though I prefer the 360 controller due to the stick placement.

The inner PC fan in me suggests that you sell the overpriced logo and go from there.

But I might suggest you wait a week or two, see some comparrisons. The only real differentiating factor would be if Bethesda, like Epic, somehow gets user mods onto the PS3. Other than that, it should more or less have parity regardless.

Undecided, I'd get the 360 over the Ps3 simply becuase I like chatting with my friends online and I still like the achievement system, I also play on a 42inch 1080P.
I also want the PC version because it's cheaper and I have running a Radeon 4870 and games just rock with it. Still undecided but i'll figure it out.

That's strange. I played both versions and didn't notice any glaring differences texture-wise whatsoever, in fact the 360 version had some tearing (most notably in the intro sequence) and pausing that wasn't present in the PS3 version. I called it a dead wash really. What differences that are present are so minor that i can't heartily recommend one version over the other for purely visual reasons (the PS3's surround sound kicked the shit out of the front-loaded 360 version though). But the PS3 version did have that nasty GOAT bug (took 3 tries).

May want to steer towards the 360 version according to IGN's review of the two versions... or just play offline.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/924/924345p5.html

However, there is one major issue with the PS3 version that can't be fixed with a reset. Every time anybody on your friends list signs on or sends you a message (or any time you receive any network notification), the game freezes and the screen blurs for a few seconds. If you have a lot of friends signing on and off all day, this will completely ruin the game. The only way to circumvent this is to either play offline or turn off notifications entirely.

So you've got a few different opinions to base your decision on.

You've got the...

....buy PS3 because I own one and it is teh best!

and the...

....buy 360 because I own one and it is teh best!

and then the...

....spend a few extra hundred bucks and get a PC and then buy it for the PC because I own one and it is teh best!

then there's the...

.....I've played both versions and one is slightly better than the other.

Alternatively, you could rent it for both and choose for yourself. Though you'd be out the cost of the rental. Or you can just not buy it at all and wait for more reviews to come out. Decisions....decisions.

Answer a few questions to yourself:
1) Which controller do you prefer.
2) Do you care about DLC?
3) Do you care about achievements?
4) Are you a fanboy? If so the answer is sooo obvious.

I'm no closer to choosing after playing the ps3 version for a few hours last night. I play third person, and i really like the look of the vault dweller on the PS3 version, the lighting looks a little more "shiny" or something.

With regards to some of the bugs present; while not entirely acceptable, and certainly no "free pass" for the developers, i would imagine a patch will be available pretty promptly to sort out the majority of the PS3 version's issues. I'm not really too concerned.

Negative on owning a desktop. I don't even own a PC - 4 Macs. And while 2 of them are indeed desktops, none of them are of the PC variety. I could technically bootcamp it but then that would involve me convincing the wife to let me buy a Windows OS and she'd sooner let me buy all the games on my wish list than that.

Ah well. I was never good at PC gaming anyhow.

Well if Bethesda wants me to have the 360 version...

And yeah, the idea of DLC is important to me though I'll be honest in saying the only content I've ever picked up thus far is the pack for Mass Effect and even then I haven't fired up a new game to play it. I'm one of those people that will hold onto something even though I'm sure I won't use it just to have the option to not use it. Weird like that. So while it's important I can't say I'll ever use it.

Achievements are great.

Depends. Going by experience, the game may be more stable on the PS3. But the load times will be faster on the 360. Other than that, it's a matter of where you want your "achievements" to be, or DLC (if there's any difference), etc. It's most likely almost identical on each.

Grabbed the 360 version and I'm loving it so far. Just got out of the Vault and to the first town. Did one mission that I may or may not have been too low for but I survived and it was fantastic and already some of the "moral" issues in the game are coming up. I'm fighting with what I think my character would do versus what would probably be evil and have significant ramifications.

No, but IGN stated while they both have bugs, the PS3 version had way more obvious bugs that made them restart the game time and again but nothing so super serious they wouldn't recommend the game.

I would suggest that if you only had the PS3 and wanted the game to wait and pick up other titles until a patch is made available but then again, this is only one source saying this so far.

Another comment from Gamespot regarding the two versions:

"It's a shame, in light of these impressive design elements, that the PlayStation 3 version is shockingly inferior to the others from a technical perspective. Although the Xbox 360 and PC versions display the occasional visual oddity and bland texture, these nitpicks are easy to overlook. Sadly, the jagged edges, washed-out lighting, and slightly diminished draw distance of the PS3 release aren't so easy to dismiss. We also experienced a number of visual bugs on the PS3. Character faces disappeared several times, leaving only eyeballs and hair; limbs on robots went missing; some character models had an odd outline around them as if they were cel-shaded; and the day-to-night transition may cause odd streaks on the screen as you move the camera around

I ended up with the PS3 version. The onslaught of games coming out made this multi release a PS3 version because otherwise it would break my 360. I have to spread out those games, otherwise I'm left with no games when the thing dies again.

Plus the ratching sounds of the Fable 2 disc are gone at least. I played the PS3 GTA as well, that didn't bother me.
Oblivion was buggy as hell, so is Fable 2, still love em.
