View Full Version : Valve Cancels Portal 2 E3 Event For A "Surprise"

Found over at 1up.com (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3179578):
Dear Subject Name Here,
Aperture Science is pleased to inform you that we have partnered with Valve to announce the gala CANCELLATION of the June 14 Portal 2 event at the Regal Theater. The event will be replaced by a surprise. And even though the cancellation of the event certainly counts as a surprise, we are pleased to further announce that the cancellation of the event is not THE surprise. However, per International treaties regarding the definition of the word "surprise", of which both Aperture Science and Valve are signatories, the time, date and content of the actual surprise will only become available as you experience the surprise.
If you'd like to ask fruitless questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise or, more fruitfully, schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's Special Envoy to Surprises, Doug Lombardi.
Thank you for <<RECORD SCRATCH!!!>>
PS: The surprising record scratch is also not the surprise.
What could the surprise be? A possible Half-Life 2: Episode 3 announcement? Or could it be an announcement of Half-Life 3 on a new engine? I honestly can't think of anything that Valve could be doing that would be bigger then Portal 2. Wildly speculate away!

I can't wait to see what this is! It would be great if they announced Half-Life 2: Episode 3 for release this year along with Portal 2.
I can dream, right?

Hopefully they'll actually officially announce the PS3 version that was leaked in that UK mag a month or so ago.....
I'd like to see an Episode 3, though, I really thought HL2 and the Episodes were pretty mediocre until the later half of Episode 2. To me, that's when it went from some good ideas in an average game to being genuinely something to get excited about.

A new engine announcement would be great. I remember them showing off source many years back and being completely blown away.
Considering that the only thing released about Episode 3 over the past 2-3 years has been one concept art shot, my guess is: No Episode 3, Portal 2 will be last game released from Valve running on source, Half-Life 3 on source2 to be released fall of 2011.

It's just my guess on the announcement.
Though, given on what happened with HL2, they may SAY it will be released this fall, but then be delayed til next.
Doesn't really matter when it's released (or what it is), it'll be a polished and great experience that I know I can expect from Valve.

I thought it was somewhat confirmed that there would be no Episode 3, but rather that the story would be continued (concluded?) in Half-Life 3. I could be completely making that up though.

But then Newel lcame out around this time last year and said they were re-evaluating the "episodic" strategy, which led people to believe Episode 3 was squashed and they were creating a full length game.

If it's fun after the 100th hour on the same map why wouldn't it be fun after the 1000th? I don't get tired of playing Tennis either, for example. It's just stimulating to the brain on some level. The pace probably helps too, you're not actually in combat for the majority of the time and there's a wait when you die. That always leaves you hungry for more kills. I know I get more burned out on pure deathmatch games where kills mean less

The way I see it, there's an incredible variety of PC gaming entertainment out there, even if you just narrowed the field to multiplayer Half-Life mods. To look at all that gaming goodness and say "Nah, I'm going to play CS again" just strikes me as somewhat perverse. Maybe it's just that I don't see CS as particularly special, it's certainly not my most-loved HL mod, not by a long shot.

You're not always looking for something new to play though, it's nice to have something you're comfortable with. CS is relaxing for me, the familiarity is part of the appeal. It's not replacing time where I'd play other games; if I weren't playing it I'd probably be doing something else entirely.
I mean, I agree that it's kinda odd to play it for so long but I know tons of people who don't get tired of it either.

I think the quote about episodic content has been taken out of context some what. It's been clear since episode 2 that it's wasn't really working as they thought and that episode 3 likely was going to be a little different. My feeling is that episode 3 will be announced as a "full length" game to tie up the half life 2 story arc, which gives them lots of room to involve and evolve the portal side of the story. Which makes me think that we don't be getting a source 2 either. If we where I think they would have shifted portal on to it before announcing it (unless they've already done that and the few teaser screens we've seen have been on a source 2 but that makes little sense in terms of the PR we are seeing) and I think they'll save the major jump for HL and portal 3 and just go with another update and overhaul as we've been seeing over the last few years.
Which does not mean I think we are going to get an ep3 announcement as the "surprise" in this case. I just very much doubt that we will see an Hl3 or source 2 "surprise" that people are suggesting based on quotes that I have a total different reading of.
My own pet wild theory at the moment is that they will announce that portal 2 "is" episode 3. Or at lest a part of it. By which I mean they'll announce that portal 2 is deeply integrated with the story of ep3 and that there will be cross overs of a kind between the two games.

Known plot details indicate that Portal 2 takes place hundreds of years after the first game, putting it well past the possible timeline of Episode 3. In addition, one of the best researched Half-Life timelines (http://www.members.shaw.ca/halflifestory/timeline.htm) places the disappearance of the Borealis before the start of the original Half-Life, and the events in Portal likely happen after that game.
Although it is possible that the co-op storyline does take place before the events in Portal, back when Aperture Science was a functioning company and GLaDOS had yet to be activated.
