A really interesting one is DC comic's Doctor Thirteen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Thirteen). He's basically a hard-core skeptic and debunker, but he exists in a world where the paranormal is...well normal. A very different take, maybe too different for you.

If you're going with Hellboy, may as well include the entire BPRD (Abe, Kate, Liz, Roger, even more).
If you're going to include Elsa Bloodstone, don't forget her father Ulysses Bloodstone.
Speaking of Marvel, you've got the entire Midnight Sons group, that includes Blade, Morbius, Ghost Rider, so on.
Trying to think of DC people, all I can really think of is Jason Blood/Etrigan, though they mostly deal with magic users.
Solomon Kane.
EDIT: Oh yes, Cassie Hack and Vlad from Hack/Slash.

For those curious about what this is for, a while ago I did a Pirates vs Ninjas crossover pic drawing from all sorts of pop culture. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/37944214@N00/3696762642/sizes/l/in/set-72157621070850746/)

Since then I've been wanting to do others and finally decided to buckle down and attempt the monster hunter one. I was actually worried I wouldn't be able to find as many interesting hunters as I did pirates or ninjas, and I'm glad to see that's not the case.
Since it's an illustration I'm gravitating towards characters that will be easily recognizable in a comic book style, so some of the more normal looking people in this thread won't make the cut. I also decided to try to find a lot of unique monsters to mix in with the zombie horde I'd originally planned, so suggestions for those are welcome as well.

Beowulf and Grendel seem missing, though they're fairly hard to say what they look like unless you steal from the movie or something.
Another unique looking monster would be Tiamat. She also covers the dragon category pretty well by herself. Smaug would be another good one, though again its somewhat hard to make it stand out as Smaug and not some other generic dragon.

Technically, Tiamat is a deity, both in D&D and the original Babylonian mythology. If we're going into dragon territory, we should have Siegfried/Sigurd and Fafnir.

Yeah but none of those stands out or is very distinctive.
In 1st edition D&D she wasn't a god yet, or was at least a really weak one as far as gods go.
Then again the chromatic dragons from D&D are actually not bad choices since they all have their own appearance.

Historically, I'll probably draw the line at the original Dracula novel, which arguably created the modern monster story and established many of the related tropes.
I also have to make some sort of distinction about what kinds of monsters to include. Supernatural and undead clearly make the cut. Outside of that, ones that lean towards a more spooky, gothic atmosphere, as the setting for the illustration will be a graveyard.

Ya know...I find it hilarious most GUYS are upset with the change of character and direction of those books. I myself included. I read the first three or so, then a friend told me they pretty much devolve into porn and how much sex she has with werewolves and vamps.
Part if what enticed me about the books were how smartly written they were and how interesting and engaging the characters were, even ones that were introduced only to die later in the book. It's an excellent series, but I just didn't like the thought of how the character of Anita Blake started out as becoming pretty much everything she initially wasn't and actually was actively against.
I dunno. I'm weird.

Were-KITTIES! KITTIES! Leopards, lions, jaguars, tigers - white tigers, black tigers, fucking-BLUE tigers, golden tigers! AND were-rats and were-fucking-SWANS!!!110ne11!! Then in the latest novel - Bullet she just says, screw it and has sex with Mephistopheles.
Anita Blake started out with so much promise. She was gritty, hardboiled and so bad-ass, such a complete opposite to Jean-Claude's elegant, graceful sophistication and then LKH went and turned the whole series on its head for no good reason.
I hope Marvel goes off on a tangent after Obsidian Butterfly and skips the whole ridiculous arduer arc.

I've updated the lists in the original post. Getting a little ambitious, here. :)
Questions about a few characters I don't know as much about. Specifically, whether they should be considered "Monsters" or "Monster Hunters that are also Monsters":
Spawn
Kain
Raziel
Ghost Rider
Which category should each fall in? As an example, Hellboy is in the Monster Hunter category, because that's pretty much his job.
Savok
06-23-2011, 09:47 AM
Well on that note move Spike up to hunter.
Kain and Raziel don't hunt monsters per say, more fighting a war where no one completely knows what side anyone is on.
Ghost Rider is a Spirit of Vengeance, very much a hunter.
Ink Asylum
06-23-2011, 09:52 AM
Spike is moved. Shows how much I know about Buffy.
Reading the summary of Kain, he seems like he could fit into the Monster side. He is a Vampire and not one of the ultra-nice ones.
What kinds of enemies does Raziel fight in his games?
Ghost rider headed over to the Hunter column. That's good, the list was getting a bit monster-heavy.
Savok
06-23-2011, 10:27 AM
Spike started as a bad guy, but things changed.
Kain is.... well, Kain. He's quite honestly above it all.
Raziel kills vampires and spectral beings the first game. Subsequent games it's humans (mostly asshole ones) and demons and spectres.

I definitely have to buckle down and start cranking out the characters or this will never be done. There's less than a third of the characters I'd like to get in there already drawn, not to mention the background, numerous zombies, inking and coloring.
Really anxious to see it as it fleshes out. The one you did with pirates (and ninjas?) was stellar. You said you had your Cintiq now: how are you liking it? I keep futzing with the idea of picking one up but I'm concerned about the entry fee seeing as I already have a tablet I do well with.

I'm definitely loving my Cintiq. Drawing is so much faster and more accurate. Not having to predict the angle a line will go down and just being able to put it exactly where I want it is so critical.
Even the small version, which I have, is pricey, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't plan to illustrate on their PC at least a couple times a week.

It's called Planet 3 (www.p3comic.com). It's story arcs with a few one-offs in between stories. In the middle of one right now so it might be easier to start just before it here (http://p3comic.com/?stripnum=252).

How much of your drawing do you do traditionally versus digitally?
The way I looked at it, $1k can pay for a lot of stuff. I had to weigh how much of a benefit it could provide me over other things, or just saving the money. Since ideally I try to draw at least 20 hours a week, much of that digitally, the increased efficiency and reduced hassle eventually proved worthwhile.
Also, if you can try one out before you buy that would be very helpful. I lucked out because Wacom had a booth at Pax East this year. It was the first time I'd ever gotten to play around with a Cintiq. It not only solidified my desire for one but made me realize I wouldn't regret the 12" version instead of the 21". Unfortunately, test units of Cintiqs are pretty hard to find unless you know someone who has one, or go to a convention like that.

Typically, P3 is the only thing I do that's traditional and it's a bit of a mixed bag. I use ink/paper when drawing and then touch everything else up digitally. It's odd, I've tried doing Planet a ridiculous number of times digitally and it always just looks off to me and I end up hating the finished result. I know that the bulk of this has to do with it just being habit at this point and I'm used to the ink/paper look of it and that I should just bite the bullet and make the plunge, but it's like pulling teeth for me for whatever reason. Everything else I do digitally and I have no qualms at all, the comic's just the only one that I argue with every time.
And you bring up really good points about cost and testing one too. When it comes to "new toys" for me, I have a really difficult time being level-headed and not putting the horse well before the cart. "Thankfully", my wife keeps me in check :).

Thanks! The game we're playing is loosely based off of A Touch of Evil (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/35815/a-touch-of-evil-the-supernatural-game) (awesome game, if you've ever played Arkham Horror or are familiar at all with it, AToE is considered Akrham-Lite). Mix of that and traditional PnP tossed in for good measure.
Been playing so many board games as of late, figured it was time to highlight my buddy's inability to roll dice to save his life.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2376971/Forum%20Images/MonsterFightTemp.png
I'm really having trouble filling in the middle. There's not much opportunity for conflict in that gap so I'm going to have to put in some Hunters who aren't fighting, but perhaps tending to wounded.
Got some room in the upper right to fill in, too. Probably with a couple more vampires. Eventually there will be a castle back there, too, and I'm hoping I can fit a church on the other side, though the Tank is blocking that space at the moment.
I'm also going to put the BIG monsters in the back, mostly in shadow, stomping into view.
Phew. Busy day today but I'm really proud of the progress I made. I'm hoping to have all of the characters sketched in by this time next week.
There are definitely some characters I'm not happy with, like Simon Belmont. I'll wait until I've done everyone else before I go back and redo them.
Okay first off, that's stellar. Secondly: you have Teen Wolf in there. Everything else is irrelevant. You could color the thing in crayon and go way outside the lines and it would still be awesome.

You'll notice a lot of characters shuffling around. Fitting everyone in and having them be visible enough to be recognized was like a puzzle.
Tomorrow I'm going to start drawing the row of zombies that will be in the foreground, being held back by the first line of fighters. As I do that I'd love to get some feedback. Specfically, I'm looking for two things:
Characters that look awkwardly posed. There are already a couple of these that I don't like and am going to rework, but I'd like to hear your opinions.
Characters that aren't scaled properly. These are harder to spot. The scene takes place on a hill in the middle, so you have characters getting smaller as they go further into the background. On top of that, you have a lot of characters who are themselves generally bigger or smaller than others. It doesn't need to be perfect, but I'd like to avoid gross inaccuracies or perspective issues.
I've stared at this thing so long I just can't think rationally about it until I get a good night's sleep. Thanks for any advice you can offer! With any luck I'll have this thing inked and colored by next Sunday.
