I know the year isn't over yet but it's close. I think I can list my top 5 in no specific order.

Metallica - Death Magnetic
NIN - The Slip
Opeth - Watershed
Hank Williams III - Damn Right Rebel Proud
NIN - Ghosts I - IV

It was a good year IMO.....3 of my favorite artists released albums.

What is your top 5?

#1 - Gratitud - Fonseca - I cannot emphasize this enough. This is the single best album I have ever heard in my entire life if I had to choose.

The others go in any order:

Holly - Justin Nozuka (The only 100% English language album on here)
Con Otro Aire - Chambao (saw their concert this summer for free, too!)
Mundología - El Arrebato
Agua y Luz - Gala Évora

edit: I must've gotten something approaching 20 new albums this year but a lot of them aren't from 2008. That wouldn't have affected this list much had they all been truly new, it just would've made it harder to choose.

Considering there's still two months of 2008 left with several big name releases scheduled for release (Guns 'N Roses, Fall Out Boy, possible Eminem), I think it's a bit early and silly for this thread to appear.

In order:

1. Deathconsiousness-Have a Nice Life
2. The White-Agalloch
3. Twilight of the Thunder God-Amon Amarth
4. Fortress-Protest the Hero
5. Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust-Sigur Rós

Only if you listen to mainstream and the new GnR is pretty abysmal from the two songs they've released. I forgot to say that Cynic's Traced In Air, Psycroptic's ob(servant), Meshuggah's obZen, and Arsis' We Are the Nightmare are very honorable mentions. This year has been awesome and is at least equal to 2006 in terms of awesome releases.

Because he likes it. Why the fuck do you ask stupid questions? Do you really not understand?

And I'm not adding my entry until the Killers' new album comes out.

Ok, so then don't count mainstream releases (even though I qualified them as such). There's still one-sixth of the year left for your INDIE releases. It's stupid to be starting this so early.

It's like having a game of the year thread right now. Pointless and meaningless.

Except all the cd's I've had on my radar are out or have leaked so saying which are your favorites so far is fine. November is the last real month of releases anyways as December is usually a very barren month of releases with only the first week or so being populated with anything.

Edit: I'm looking forward to the new Killers cd too. I like that song they played on SNL.

Why not? It's a great instrumental album from an awesome band.

Who cares if there's still some 2008 left? Let it be like award shows, and the last two months of this year count as 2009 :p

It wouldn't change my #1 either way.

I love NIN, but I think Ghosts was just a cool little curiosity at best. Nothing groundbreaking or anything.

In no particular order, my favorites from this year so far:

Metallica - Death Magnetic
TV On The Radio - Dear Science
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
The Cool Kids - The Bake Sale

And uhh, that's all I can think of that really stood out this year so far.

I didn't list The Slip because there was really only 3 or 4 songs from there I listen to a lot.

The Riot Before - Fists Buried in Pockets
Dillinger Four - Civil War

Lemuria - Get Better

I LOVE this album. Technically it came out last year (digitally), but retail copies weren't available till January, so I'm counting it! :D

It's a bit early as there are some notable upcoming releases, but so far:

The Flashbulb - Soundtrack to a Vacant Life
2562 - Aerial
Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
Obfusc - Cities of Cedar
Portishead - Third
Squarepusher - Just A Souvenir

I thought M83's latest album was pretty disappointing as well as Sigur Rós's.

I would like to add one album that I just remembered came out very early in 2008. Ayreon - 01011001. It introduced me to Ayreon and a new group that I love. Not sure if it would overtake Ghosts but it's a strong honorable mention.

I'm also a huge NIN fan... very huge.. like, go to each show in area thats drivable huge... but I'm going to have to disagree with you by saying both of their albums are not top 5 album of the year worthy... In fact, I thought they were way below par of NIN.

As far as NIN albums go The Slip and Ghosts aren't my favorites but they are still good albums. Plus The Slip has grown on me since it released.

My top 5 for 2008.

Pendulum - In Silico
Disturbed - Indestructable
Joe Satriani - Professor Satchafunkilus
Shinedown - The Sound of Madness (honestly, this one caught me by surprise but after their stint as openers for Disturbed, they impressed me.)
NIN - Ghosts I-IV.

Been a hell of a year so far for music I like.

1. Portishead - Third
2. Dive Deep - Moorcheeba
3. The Black Mages - The Black Mages III: Darkness and Starlight
4. Thievery Corporation - Radio Retaliation

Yeah, that's about it. I can't quite put Death Magnetic up as I've only heard about 4 tracks, but I did like them.

Dear Science, Third, The Slip, and Nouns are what I dug more than other new albums this year. Microcastle is also exceptional, which I think technically came out last year but comes out this month physically.

Oh, and I absolutely adored Narrow Stairs.

Also, Human is made of awesome, so I have a lot of hope for Day and Age.

1. Rise Against - Appeal To Reason

I really can't think of anything else off the top of my head, not because nothing was good just nothing stuck with me.

digitalErich

I still have some catching up to do (missed the new Morcheeba album for example), but so far it's...

The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Sigur Ros - Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust
Black Crowes - Warpaint
Duffy - Rockferry or Adele - 19 (these are interchangeable)

I know I'll get shit for that last pairing, but what can I say, I grew up 60 miles north of Detroit. Until I was 9 I thought all music made before 1968 that didn't come from Elvis, the Beatles, or the Stones came from Motown.

No order:

1) Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III
2) John Legend - Evolver
3) Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
4) Girl Talk - Feed the Animals
5) Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple

And I'm fully anticipated any combination of those to be bumped by Jay-Z's Blueprint 3, Kanye's 808's and Heartbreak and the Killers' Day & Age

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Everything That Happens Will Happen Today - David Byrne and Brian Eno
4:13 Dream - The Cure (Just got it, but it's what I like from Mr. Smith!)
Final Boss - MC Frontalot
Lucky - Nada Surf

These are MY top albums of 2008; based on totally subjective criteria and not taking into account anybody else's opinion or sales figures.
:p

After taking a look at my iPod it appears that a lot of the music that I thought was 2008 was actually released in 2007.

I love Portishead; I really do. But that album is nigh unlistenable. I think Barrow made it that way as a 'fuck you' to all the people who were saddling the previous albums as 'dinner conversation music.'

Here is all the highlights of the year for me. It'll be tough but I'll try and make my top 5 bold, in no particular order.

Pershing by Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin
Oracular Spectacular by MGMT
What Doesn't Kill Us by What Made Milwaukee Famous
Lucky by Nada Surf
Konk by The Kooks
Narrow Stairs by Death Cab for Cutie
Way to Normal by Ben Folds
Glistening Pleasure by Natalie Portman's Shaved Head

I wasn't actually gonna order this, but the order actually came pretty naturally as I wrote it out.

5 Pendulum - In Silico
4 Bayside - Shudder/Live @ The Bayside Social Club (Released the same day, so I'm counting it as a double album)
3 Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires
2 You Me At Six - Take Off Your Colours
1 My Awesome Compilation - Frontiers

I'm in interested in the Fall Out Boy and Killers albums, but what I've heard from both hasn't thrilled me as of yet. There's probably a lot more stuff I've missed and forgotten about, but nothing that is leaping out at me right now. I haven't heard the new City and Colour album yet, so that could well make me very happy if I do. I also met a band called Bear Hands who have something out that intrigues me.

I don't listen to albums, I listen to songs. Meaning it's very rare for me to like more than 50% of songs on an album. TBH I don't have a lot of time to listen to new music and when I do I like to play stuff I want to listen to not experiment with. I've listened to and enjoyed tons of new music this year. Just not from many albums from this year.

Oh thank God...I thought I was the only person that hadn't heard of most of these albums.
So, in leu of the fact that I guess I don't buy music anymore...here are the only songs I've heard that I thought were catchy enough to add to my ipod:

Handlebars - Flobots
Pork and Beans - Weezer
Viva la Vida - Coldplay
and I just realized that BEER!!! from Psychostick came out in 2006. So, despite the fact that I added it this year, and thought it was a "new" song I guess I'm way the fuck behind the times.
OH, and I added the Rascal Flatts version of Life is a highway from the cars soundtrack...but that song's old too.

I'm still considering buying the dr. horrible soundtrack too as I've bought the itunes version of the movie and the amazon DVD that's coming out in a couple of weeks etc.

so, uh...yeah. I need a musical re-education.
It's probably all of that "I have a music degree and burned myself out of music" thing.

EDIT: I am an idiot and forgot Dillinger Four - Civil War, Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between, and The Riot Before - Fists Buried In Pockets.

I finally went through my collection of 2008 releases and came up with a list. I had 9 of them that I gave highest ratings to, though. In alphabetical order, they are:

Evangelicals - The Evening descends
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive
Jay Reatard - Matador Singles '08
Love Is All - A Hundred Things That Keep Me Up At Night
The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride
Tapes 'n Tapes - Walk It Off
TV on the Radio - Dear Science
WHY? - Alopecia
Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer

If I had to pick a #1, it would be Alopecia by WHY?

There seems to be a lot of love for Heretic Pride but I just couldn't get into it. It was definitely better than Get Lonely, but it still never gets near the greatness of Tallahassee or The Sunset Tree.

Radiohead - In Rainbows
TV on the Radio - Dear Science
Portishead - Third

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Dig! Lazarus Dig!
Bloc Party - Intimacy
Sigur Ros - Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust

I'm sure nobody gives a shit but here's my Top 4 of '08 (in no particular order)

1. Thrice - The Alchemy Indexes III-IV
2. The Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath
3. Narrow Stairs - Death Cab for Cutie
4. Thrice - Live at The House of Blues (one of the most inspiring live albums I've ever heard)

That's it. Didn't really like anything else.

Was super-disappointed in The Killers' Day & Age, couldn't even bear to list it.

I was thinking I would have trouble narrowing it down to 5 when I realized that nearly every album I was thinking of was actually released in 2007. I think the only album I bought this year was:

Disturbed: Indestructible --great album

2007 was a great year of music for me: Modest Mouse, Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold, Chris Cornell to name a few. I guess I didn't listen to as much music this year.

Anyway, I saw a lot of people mention Metallica's new album. I haven't liked Metallica all that much since the 90s...is this album a lot different than their last few?

I thought the same at first, but upon repeat listens I have found a lot more in the album. There are a couple of tracks that I think are some of the best songs he has written so far. (Autoclave, San Bernadino, Lovecraft in Brooklyn) all come immediately to mind

Yes, definitely. There's also the fact that even a bad Mountain Goats album will still likely be better than most other releases in a given year. :)

Our Princess is in Another Castle (http://endhits.portlandmercury.com/archives/2008/09/08/mountain-goats-write-a-song-fo) made me anxious for more. I just looked on their site and it looks like there was an internet only EP (http://www.mountain-goats.com/archives/2008/10/four-new-songs.html) that came out in October. Not sure how I missed that one.

Pennywise - Reason to Believe

Furr - Blitzen Trapper
Dear Science - TV on the Radio
The Midnight Organ Fight - Frightened Rabbit
Visiter - The Dodos
The Seldom Seen Kid - Elbow
Fate - Dr. Dog
Mar Dulce - Bajofondo

Holy crap, thanks for that link, I had no idea about the "sorry Australia" stuff.

Satanic Messiah is good. I really wanted to get the Black Pear Tree album when I saw them in concert, but it was vinyl only and I'd have no way to listen to it. The songs with Kaki King live were absolutely incredible, though. Check here for them covering Suedehead. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRQOQY5i_uM)
