Do you ever watch classic Anime films and think to yourself, "You know, I'd love to see the whiny dude from Titanic make this into a live action movie," then this is your lucky day. Leo DiCaprio and WB are making Ninja Scrolls (and Akira) into a big budget live action movie. Ninja Scrolls is being written by Alex Tse, who penned the screenplay for Watchmen. But here's the money quote:Ninja Scroll is the second anime that DiCaprio is looking to turn into a live-action film, as (also with Warner Bros.) his Appian Way has acquired the rights to turn Otomo’s Akira into a live action feature, in which he does plan to star. DiCaprio producing Ninja Scrolls is fine - I know he want to be a big time producer in Hollywood - but starring in Akira? Great zombie Jesus, why? Firstly, for all of my mocking Leo is what 35? Akira was about teenagers and kids, where would he fit in?
But back to the matter at hand: Ninja Scrolls. Widely regarded as one of the greatest anime movies of all time. Ultra violent, gory, with a bit of nudity. And you can be assured that all of that will be stripped away by a live action production. Remember, to even think about making a movie like this, you need a huge budget, and therefore you almost always have to make the movie PG-13. So no excess gore, no sexy ninja women (or Nimbos = Ninja+bimbo) toned down violence. What does that leave us with? Maybe some cool fight scenes, but mostly a conspiracy theory about the politics of Feudal Japan.

DiCaprio has produced some good movies so I think I'll wait for trailer to judge so harshly ;).

Ninja Scroll. It's not multiple scrolls.
My reaction to this:

This won't end well.

Since Akira is his project, can we just assume he's taking Kaneda? He has the acting chops, I truly believe he does, but he's...ummm...not Asian. I guess I can live with it if the movie is great. The attitudes of the characters in Akira always struck me as more Western-oriented than most anime, if nothing else but for the setting. (Futuristic, punk kids in a gang, etc.)
However, under no circumstances are they allowed to make Jubei a non-Asian. I don't care what their angle is, just...NO.

I think the success of a mostly Asian cast in a Hollywood film may depend mostly on this upcoming ninja movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1186367/) produced by the Wachowskis and directed by the same guy who did V for Vendetta.

I'm pretty sure there won't be any lines in it about being just as happy to rape a corpse. Just speculating.
And what Lance said via pic.

Ah yeah, my reaction to the live action Akira movie was about the same as for the live action DBZ movie, which is complete horror. Not insulting DiCaprio here, but really, most of his best acting involves him being an angry Irish guy... hard to think of any of the Akira main chars being angry Irish guys...
On a side note, I remember rumbles a while back that they were making a full series out of Ninja Scroll, even saw a Japanese language trailer for it, anybody know what happened to that?

Some movies need not be remade into live action movies.. This is an example of one such movie.. I love the anime but there is no way this translates into a movie that will be successful.

That would be "Ninja Scrolls: The Series" and it is pretty pointless from what I understand.

That is certainly not good thing for "Asians"(you know,Asia does contain countries west of China).
Of course,l I speak with the fanboy scorn after they "fucked up" V for Vendetta.

The Wachowskis fuck everything up. The only reason The Matrix was so good is that they stole it. Makes the reason why the follow ups were such shit in comparison pretty clear.

Dude, it's been known that he was making Akira for a long, long time now. Personally, I'm curious to see what DiCaprio could do with the material, and as for him staring in it, lets not get our panties in a bunch until we even know what the hell that means.
As for Ninja Scroll... why people revere that movie so much is beyond me. Sure its fun in a campy, over the top sort of way, but if you look for anything other than violence, gore, and (lets be perfectly honest) rape, in your anime, it doesn't exactly have much to offer. So, fuck it, let DiCaprio do his worst. He's not going to be able to crank out anything more juvenile and ridiculous than what the movie already is.
