I used to eat things like Mc Donalds, Burger King, Sonic and KFC a lot. I stopped eating fast food for the most part several years ago with only occasional stops at a local Mexican food drive through for tacos.
Over the past few months I have tried Mc Donalds, Sonic and tonight KFC and they all sucked ass. I do not remember KFC being so greasy. I understand it is fried food but there is so much grease I can't eat it. Sonic was the same way and Mc Donalds just tasted like ass. Did I really enjoy this shit when I was eating it back then or have they changed? Especially KFC. Have they changed their recipe or cooking method over the last seven years or so? Anyone else have foods they used to enjoy that they just can't eat anymore?

They haven't changed anything, you've just become accustomed to real food.
I still enjoy KFC, though Abby's or Albertson's chicken is far, far better, and Carl's $6 burgers and fries still manage to be decent, but mostly I can't tolerate the fast majority of fast food, because it really is complete and utter crap.
A number of them I flat won't eat at period now because I've gotten sick from them. Burger King, Wendy's, and Taco Bell in particular.
McDonald's I've refused to eat at for years. Once ever 3 or 4 years I'll have a sausasge biscuit, but I usually regret it on account of those damn things are nothing more than slabs of lard and sodium.

I stopped eating fast food about 2 years ago. I've never been fat or anything, but the whole idea of fast food began to make me sick. I went to Europe, and lived with a family who ate real food almost every night, and I loved it. Coming home, I decided I would stop eating fast food. I broke the habit pretty quickly. For the first few months, I ate it once in a while, but every time I ate it, I got the runs. That's when I decided that I would never eat it again.I am an absolute fast food whore, I will eat any of it. And love it all.

Saying the runs is even worse than saying diarrhea. And the fact that you have given up fast food is impressive.

And really, why bother with fast food, when if you actually look around, you can usually find far better food from a local joint and often for surprisingly competitive prices.
Why buy Taco Bell, when there's about a zillion Mexican run taquerias and burrito shops where I can get far tastier, and more filling, food, for the same money or even less. Why go to Burger King or McDonalds or even Carl's when I can go to the local drive-in and get a bacon and cheese burger ground from locally raised beef for $4.50? Why buy Arby's roast beef, when there's a Russian deli that serves pastrami more tender and delicious than the best rare steak you've ever eaten for $5? Why go to Panda Express when the local Chinese place serves an amazing Chicken Curry lunch for $4.25?
It's just a matter of not settling for utter mediocrity, and having the cajones to try a few places to find the good local places. Yeah, you'll probably also find some serious dives in the process, but if you look around, try things out, read the local papers and talk to people, you can find some killer food without really spending much, if anything, more than you'd spend on crummy fast food.
And your body will love you for it. The difference it will make in your health eating real food instead of synthetic flavorants and processed waste products is worth it.

The price difference between the fast food and the alternative, is huge. Easily twice as much for the real food.

I wasn't making up those prices.
I can eat for the same price, or within a few bucks more or less, at local places, just about everywhere I've ever lived.
It really isn't that different. You just have to put in the effort to look.
I forgot to mention I do eat Chick-fil-A these days but I usually order a chargrilled chicken sandwich. I will also admit the mashed potatoes at KFC still rock. :)
I'm not particularly a health nut, In fact over the last year or so I have gotten back in the habit of grabbing a bag of chips out of the vending machine at work and skipping meals but apparently I still can't go back to fast food. The other habit I have gotten into is being lazy and eating frozen dinners. Mostly Lean Cuisine. I try to go with the less salt more fresh vegetable sort of frozen dinners but they can't be too good for me.
What I really wish is that I could eat sea food. That would open up a lot of restaurant options and it looks so good (crab and lobster meat). For what ever reason I have never been able to eat it. It is most likely an allergy because my body flat out rejects it. Not throwing up, my throat locks up as soon as it touches my mouth. To a point that I tried to eat some dip a while back that I had no idea had crab in it. As soon as it hit my mouth, I knew.

Depends on where you live.
When I lived in a bigger city, you can find tons of places like J Arcane mentioned that offer great food at REALLY cheap prices. Now that I'm living in a more suburb type area, those places simply don't exist.

Man, that sucks. As far as I know, I don't have any food allergies, I just have this damn acid problem, plus the ulcer, which has made eating rather difficult for me of late. I have to be super careful now about acids and spicy things, I can't drink alcohol, it's a big pain in the ass.
Still good with fish though, can't imagine living without it, I just can't afford it very often.

I also like Jimmy John's.

I can eat most fish, no shell fish though. I would much rather have my problem than yours. I can't imagine no spicy food. Have you gone to the doctor? I was in the emergency room two weeks ago because my ulcer was bleeding into my stomach. I was supposed to follow up with a gastroenterologist, but the guy they sent me to they weren't supposed to send me to, and then of course I got kicked out of my apt. so I haven't been able to get back in yet.
I'm going down tomorrow hopefully though, and apparently this town actually has better support for low/no-income patients than where I was before, it's just a matter of going in and figuring out what needs be done, and how the hell I'm gonna pay for it when there's quite literally no damn jobs in this town.

I got out of the fast Food habit a while ago as well. Now we mostly only eat food that we've made ourselves and no frozen meals. I had a conversation with a co-worker not too long ago, and she outright refused to believe I haven't had McDonalds in a few years.
"Oh, you probably did, you just don't remember it" she said. I'm pretty fucking sure I haven't, thank you very much. Not everyone depends on the chain's awful factory mulch as a cornerstone of their daily lard consumption.

That really sucks. I hope they get you in tomorrow. One good thing about doctor bills once you get in, they will bug the crap out of you but as long as you are making an effort they will work with you. At least it was that way years ago when I had some outstanding doctor bills. They still screwed up my credit for about 7 years though. I have avoided any kind of real debt my whole life. It's going to suck if I wind up getting stuck with a bunch of medical bills, in fact, it's something I've been terrified of ever since I was young because it's exactly what my mother went through. There's so many little problems that I should've had checked a long time ago but never felt I could afford to. I still think it's positively ridiculous that I live in what's supposed to be the most prosperous country in the world, but because of my profession and economic class, if I want medical care it means I get to look forward to a potential lifetime of debt hanging over my head.

I was forced to eat at Burger King two weeks ago. I hadn't been there in years - I took a bite or two and couldn't make myself eat any more, it was too disgusting. Since I've been in college I've all but stopped eating fast food. In a pinch I find that a Wendy's junior hamburger or a McDonald's snack wrap is *mostly* inoffensive, once a month or so.

I know we are derailing my own thread but I agree 100% with you. It's screwed up and seems to be getting worse. Even with a job and insurance I rarely go to the doctor. In fact, the little "remove the glass from my finger" surgery I had about 3 weeks ago was my first doctor visit in well over 5 years. Even with the insurance I am going to be out $1000 or more because of the deductible and percentage/items not covered by insurance. Health care in this country is broken. I take that back, the economic system in this country is broken badly right now.
I guess even more incentive to eat healthy. (...and back on topic :))

I stopped eating fast food a while ago when I wanted to lose some weight. I still eat it occasionally, but cut out the likes of McDonalds and Taco places.
Having said that, it still tastes so good when I do eat it once a year. I'm glad I have some resemblance of self control, otherwise I'd be big still. Stupid fat and calories!

I wasn't eating nuggets or strips so there was plenty of dark meat in the bucket. Which, come to think of it, I was eating food out of a cardboard bucket, that should have been the sign right there. Actually, fast food containers are nasty. Pizza comes in a cardboard box, burgers and sandwiches are wrapped in wax coated paper and chicken comes in a box or bucket, this can't be sanitary.

I'd eat the others begrudgingly and have the few dark ones as my special treat at the end. Now, they guarentee all white meat and I guarentee I wont buy your stupid food anymore.

On the overall topic of fast food eating. I find that I'll get sick off of it if I buy something that is really greasy (ie KFC original recipe) and haven't eaten it in a while. You really have to condition yourself to eat that crap.
There are some good places for fast food like Subway or Blimpie. You can get something decent there, but obviously it gets old eating subs and salads all the time.

You go without really greasy food for a month or two and it doesn't even taste good anymore. Ditto with really salty or sugary food. Your sense of taste will return and you will be able to taste more subtle flavors. You will actually be able to taste the sweetness in a lot of vegetables that previously tasted bland.
I have gone "on and off" with fast food for five years or so. Mostly "off," but every now and then I go through a stretch of a couple of weeks where I stop by places for breakfast or lunch but I still can't handle a lot of the really greasy stuff.

Sadly, you could say that about a lot of things in this day and age. Fortunately, I live in an area that is still...shall we say, rustic enough where you can see the fields that just grew the food your about to buy at the farmer's market and where some of the older folks are more than happy to share some advice on making your own root beer and the like. Mind you, this does come at the expense of certain luxuries like - until only recently - getting anything faster than dial-up. :D
As a sidenote, though, I still do enjoy a fair bit of regular soda, and I've been dying for a Croissanwich...

Nanado's. Greatest fast food ever. Grilled chicken with a selection of sauces ranginging from mild to extra hot. It's a South African chain with a portugese theme, but I don't think there is one in America. Sucks to be you, bitches!
We have a few of those here in BC. I don't think I've ever seen them in Toronto when I still lived there, though.
I guess they must have different quality control over the food in Pakistan because every time I've had chicken from there, it tasted dry and rubbery :(
Wayyy too overcooked. I can see the spices and seasoning being awesome if only it was cooked properly, though.

People should eat whatever they want, and then should be dropped from my insurance pool for risky behavior, so that my monthly rate goes down and they pay their own way.
Now excuse me while I go back to my cup of coffee. :D

I think we need a Culvers-In N Out taste off. Both are awesome.

I went to California this summer and what's the big deal about In-N-Out?
Was very disappointed after all the hype.
I think it's really the total package of In-N-Out that makes it so popular. It's basically a 50's style burger joint turned into fast food, so it's got a hip atmosphere about the place. They privately own all the companies that provide their meat and produce, so it's guarenteed fresh. The stores are usually open until 1-2am, a rarity for fast food in my area. They're famous for paying their employees well, so you always get great survice and they never mess up orders. They'll also modify your order in whatever way you can think of, so people tend to have their own unique combinations that they love. My ex was a vegetarian, so she'd order "grilled cheese" and get a burger without meat. You can make the size of your burgers and ask for 4 by 4s or 6 by 6s. I've seen football teams order 100 by 100s for pre game meals, which is basically a 100 patty burger.
It isn't that In-N-Out is the best burger joint in the world, it's not. It's the fact that they're a fast food joint that can still cook everything fresh to order using healthy ingredients that makes it so popular. If your looking for a quick burger, In-N-Outs are your best choice here in Cali.
