Gears 3 is still a ways off, but Epic has started rolling out tempting details about what we can expect from their Third Installment in the fight against the Locust. A big preview is slated for the June Edition of Game Informer magazine, but some of those juicy details have started coming to light.
Co-Op is getting fleshed out for four(4) players: Dom and Marcus will be joined by Anya Stroud and Jace Stratton, the latter being a new addition to the story. Together we join them a year and a half after the Fall of Jacinto, where survivors are continuing the fight long after the collapse of the government.
They face new enemies among the Lambent, the name for Locust that have mutated after exposure to Imulsion. Among them are Drudges, which answer to cover-seeking Gears by throwing out tendril-like limbs in their attack. Near death, they'll go kamikaze and try to blow you up, Ticker-style.
Fortunately, you'll be packing new heat, as well. Modified Lancers, sawed off shotguns, and a curious "Digger Launcher", which can only be described as some kind of Poodle-Gun that hurls burrowing piranha-like creatures that seek out their targets underground. The Silverback mechanized suit can be worn with heavy weapons, or it can be converted into cover on the battlefield.
Also, according to the new Game Informer article, there will be new modes to play with a new "Arcade Mode" where you can tweak the game settings to change things up and make a bid against your friends in various challenges for bragging rights.
Two of the multiplayer maps have been revealed, a wrecked thrashball field, and fight on the sinking ruins of Jacinto. There's also talk of varying environment, like tides of Imulsion that rise and fall mid-fight.
"Hey sweetheart, whatcha got in that Poodle Gun? Anything for me?" - Die Fledermaus
Gears of War 3 is slated for release on April, 2011.
