Ignition Entertainment (Japan) pulled the curtains on their newest game. (Andriasang (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/05/13/el_shaddai_detailed/))

The main character in El Shaddai is a white-clad, blonde-haired young man named Enoch. Although human, the gods have summoned him up to heaven where he serves as a clerk.

The story begins long in the past as God commands the angels to watch over the world below. The angels carry out their duties for a long time, but some become filled with admiration for man and commit the great sin of descending to the ground below.

The heavens become filled with anger, and a plan is hatched to wipe out the world below with a great flood. Enoch steps in and convinces the angels to hold off on their plan if he goes about capturing the fallen angels. This serves as the start of Enoch's great journey.

Enoch will be joined in his quest to pursue fallen angels by Lucifer, a red-eyed angel with power so great that he can freely travel through time. He looks out on the world as protector. Under the orders of God, he works with other guardian angels to support Enoch. Lucifer is very cooperative, as it seems he's taken a personal liking to Enoch.

Playing as Enoch, you'll enter a large "living world." The game's stages of play promise variety, from common stage elements like platforms that can be jumped between to more uncommon gimmicks. Players will have to match their movements with stage formations and situations of great variety.

I doubt they would show it at E3 without a NA release planned.

I mean more of the whole fact you're sent to find and fallen angels, with the help of Lucifer. Now, I'm all for interesting retellings of religions (even my own) but most people are not. Once religious groups get wind of this, it'll spread through fox news like wildfire 'Play as Satan in new Video Game!'

Maybe this will see a stateside release, but when you start getting into heavy religious themes, and even incorporate Lucifer (Even in name only) as a main character on the GOOD side, then things start to get muddy.

However, because it's still from Japan, but they're too lazy to actually learn the language they claim to be so in love with, they'll buy the damn game anyway, or import it and spend hours trying to to play the game using scripts they downloaded off GameFAQs.

It depends on the translators - remember Atlus and the cut persona from Persona 3? When they released FES (and AFAIK, in Portable) they brought it back.

If we get a good translator (Atlus, maybe XSEED) the NA version (if one happens) should be pretty faithful.

I'm actually hoping it does get a NA release...It reminds me of a story I was once working on about re-telling Lucifer's fall from heaven, and painting him in more of a martyr light that anything else.

I was about to pass out and had the idea that their really hasn't been a neat telling of the story of Lucifer's fall from heaven...I even storyboarded a few scenes on my whiteboard...

Christ sometimes i wonder if I just read this thread..

wtf, well this saves me the trouble of bothering I can just get this game.

It's amusing sometimes to look into apocryphal texts and the mythology that surrounds them. Enoch and his ascension to the highest rank of angels is one of the more interesting ones, in my opinion.


As for the game, it has a very interesting art style. I'm curious how it will play out.

Remember Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne? The premise of that game was that after the destruction of the world, you are given the power by Lucifer to decide how the world would be reborn. One of the options was to side with him, destroy the world before it could be reborn, and go from world to world destroying each one in turn.

Ignition Entertainment Japan is licensing NaturalMotion's Morpheme middleware for El Shaddai's animation work. (Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/28803/Ignition_Licenses_Morpheme_For_El_Shaddai.php))

NaturalMotion's Morpheme aims to allow users to "author and preview blends, blend trees, and transition graphs" in real time. The middleware is available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, and iPhone.

Ignition says it considered several options before choosing its animation tools, and believes that Morpheme will allow its animators to "deliver the high quality of performance that this project demands"....

You’re taking a very interesting artistic direction with El Shaddai. Where was this watercolor-style inspiration conceived?

El Shaddai’s unique visual style springs directly from the imagination of its Director, Mr. Sawaki Takeyasu. Prior to joining the El Shaddai team, Takeyasu had previously been the art director for Capcom’s Okami and Devil May Cry, but for this game, Ignition Entertainment has given him absolute creative freedom, and we are ecstatic about the compelling artistic vision he has created for El Shaddai’s world and characters. He wanted to create something that would be difficult to describe without seeing it, a new look for games that would leave a lasting impact on players.

What do you hope to achieve in developing El Shaddai?

We’re hoping to achieve many different things with this game. First off, El Shaddai is meant to be a fairly disruptive title for the character-action genre, as it looks and feels different than many of the other “hack ‘n’ slash” games available. We also want to empower our core creative team in Japan to break beyond traditional game design barriers that may have held them back in the past, all while drawing from the immensely deep (and largely unexplored) well of story lines and characters offered by the ages-old source material. And fundamentally, we want to forge a rewarding, surprising, and profoundly engaging piece of interactive art that stands the test of time and makes many, many players happy. That’s the big goal.

At the moment we’ve seen many beautiful environments that look like something out of a fantasy art book. Will we see any modern environments in the game?

So far, only a small amount of El Shaddai’s environments have been showcased, and bear in mind that everything that’s been revealed is still far from being finished. We don’t want to give away too much at this early stage of development, but rest assured that you’ll see a wide variety of locations, with some that are more ethereal and abstract, while others might be a bit more substantial and concrete.

Famitsu (http://www.famitsu.com/news/201009/14033178.html) worked their magic and was able to obtain early access to the TGS 2010 demo from Ignition. Andriasang (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/09/15/el_shaddai_spring_release/) provides details from their article.

This has been reported in past previews, but the game's control system is meant to be simple. Outside of movement with the analogue stick, you have three buttons: attack, jump and guard. Famitsu reports that despite the simplicity, you can still do quite a bit in terms of timing-based combos. The game also has charge-based attacks where you have to hold down on the attack button.

Enoch has access to three attack methods in the demo: his bare hands, a shield-like weapon (I'm not sure of the English name) and his "arch" sword. The shield weapon is an item that was left on the earth by fallen angels. It's equipped on both hands and can serve as both an attack method and as a shield capable of deflecting enemy bullets.

There's more to the demo than just combat. The demo offers players a chance to try out a number of small sequences from different stages. Some passages make use of the platforming elements as you move Enoch around and jump between platforms.

Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6181/secrets_of_the_apocrypha_el_.php) has an interview with Director Takeyasu Sawaki, in which he talks about the storyline, and the differences with working with non-japanese staff (communication, working on the game, etc.).

How did you actually arrive at using this backdrop of mythology, the Christian Apocrypha, that is the basis for the story?

TS: Well, our company's headquarters is in the UK, and one person in UK who used to work for UK office brought this idea to me, and I wanted to make a game related to this kind of religious theme. The theme was basically given to me.

I don't know if you've been to or heard of GDC. It's like CEDEC. You know, Game Developers Conference. You have CEDEC here. Those kinds of things are much more common, and people in America share information very freely. I think that would probably help a lot in Japan, but I get the impression it's not so common.

TS: I think Japanese people are kind of shy, so we don't really tend to share all the information, compared to American people.

I was surprised when I realized that, because this company has given me a lot of experience working with people from other countries, I'm more able to communicate with people at other companies.

And I think, for example, Americans, or English people, are very straightforward, and they insist their opinions as much as they can. I think that's very different from the Japanese.

Yeah, the demo really isn't that representative for it either. I getting thrown from cute rainbow style platforming to transforming mech battles on motorbikes to a enemy who goes all YMCA on my ass on a dancing stage. It's varied as hell and even unexpectedly epic times (the fire nephilim was amazing).
