Thanks! Seems like the servers are getting hammered right now, though- it might be necessary to wait a while before downloading.

Haha! Suckers. I would have paid money for that game. I was waiting for it to go on sale, but this is good too.

Is this like a "it's free until X date, then the game gets locked and you have to pay for it" or free as in "you download it, it's yours forever" free?

I think it's free till the 24th... then you're locked out.

No, its free up until the 24th, where it will be a "pay to add to your account" game again. If you add it to your account now, it is permanently added to your account.

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused by this!

I added it to my account then started to install it, once it got to 3% done I decided to delete it to see if it would stay in my games list, which it didn't do. I have a feeling it's free to play and not free to own.
But I'll delete it again once it's done downloading to see if it sticks this time.
Update: It disappeared from my list after fully downloading it. I guess I'll redownload it and see what happens after the 24th.
Update 2: Now its on my list... weird O_o

I've got the Orange Box on 360 but it seems like a reasonable excuse to install something on my Mac.

It's crazy to me that there are people who still haven't played Portal.
If you're one of those people, you are completely out of excuses.
As for the "free for now or free forever?" question, the wording on their page about it leads me to believe that as long as you get it now, it'll stay in your account permanently:
So you only have a few days to decide if your free copy of Portal is worth the price we're currently charging - which is you ever-so-slightly moving your index finger just barely enough to click the big red "download" button right there to the left.

I pretty sure I told someone recently to hold out on buying it because I figured it'd get a sale in the lead up to Portal 2. Hope they took my advice.
It's a pretty good plan to get people to install Steam on their mac.
Also this made me laugh heartily: "Capital news! But the excellent puzzle adventure Portal won over 40 Game of the Year awards; Surely it must cost at least five or six hundred dollars."

It is FREE TO OWN. If you download before the 24th, you own it, that's that. The goofiness with the disappearing/reappearing games is due to Steam being overloaded because of new Mac users and the free Portal downloads. Took me a while to download Portal on my Mac.

you probably have your list on a custom thing to show only installed games or something like that, at the top select ALL games and you will see it greyed out if it is not installed.

Where's Duke saying how horrible this is because it is just 1 game? :p

No all of my games were showing because I only have one installed, otherwise my list would have been a lot shorter. Like someone else mentioned it was probably just a mess up since the servers were so busy.

Fun game with a delightful personality, but considering it took me less than two hours to reach the finish line, I'm kind of glad I waited until it was free.
Now I just need to hunt down a copy of HL2 Episode 2, and my Orange Box experience will be complete.
