We've known (http://www.edge-online.com/news/latest-left-4-dead-demo-details) for some time now that Valve is planning on releasing a demo for Left 4 Dead, but now it seems that Gamestop has revealed the details. According to Gamestop's website (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=65253), customers who pre-ordered L4D will gain early access to the demo from November 6 until November 11, when presumably the rest of us will gain access. This notice appears for both the Xbox 360 (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=65253) and PC (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=65231) listings on Gamestop.com.
The demo features the first two levels from the No Mercy campaign, in which the survivors must make their way through Mercy Hospital to a rescue helicopter on the roof of the building. Survivors eager to fight the undead online need not worry, the demo will include online four player co-op, but would-be zombies will have to wait until the full release to try the infected side.
Valve has yet to confirm the arrangement with Gamestop, but we shouldn't have to wait much longer. Valve VP of Marketing, Doug Lombardi, has promised (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/55363) that Valve will officially announce the demo details before Halloween.

No demo needed, got this pre-bought on Steam already. Think I won't even try the demo and just wait to play the full game, I got tons to keep me busy till then anyways.

I'm waiting until Valve makes an announcement before I pre-order this. If steam pre-orders get early access too, I'd rather go that route, but I will go through gamestop if it means an additional week of zombie blasting.
If it means not having to pre-order from Gamestop, I can easily wait the extra five days to kill the undead. They're obviously not going anywhere.

I'm looking forward to the demo, but there's no way I'm going to pre-order (let alone go to Gamestop) to get it early.

If they were to give the early access to Steam pre-orders, then I'd get it through that.

Same here, I pre-ordered from Gamestop so I'll probably wait till the game arrives to play it.
I mean, Valve made it, it has zero chance of sucking.

I don't get the logic behind this move.
They're releasing the demo early to people who pre-ordered? Basically the people who basically guaranteed a sale with their pre-order? Isn't the demo supposed to convince people to either buy it or at least... well... pre-order?

Steam pre-orders should get the demo early, jerks.

Um, wouldn't that be known as an incentive to pre-order then?

The gamestop announcement doesn't say that it's exclusive early access. I'll bet that Steam pre-orders will get the demo early too.

Incentive to pre-order to basically guarantee a sale in order to try a demo to see if they'd like it or decide to cancel the pre-order?
That may work for a few people but to my mind that wouldn't affect a significant enough of the market to really make a difference, especially when people know all they need to do is wait an extra week to play the demo.
So everyone's just like poo? Fuck that! I think this is GREAT news!
I mean, I was plannin' on getting it anyway. This just means that I'll get to check it out a little earlier. Yay!!
Looks like I may have spoken too soon. This looks like it's just going to be an access code, to (I guess) download the demo. Eff that! I was hopin' that it might be like an actual demo disc.
Not cool, yo.
Wow, what a stupid move. Isn't the idea of a demo to get the fence sitters to bite? Offering a demo to the people that have already pre-ordered is like preaching to the choir.
This game, as awesome as it looks can now wait til after Christmas for me when the sales hit and the drought begins. Smart move Valve.
Damn I'm in a mean mood this morning what with this and the MK edits

The demo is still going to be available to those who don't pre-purchase. It just comes out a few days later. If you haven't already pre-purchased this one then the few extra days won't make or break your decision.

I don't get why this is a big deal at all. We all get the demo on Nov. 11, six days before the release of the game. Is six days not enough time for you to make a decision?

Agreed here. What the heck? Complain up and down that second hand sales are as horrible as piracy... but every week or so we see "Gamestop exclusive!!!"
Seems a bit off, I don't even have a good analogy for it really. Not so much buisness sense in "Hey, these guys are making boatloads of dough off our stuff.. and not giving us a cut. I know. Let's give them extra exclusives so people buy there more!

I don't think I've ever heard Valve complain about the used game market. Most of their sales are on PC (Bonus points: they don't complain about piracy either), and Steam cuts off a lot of the used game market.
All the freeloaders and undecideds are still going to get to try the game at least a week before release; they just happen to be giving their customers a special treat as a "thank you." No reason to cry foul.

True, I guess I'm just over-reacting. Lack of sleep and too much assignment work makes Yeti a grumpy boy.
And who am I kidding, this game is a must have, damn Valve and their making good games philosophy!!:)

Simplistic logical question.
Why would you need to demo early if you pre-ordered and will own the whole thing?
Only benefit I see is the ability to cancel the order?

Because we'd want to play the game early?

How many times have people said that a demo is not representative of the full game, though?

Valve has said that the demo is simply one of the maps from one of the campaigns. So basically it is early access to the game.
I like Valve. I was undecided about pre-ordering on Steam (what with being poor this month and all that), but now I just have to. Dammit Valve! You with your perfect games and great download-service for hermits like me. :|
