View Full Version : No Video - Dead MoBo?

I came home today to a looong distorted beep instead of my usual single beep at post. It almost sounds like just one long beep, but apparently that is not a correct code for my MoBo (Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P). The monitor never receives signal. The beep breaks up a little bit towards the end so it may be the 1 long 2 short code for video card not seated correctly (a gigabyte HD 4650). I reseated the video card then rebooted and got a similar code, tried booting without the card (same code), tried booting without anything but the power plugged in (same beep). I'm guessing the MoBo is not working properly, but it could still be the videocard. I don't have access to another card (unless I want to go buy one for 50 bucks). Any suggestions?

Usually a harsh beep like that means the cpu fan isnt spinning, something like that, but odd no video

First step, check the ram, sata cables, etc. Then I would say take the mobo battery out, reset cmos, wait a minute, replace battery and try to boot, if you still get nadda, then call gigabyte.

If it is the mobo, I would be intrigued to hear how support goes, as I have a GB mobo. If you want to test it is a video issue, you can always enable the chipset video and try that as well.

Thanks for the advice. The CPU fan was working, as well as the videocard fan. I came home a few hours later and it restarted just fine. So now I am very confused. A friend of mine suggested that the CMOS battery might be the problem and that it may not be charging properly - and that this would explain the extra long strange sounding beep. This also explain the very long wait times between the start button being pressed and the normal post beep. If I continue to get weirdness from this machine then I will definitely check the CMOS battery and reset the bios as you suggest.

Yep, It likely can be, usually the PC won't boot or has issues doing so, never heard of one beeping before. Easiest to just start from a and go to z and make things more difficult to narrow the farther you go down the list.

Report back.

A new wrinkle has surfaced. The num lock key stays lit after I power the computer down. Not just for a few seconds - it will stay lit until I flip the power switch on the back of the Power supply, and the light comes right back as soon as I flip the switch on the back of the power supply again. SO now my thinking is that either the power supply is faulty or the MoBo is. I am way past newegg's return policy, but I better not be out of the warranty on my gigabyte motherboard.

Power supply wouldnt/shouldnt be causing that. perhaps its the mobo not telling the usb to shut off, not grounded properly, something like that. Give gigabyte an email/call, definitely swap it out.

An update: I finally gave up trying to figure out what strangeness was occurring with the MoBo, and borrowed another graphics card and tried it out. My problem disappeared. Apparently it was the graphics card all along (or else there's something even weirder happening). I sent in the RMA request. We'll see what happens.
