View Full Version : Spiderman: Web of shadows
So, any one picked it up? is it any good? i haven't really heard anything about it, other then seeing a couple of trailers.
I'm curious but with everything else coming out there's no way I'm going to get to this until it's dirt cheap. Still interested in hearing people's opinions on it. Maybe my friend who's a huge comic book junkie will pick it up and I can play his.
It's not as bad as the reviews had me expecting. The intro sequence, where you're fighting on the side of a building, is pretty bad, but once you get past that and into the actual game it's pretty fun. It really picks up when you start learning air combos and how to string together attacks.
The webslinging is a blast - right up there with Spider-man 2. You get good air control, and the webs generally seem to attach to buildings (you can't sling a web while too high, for example) though sometimes you just know they aren't - and adjusting the camera will show that to be the case.
Some downers though - terrible voice work. The Spider-man voice "talent" in particular. A lock-on camera system that occasionally makes the camera freak out for no reason, but never in combat. It'll happen when you climb the side of a building, leaving the camera pointing straight down or straight up and unable to be manipulated. Getting it unstuck takes tapping the left trigger, or sometimes jumping and tapping it works. It's annoying, but at least you won't die while trying to work it out.
You can switch between red-and-blue and black-suit Spider-man at any time, just by clicking in the left thumbstick. The system works pretty well, letting you mix up your combinations (each suit gets their own, and their own upgrade system to add new attacks as well) by shifting suits mid-combo. It's easy to accidentally click over to the other suit though, which can cause issues. There are bat-wielding enemies that, at least early on, the black-suit version has a far easier time with - so changing into the red and blues at the wrong time gets you swatted.
All in all, a few hours in, I'd say it's worth a rental. There's some funny stuff here for comic book fans, the back-and-forth with Luke Cage about his days as Power Man made me snicker.

Potentially off-topic, but the DS version is very, very solid, and is probably the best Spidey game on the DS so far. Which is saying something, since Spidey 3 was also very good on the DS.
The fighting combos for both red and black suited Spidey are intricate and look fantastic, and once you get your character leveled up (which is arguably too easy since the enemies respawn infinitely when you re-enter rooms, and they still drop XP) you can pull off some amazing moves. Web a guy, uppercut him into the air, leap up, hit him a few times, kick him away, web him back in, and then slam him down into his friends, that sort of thing. Anybody who played Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night on the GBA, the same guys designed the fighting system for that... that game was labeled "Spyro May Cry" by several reviewers because of how fluid and fun the combat was, and this is a worthy successor IMO.
Only caveat would be that most reviews have said the DS game is very short, beatable in 4 hours or so. I'm only 30% through the game according to my gamesave having put in about 3 hours, but I'm front-loading the leveling up quite a bit because the combat is fun enough not to feel like "grinding", so your mileage may vary. Still, it's a really solid action game, probably the most fun I've had whacking guys on the DS since Ninja Gaiden. This + Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia = one pretty kickass week for the DS. :D

According to the commercial on comedy central that they air every commercial break, it is THE MOST anticipated game of the year. Forget about Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Far Cry 2. Give me Web of Shadows. Give me a break is more like it.

This game looks pretty good, but it's just at a really bad time right now.
I mean, Fallout 3, Fable 2, Saint's Row 2, Far Cry 2, and so many others, this one will just have to wait.

Yep, this is a game I may have grabbed if it was released in, say, June.

Ah quit your moaning. Just about every advert I see for a game, movie or album has this in the advert somewhere. And as to paraphrase the Republic Party "It's advertising, everyone lies".

That doesn't make it any less shitty.

I saw that too and laughed. Who, with the exception of Hardcore gamers and comic book nerds, knew this game was coming out? People at least know that Gears of War 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour are coming.

I played this for you over the weekend.
And I need to thank you for recommending me to do so. Fun game. Has some issues, but much better than I thought it would be. So far anyway.

Wow. So it is OK to lie? It was still funny to hear. Because without the commercial, I didn't even know it was coming out. But even so, I don't care. A crappy commercial for a crappy game. And no, not every game, movie, or album claims to be the best of the year. Maybe in your world. Enjoy the best game of the year. Ha ha.
To even talk shit, you need to have paid full price for the game and loved every second of it fanboy. So did you?

Well hooray then! I'll look forward to checking out the Wii version when it arrives. I assume you were on 360 for it?

Mmmmmmm, delicious achievements. Steam needs more o' them things so we PC gamers can get hopelessly addicted to collecting them as well. ;)

I played some more last night and finished up Act 1. I've never been good with the upgrade powers thing. I'm always careful about what I spend my XP on and it's always tough to make choices on what new abilities I want.
Also, something else. For the last part of Act 1, you have to use a certain technique to take out the baddies. Luckily, the technique is pretty easy, but if they do this throughout the game, I'm going to have trouble. Some of the moves (wrecking ball, for instance) I just can't get right. In the tutorial for it, sure, but actually using it just never works for me.

I have always been a fan of Spiderman games, I even had some fun with Spiderman 3. This is just a shit time of year to release it though, should have waited until early next year. Definitely something I will be looking to play early next year, hopefully after a price drop or two.

It's a lot more fun than I was expecting. It isn't the greatest looking game out there (although Spidey, himself, looks the best I think I've ever seen him in a game), but it sure is fun.
