I know this project comes up frequently, but they just released a new teaser video and it's a must watch.

Whoa, absolutely amazing the scale of what they're trying to accomplish.

Impressive
I wonder if they can populate their world with meaningful content though. Worlds that are huge just for the sake of being huge tend to bring games down

lol give the guy a break, if i remember right it started out as a one dude project and from the first videos it's come a looooooooooooooooooooong way. Purely for what it could do as a proprietary engine it's amazing. I mean ya converting that tech in to something with meaningful gameplay is going to be hard, just look at spore. But right now it's the engine worth getting excited about, if they can add cites and walking around outside of ships they will have the tools to do something epic

I'll be in my bunk.
Seriously, if the video is streaming slowly for you, it's because I'm doing obscene things to it.

Has anyone tried the downloadable demo? (http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=23&Itemid=51) I'm at work and really want to try it.

Well, that was pretty. Now we just need it to get released and I'll vanish for a few months.

That's really neat but the scale seems to be quite off. The ship seems way too big and that it goes way too fast, although the quickness isn't that big of an issue.

actually if you look at the shadows and stuff you'll realise some of its scale problems are just a trick of the perspective because we've got nothing we can judge size of the ship against it feels a lot bigger than it really is. Also given the size of the thing the speed makes sense in just a tech demo to show it off.

Fantastico!
But damn do I wish this was closer to release :D
Isn't Jumpgate Evolution out yet? I keep trying to nail down a copy but it's "released" but not available anywhere. Everything about it says rocky release and to wait a few weeks before picking it up. (Edit: Seeing different dates everywhere... who knows. Definitely not yet or even soon it seems.)

The fact that the capital ship is like, what, 10 kilometers long? My god, if they get this game to work Mrs Squid may divorce me.

 If they state that all of those are playable. Day one purchase. Fuckit, I'll throw some money at them from a car on a drive by tomorrow.

Well, I downloaded the combat prototype and it just plain does not work with recent ATI drivers.

That sucks, I played for about 2 hours last night and it's kind of fun though it is very basic and is definitely pre-beta. It wouldn't hold up at all as an actual game yet but the potential is pretty awesome.
I just hope one of these space-sim games (this, Black-Prophecy or Jumpgate Evolution) makes it out before I turn 40... in 9 years. ;)

I'd settle for something simple like Naumachia, (http://naumachia.aureasection.com/) but these damn space games just never seem to come out.

Just had a quick blast on the prototype. Quite nice.

God, I hope they get this right.
I've been dreaming of a fluid, all-fronts space sim like this since I was a child, and every time I've been let down. Battlecruiser is fuck awful, Earth and Beyond died before I could play it, SWG is fuck awful, Venture the Void was cool but way too small and the developer seems to have abandoned it.
Give me real space exploration!

Frontier: Elite II?

Frontier: Elite II?
Honestly I never played it, I only learned of the Elite series later.
I didn't realize Frontier had expanded into planetary surfaces. It looks very impressive given its release date.

Just the thought of that game still blows my mind. I mean, a lot of it is pretty primitive by today's standards, and yet there was a fully navigable universe with hundreds of fully modeled 3D star systems, each planet housing its own space ports and traffic... and the entire thing fit on a single 1.44meg floppy disk.
As far as I'm concerned, it's one of the great achievements in video-gaming, if only for the sheer audacity of the design and expanse of the game world. Playing it back in '94 changed my perception of what was possible in virtual worlds, and gave me some very unrealistic expectations for the next decade.
Just to give you a sense of the game's scale, here's the map included in the box:

Edit: I'll also toss out a strong recommendation for I-War 2: Edge of Chaos. Sometimes at night, I weep that Particle Systems didn't make another.

It's all about the procedural generation systems. That's why Spore does it so well too. If only there was more to it, and not so many annoyances and interruptions to the sandbox in space mode.

I wonder if this Infinity will ever be completed. The video is quite impressive, but seems such a daunting task for a sole developer, and it's been years in the making.
I hope he makes it tough

I was reminded of this recently, and went and downloaded the demo, which I intend to try in the morning, however, as a result of re-reading this thread, I've also come across this awesome thing here: http://tom.noflag.org.uk/glfrontier.html
Someone has actually done a modern OpenGL port of Frontier: Elite II. MUST PLAY NOW.

Well, I can't seem to get the techdemo to work. But that GLFrontier runs great.
I also found high-res ports of Frontier: First Encounters: http://www.frontierastro.co.uk/Hires/hiresffe.html

That tech demo is amazing. It's a shame we probably won't see this released for a long time to come.

Now this....this looks like it will be a lot of fun...to fill this up with content would take a damned life time.

This looks amazing. To make a sandbox universe it would need to be procedural for sure. It would be so cool to have planets created, species evolved and traits inherited generated everytime you start a new game. I don't even need a story, give me mount & blade + spore on that engine and I would go nutty.
