View Full Version : iTunes takes 9 minutes to start

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
Yesterday, iTunes just randomly decided to break and start taking 10 minutes to start up. I don't remember making any changes to my computer. I've tried removing all traces of iTunes from my computer, including the preference folders from AppData. I also cleared any registry keys associated with iTunes. Then I reinstalled, and had the same problem.
I created a new user account, and iTunes works fine on that.
Help?

Get Media Monkey

I know a lot of people are just going to recommend using different software, but I'm one of those people that likes using the "default" programs. I'll feel weird using anything but iTunes with my iPod.

Sorry charlie. Then you are stuck using the POS that Apple writes for you.
I find it downright laughable that Apple has the moxie to blame Adobe for writing poor software as they continue to foist iTunes and QuickTime on the world.
MediaMonkey is the aspirin.
Ditching Apple is the cure.

maybe try run as admin, might be some wierd thing where it isn't getting access to the ram or something quick enough because it has to wait for windows to allow it.

The thing is, it worked fine before, and then suddenly just started acting stupid. This is the first time iTunes has ever had a problem with me.

Does MediaMonkey have decent iPhone 3GS support?
I hate iTunes, but last time I looked, I couldn't find any good alternative for syncing. I'm using "iTunes Lite" (you can also get around installing Quicktime) which you can learn how to set up from here (http://www.msfn.org/board/itunes-lite-guide-t137702.html). It's still iTunes, and thus it still sucks, but I haven't had any earth shattering issues like what you've described. Might be worth a try...

Problem solved. It just randomly started working again.

Based on what you were stating, I'd say the problem was somehow tied to your Windows Profile and a setting you may have had.
Out of curiosity, do you know what the cause was?

Actually, IIRC mediamonkey synced with the iphone if the itunes service is running in the background.

Shouldn't hurt to try though.

Being a firm supporter of Apple products for many years now, all I can think is that there is some problem with your previous account? Perhaps the e-mail address or the connection between them. In this case I don't think it was iTunes fault (although I'm completely biased) But something to do with the e-mail itself. Or the card account (if there was one) In that case... It will probably just fix itself naturally.

Trying with another user account is definitely viable troubleshooting. If you were using a mac, the fact that iTunes starts fine for other user accounts would indicate that the problem is in the iTunes preferences file for your user account.
However, you're not using a Mac. I'm guesing the Windows version probably mimics the preference file format of the Mac version somehow. I'll look into that when I can here at work today, but in the meantime you may wanna try some poking around online so see how the Windows version of iTunes handles user preferences.
It could also be a bad iTunes library database. You could always delete the XML file for the iTunes library and have iTunes re-scan your folders, though this can sometimes not go as well as one would like.
EDIT: Apple's iTunes Support Document (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717) Since you already determined other user accounts work well - click on the "User-Specific Troubleshooting" section.

Media Monkey downloaded, installed and fully configured. I has a new media player!
Oh, and Apple software generally sucks, but that's a conversation for another thread and another time.

Stop using iTunes.
No. It's the only app that syncs my music, photos, calendars, contacts, movies, podcasts, books and applications with my iPad and iPhone.

iTunes blows. I hate it. I don't update my iPod that often, so anytime I start it I have to go through several updates... then it takes forever to resync my music... argh... worst software...

Yet another reason not to buy the products.
Thread derail go!

It was a happy day when I decided to uninstall ITunes and grab MediaMonkey to use with the Ipod. It was a good day, followed by many other good days.

Well, I can only solve so many of your problems at once. ;)

Music and photos can be done with other applications, but Tayaya is correct, itunes is required for iphone users. That is why its on my secondary Os on my secondary computer.

Wow, the things you don't know about a person.
I have a first gen shuffle (got it for free) that I use at work. I just use WinAmp's plugin to transfer music around. Even transcodes FLAC and OGG on the fly so I don't have to screw about with CDex.

I rarely update itunes software. I always decline it. Since everytime you update it, it ends up cocking something up.
I usually update my iphone when the slew of people they clusterfuck with an update finally get the issues solved.

Itunes on Mac is like slight less integrated version WMP12 on Win7. So we are talking about different thing.

To be fair, Apple software is generally exceptional.... on a Mac. :) iTunes kinda sucks on both platforms, but it's nothing short of broken on Windows.
