It can be found for much cheaper and upkeep costs a fraction in accessories like blades and cream :).

3 blade or 5 blade? I wonder if 5 blades would destroy my face even more than 3 or if it would help. Can you buy the 5 blade and if it doesn't work out use 3 blade refills?

Yeah I saw the commercial on TV the other day. I still get moderate shaving irritation on my neck, even after trying just about every combination of shaver/cream on the market, so I might actually check this out.

What are you using for a shaving cream / soap, fits? I've been using Cremo Cream (http://cremocream.com/) for awhile now and really liking it, but I don't know how it would play with a cartridge razor (I'm using a safety razor, though not one nearly as pricey at the one CappinCanuck linked - yikes!).

I once used a schick razor. By the end of it, it had hair stuck in it everywhere...from the first shave. Piece of shit.

My ancestry is from the same isles as Fitbabits' fathers. I can attest to having really sensitive skin. I also need to shave every day I am at work, though.
Here is how I do it, and it really helps.
Get a quality shave gel. Try something without soap - they're expensive but they cause me a lot less irritation. When I switched from a cheap brand to a nice one, my throat bumps and red skin almost disappeared.
Use sharp razors - a lot of people try to get too much mileage out of a razor. Dull razors scrape too much and will cause a lot of irritation. If you have a really heavy beard, you will need to replace your razor more often.
The technique: Use long, slow strokes with firm pressure. I shave up but I do realize that shaving down is less likely to irritate your skin. Rinse the razor after every stroke. Don't use short, "chopping" strokes - the looooong stroke is where it's at, especially with multi-bladed razors.
Rinse or wash your face right away and use cold water to close your pores up.
Once I started doing all this, my facial irritation went away quite a bit.

I use Hot Water and quick strokes, like I'm painting my face with a roller. No problems so far.
I also run my multi-blades over denim 50 times in each direction before and after. Keeps them sharp.
Never had any issues with shaving.

hands down the best shaving cream ive ever used is from Lush: Shave the Planet (http://www.lushusa.com/shop/products/face/shaving-creams/shave-the-planet). Its a bit expensive, but a little goes a long way and its great for sensitive skin

Am I the only one here who shaves without shaving cream? Just water and blades.
And my skin is smooth as a baby's bottom.
I only ever use cream if I feel the urge to shave my goatee, since it's so thick and much harder to shave straight (I've done it...not pleasant :p)...but I've never used anything but a blade and water on the rest of my face and never had a problem.
Oh, and I use the Gillette Mach 3 Turbo.

We have manly skin that doesn't require special "lotions" or "creams!" Water forever!
...to be fair, I can't grow a beard due to genetics, so I just shave my blond neck and mustache while I curse my ancestors for not marrying hearty, bearded individuals. On the plus side, I only have to shave, like, once a month :P

Actually, same deal with me. My goatee is the ONLY place I can grow anything decent that doesn't make me look like a homeless meth addict. I have always wanted a beard, but could never really grow one, at least not as thick as I'd like.
EDIT: Funny thing is...I only use water, and yet I have VERY sensitive skin. It's weird that it even works lol.

I typically just stick with a Gillette Sensor XL. I found the Mach3, Quattro did nothing but irritate me more and gave no better a shave.
Shaving in the shower, I use Proraso pre-shave to prepare the beard and generally use Aveeno Theraputic Shave gel as I have pretty sensitive skin. Sometimes I use Mama bear soaps, but I can't tell whether my badger hair brush is more or less irritating, though it's definitely not faster than regular gel.
I also have a Merkur HD safety razor, but for some reason I've yet to be able to master it... chasing me back to the old and trusty Sensor.

I know this puts me in tin foil hate land, but I find every time Gillette releases a new razor the old blades are shittier and made of softer and softer metal. I only shave every few weeks, so basically I go shaved->beard before shaving again, but a single shave kills a new blade, while older blades won't even cut anymore.
Razors, the worlds biggest scam that isn't insurance.

I guess Im the only one who still uses a dual blade. Razor cartridges are the biggest ripoff there is. I think a pack of 3 is around 6 bucks. If my beard could tolerate an electric I would do that. All electrics seem to do give me a bunch of ingrown hairs and a shitty shave.

I think for me the aveeno stuff is the best stuff you can get if aren't near a lush or boutique type place. I used to use gillette shave gel but after the aveeno Ill never go back. Ill have to pick up the lush stuff sometime when Im out at international plaza.

Just look for stuff with no alcohol. For all the cost and fancy scents, this is usually the difference, comfort wise, between regular and boutique brands.
Nivea for men is pretty much alcohol free for their entire line and you can buy that stuff almost anywhere now.

I've never had a straight shave, but I've always wanted to try one. My two fears are that I would like it too much and end up wanting one each week, but the more real fear is that it seems like 80% of the ppl that still do this service have been collecting social security for a couple decades, so I worry about how steady their hand is.

If you've got an Art of Shaving (http://www.theartofshaving.com/) store near you, they'll be happy to perform the service for you as part of their attempt to sell you a $300 straight razor.
That said, you'd be surprised how many places will still do a straight razor shave.

Its actually gotten a bit rarer, because of the legal "gotcha" of being a re-usable blade in an HIV world. They still exist, but their insurance and personal liability has gone WAY up. This atleast, was how it was explained to me by someone who was looking to expand their hair cutting business to include traditional shaves.
Plus apparently, its rarely taught anymore.

I just saw one of those stores in Atlanta the other week. I'm not sure if there's one near me. I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty there isn't one that's close, but I'll keep an eye out.

The futur is the razor I use and it is excellent. The fact that 10 replacement blades costs only 5 dollars is just gravy. It doesn't take long to reclaim the value of the initial investment, plus you have a razor set that is cool to have sitting on your sink counter.

I thought some of them had a removal single edged blade that was held on by screws so it could be changed/removed. It was a long time ago so they may not make them any more.

The one at Westfield has all their merchandise and they are liberal with their free samples. You can get samples for any lotion, cream, balm or whatever. However, they do not perform free full shaves with a straight razor for random walk-in customers as happens at other locations.
Maybe you can lucky with that at Walnut Creek.
You can't get the razors but you can get the good creams and balms at a Nordstrom's.
EDIT: Every guy should go to a legit barber shop and get a straight edge shave once in a while. Makes you feel like a king.

However, if you're really interested, there's a guide over at The Art of Manliness (http://artofmanliness.com/2009/10/06/how-to-straight-razor-shave/) (though, having only ever paid for one and never actually done it myself, I can't say how useful it is).
