How did this game turn out. I purchased it early and it was heavily flawed, but I found X2 evolved greatly over time.

Now Steam has X3, X3 Reunion and X3: Terran Conflict on for 14.95.

Did it get better, is it worth buying again?

Yes.

Yes. Yes.

I love X3. The learning curve is effing absurd, and to that end you may want to touch on X3 Terran Conflict first, as the tutorial is quite a bit better, but still lacking. You will also most likely want to print out the manual. The game is not newb friendly at all.

On the upside, once you get into it and learn how to play it is an immensely rewarding experience, in my opinion. I love the vastness, and the entirely open ended game play, the graphics are wonderfully effective, the music is extremely conducive to the atmosphere.

It is not a game for everyone, and certainly not for the impatient. You will spend a lot of time in long flights (Of course the SETA helps with this, but still), and growing your empire slowly, so if you want a quick space game this is not the one. She is also a harsh, unforgiving mistress.

If you want an extremely in depth, complex space exploration and corporate empire building game, then this is it.

Hang on, this has direct ship control and empire building? I'm intrigued.

Plus, from what I've heard, it's a whole lot of an easier learning curve than X2 :). I loved X2, so I'm sure it's worth learning.

What did they improve since launch? I remember having a lot of troubles early, but frankly, I don't remember what exactly was wrong with the game. Big flaws though, if I recall.

When I say empire, I may be misleading somewhat. Not an empire in the sense of conquering other worlds, but a financial empire of space stations, factories, refineries, mining outposts. Everything is in cockpit however.

I never played X2, but I adore X3.

I'm a late adopter of the franchise, so it's hard for me to say. My recommendation would be to pick up Terran Conflict, as it's bigger, and is still receiving official patches, the most recent being just a couple of weeks ago.

Also worth noting that Egosoft have said they're not making any more X games, but are working on a different space sim. I'm hoping for some multiplayer aspect.

I can't remember who it is, but someone on CoG is quite knowledgeable about X3, it was them who introduced me to the game.

Hmmmm, Terran Conflict is 10$, or the bundle is 15$. Does Terran Conflict superceed Reunion in every way? Would it just be a waste of 5$?

Squidbot

I don't think you'd play Reunion, to be honest, if you had TC.

Is it just a matter of stories? Is TC every ship from Reunion plus more?

They removed Starforce from this haven't they?

Story and interface mainly. Bigger universe, more options.

Removed in 2.05

Why would a game on Steam have StarForce copy protection?

So a noob to the series would be better off with Terran Conflict then?

Is there a tutorial yet? Borrowed the original X3 from friend awhile ago, and without the manual couldn't figure out how to do anything.

Same, I was so pissed off
The game might be okay but I'm going to hate it until the end of time

Yay for holding grudges!

Seriously though, I think the fact that the planets are just backdrops (you can't travel around them) makes you feel confined despite being in space and the nebula effect when you're traveling looks way too baked and ruins the feeling of flying.

Guess what? The manual wouldn't have helped you; it refers you to the in-game tutorial which is non-existent. That's on my grudge list

So, you gonna go for the 10$, or the bundle for 15$.

I am pretty sure I'm gonna get the game, but I can't decide if I should get the bundle. If there is literally no reason to play Reunion, I would be daft to buy it, however, its a bargain damnit!

Are the "interface changes" really that significant between the two versions. Does the one game not "patch" the other or are they literally two games?

Squidbot
04-27-2010, 03:59 PM
No, the interface changes are not significant. Yes, you might play Reunion. They are two games.

For an extra $5 you may as well pick up the bundle, as you seem to be talking your way round to that. Reunion is not bad, but I prefer TC and it is more user friendly. Comparatively.

And there is some form of Tutorial in TC.

X3: Terran Conflict sounds really interesting.

...just opened steam. Somehow I already bought it.

Goddammit. I bought reunion a long time ago, and could never get anywhere, but I'll still probably buy TC for 10 bucks.

It's so much easier to get a foothold into TC.

Terran Conflict is a far superior game to Reunion, and even has certain aspects (time compression in background, for example) that make the game far easier to get anywhere in.

Hey, I tried Terran Conflict awhile ago and was frustrated and annoyed to the point of quitting almost immediately. Though it would seem a good fit, the XBox 360 controller isn't properly supported (cannot use the right thumbstick -- other odd stuff).

And, the thing I couldn't get past was, it is slow. Really slow. Like, it was taking so long to fly to a warp gate that it looked like it was going to take 5 minutes of flying straight. Am I missing something? Is there some sort of mini-warp I can get?

SETA drive. I believe it's the J key by default.

Oh, I remember a major thing I had against the first game...

The bad guys were called, I shit you readers not, the cocks. It was spelled kh'ak or something like that, but I literally remember lines like "We must not give in to the cock" and "The cock must be beaten back".

you can get the xbox 360 gamepad working but you need some 3rd party driver software that lets you manually remap axis on the controller. it was kinda a pain the ass for me and i forgot exactly what the name of the software was. It was free though, you might have more luck checking out their forums. egosoft.com

I picked up X3:TC on a steam sale a little while ago and I really enjoyed the time i spent in to but i go nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo where and got side tracked by other games then lost my saves when i had to format. I keep meaning to go back but it's serious long term investment to get anywhere I think which while it seems worthwhile from what i've played isn't all that easy to poor in to it

I bought both X3 games a few months ago during the holiday sale. I've been itching to try out Terran Conflict, and this thread pushed me over the edge. I added it to my favorites and hopefully I'll have some time to dive into it this weekend.

I put a couple of hours into TC today. The learning curve doesn't seem bad at all so far, but I've only done a couple of the Terran patrolling missions. I imagine there's a good bit of depth to trading and ship customization. Anyway, it'll suffice until the Black Prophecy beta opens up. :D

I suck with joysticks (wow, that could be taken the wrong way...), so I'm sticking with mouse+keyboard.

Question: is it better to make some money on your own before you start the storyline missions (specifically the Terran storyline in TC)? Do the missions have good rewards?
