View Full Version : Good Place to Buy a Dining Set

So as some of you may know, my considerably better half and I are moving in to a new apartment at the end of this month... We just went bed shopping this past weekend and got a $1600 mattress set for $600, plus an amazing real wood bed (frame, headboard, footboard, etc.) for $170. All in all, a great weekend...

Thing is, we're still in the hunt for a five-piece dining set. Modern style.

Any ideas where we could get one? Craig's List is out of the question - as is eBay.

Thanks.

Do you guys have an Ikea near you? That's the first place I would check.

Sadly not, although one is scheduled to be built next year.

We're located in Denver...

It's age, sir. The young ones these days are so much faster than us old farts.

Thank you, though. Now, go fix yourself a glass of Ovaltine and take a load off.

Good to see you back, fits. So you have a significant other? Where have I been?

As for that frame you got, that's a smokin' deal. We're looking for frames right now, as we had to get rid of our last one since it broke our bed (ironically enough while we were doing the ol' gravy dippin').

I know you already gave the nix to the craigslistings, but it was amazing for our recent move here to Seattle. We got a couch, table, and six dining room chairs for $350 and spent another $20 on fabric to recover they chairs and they look extra awesome now.

With a bit of work, even stuff from the list is greatness.

Why the Craigslist hate?

Any chance you have a Mennonite community nearby?

RE: Craig's List hate - we've been burned before trying to buy from there, so we're not going down that road again...

I'll check on the Mennonite thingy, Serapth.

I bought some stuff at Oak express like 8-10 years ago that I still have. It appears they're part of a company called Furniture Row that includes oak express, denver mattress, and a few others. The oak express stuff I have is pretty solid, although I don't know if that's changed any over the last few years.
They have a clearance center in denver
5445 N. Bannock St.
Denver, Colorado 80216

and their websit is here

Try Ashley Furniture. Their prices/selection is awesome, and you can score some really good deals. Closest one to you is in Grand Junction. They deliver, if that helps.

Crate and Barrel or Pier 1 over Ikea.

I avoid Ikea like the plague. They make cheap stuff but I find you get what you pay for over there. Also, check the sales at a Macy's.

... But regarding the dining set, I've got nothing aside from what everyone else has already said.

I don't know about CA but in florida, macy's charge you through the nose for delivery. I bought a display cabinet a few months back from them and delivery was like 80 or 100 bucks. I think some places have a pick up options but not where I am. It didn't seem worth 100 buck to watch 2 guys lug the thing up my stairs and sit it in the living room.

Thing is, we're still in the hunt for a five-piece dining set. Modern style.I'd check CB2 (http://www.cb2.com/), Crate & Barrel's more modern offering. It can get a little pricey though. If you have a Crate & Barrel outlet nearby, you can pick up some good stuff at better prices.

I wonder if they build those stores like they do their furniture...

You think the whole store comes flat packed with a tiny allen wrench to put it all together?

There is a German company who make houses like that. Their construction method is so precise that when they wanted to get finished a few days quicker than usual to get home for the World Cup, they knew exactly how many extra guys they needed to make up the man hours.

Also, welcome back, Fits. :D

If you decide to go this kind of route, make sure to check out any Habitat ReStores in your area. They're run by Habitat for Humanity, and the one we have usually has some pretty nice furniture and light fixtures.

I would recommend buying used kitchenware as enthusiastically as I would doing the same for toothbrushes.

But apparently a lot of y'all go that route.

Actually, this is one thing really worth checking out. Some of these " we take your stuff and redistribute to/employee homeless/underpriveledge people are an epic scam. Its a shame you need to research such things, but many for profits put up drop off boxes and pretend to be charities, while many charities have such a poor execution they might as well not exist.

Why's that? I bought a great set of chairs for $35, sanded and repainted them and they were like new.

Kelegacy

Um, you can wash kitchenware. I see no problem with it. You use eating utensils someone else has used each time you eat out, as well as drinking from the same cups, eating from the same table and sitting in the same chair as hundreds or thousands of others. I don't see any problem here.

I've gone the Goodwill route and Salvation Army as well and own some nice pieces of furniture as a result (my favorite piece in the entire house is a stand I bought for peanuts). And clothing. Most of my name brand apparel is from those places, or was at one time. I haven't been there in a long time.

And ironically, you would probably eat at a restaurant without a seconds thought about it, no? ;)

Ikea and Pier 1 are both crap. Do you have a Raymour and Flannigan near you? They have great furniture. It is a little pricey but well worth it. Very good quality furniture.
