The Ship is available for $5 on Steam this weekend, so I picked it up. I am having an amusing time playing through the single player and was wonder what the multiplayer was like. Anyone up for a game later tonight?

I've had the game for a long while, but I haven't played it much, so I'd be willing to give it a shot.

Multiplayer was basically deserted the week after it came out.

It's that good, huh? Well, if there is enough interest, maybe we could all find a server and give it a shot, anyway.

It looks like they released a patch yesterday that added a fair bit of content: http://www.theshiponline.com/news.php

Looking at the server list, the game is plenty active enough to play with people we don't know.

Ah, righto!

Hey, Lint, have you played this multiplayer? How does it play?

Good question! It's been a really long time. Here's what I remember:

Scavenging around the ship for weapons, satisfying basic needs. In the main mode everyone is assigned to kill a specific other passenger, so you have to figure out who you're supposed to kill and hunt them down while avoiding your own assassin. IIRC you get periodic hints as to the location of your victim, and changing clothes might help enemies from recognizing you.

So, essentially like the single player. Are the people you're hunting / hunting you the other players, or are they AI controlled? Hmm.. I guess I'll just have to jump on tonight. Probably around 8-8:30 EDT.

They can be AI controlled, but with the recent discount it looks like there are plenty of new players. I just played a little bit myself, and I enjoyed it.

If you like being a jerk you can play as a passenger, who just walks around the ship and gets people arrested if he/she see them attacking each other :p

Yep for $5 you can't go too far wrong, bought it as well. I'm a huge sucker for the Steam weekend deals.

Yah...for $5, if I only get 1 hour of entertainment out of it...well, that's worth it to me :)

Looks like all purchases of the Ship come with a guest pass. If anyone wants to try this game out before committing the outrageous $5, just ask and you can have mine.

By the way, Arphahat, I did a fair bit of late-night The Ship Deathmatch and it was quite fun. Each weapon, like in Hunt, is worth a certain amount of money depending on how long it's been since someone used it to kill anyone else. There is no 'target' to hunt, weapons are more readily available, there are no rounds, and passengers are much less common. Just murder, murder, everywhere ;D

On the server I played on you can even scrounge up shivs in prison.

I definitely will be playing some more tonight. The Hunter mode is novel, but it can be frustrating when you are still picking up the game, I think. :)

Yah, I played through the tutorial last night and the beginning of the single player game. I think I got a little frustrated with a bug in the single player...(with the barman) that I gave up...but I would really like to try with some humans :)

Which bug? I assume something with the barman missions?

Yah, was just an issue of giving the barman the money after retrieving the wallet...I gave the guy all the money he wanted, but I was accused of holding back and not giving him all the money (though it was all I had)...so then he told me I was no longer welcome and I got a mission failure.

Probably part bug and part human error on my side. I haven't retried it yet, so I'm not sure.

Ah, I know what you're talking about. The first time I tried, I gave the least amount, but needed to give the middle value. Try again and do that and it should work.

Yah...that must have been it...I guess I shouldn't have called it a bug, but more of an issue between the keyboard and the chair..
