View Full Version : Beat Hazard (song list?)

Anyone playing Beat Hazard? It's my Audiosurf for 2010. Truly amazing.
I'm looking for some song recommendations. I thought that the Star Wars Imperial March worked well, but there's a part where the song is too quiet. The explosions of the shipped matched up well though.

I've found that sometimes the game will summon a boss ship right at a slower/quieter part of a song. That's not to say it's really fun, it's just that the algorithm for determining when ships and asteroids are spawned needs a little work, much like Audiosurf needed (and fixed) the timing for when you'd get points for matching.

I hate that, on a lot of Creed songs it does that how am supposed to kill the boss ship when it is a missile laser boss and there are also little guys around when my guns have no pew pew.
I have enjoyed the game so far however. A lot of metal songs work well if you want a lot of firepower all the time. I've done mostly High on Fire songs along with the odd Metallica song and they have worked good, have not tried any of my Lamb of God or couple of other bands yet.

I agree. There needs to be some type of mechanic that lets you be powerful when the song is slow or quiet. Maybe tradeoff some multipliers?

This might work well especially once you hit the multiplier limit, which is 200 it would give you something to do with them at point or at least make it harder to get that high if you had options for them.

So, I saw that a writer at Kotaku was using Infected Mushroom. I gave some of their songs a try.
Yeah, they certainly fit the trance vibe.
EDIT: Becoming Insane--the title fits and so does the music. It's good for high scores too.

Songs with a lot of distortion (i.e. the shoegaze genre) make for a lot of crazy shit on screen. This game is easily the new Audiosurf.

Surprisingly, The Hell Song by Sum 41 is sorta boring to play.
The game chokes when I try to read my "Music" folder which is just 1000+ tracks lumped in, and sadly doesn't read MP4 audio (.m4a, which all my imported CDs are encoded with) yet. But they added .FLAC and .ogg yesterday so it may happen soon enough.

Any dance music works pretty well. I've greatly enjoyed playing the game to Little Boots, La Roux, and the like.
Under the Influence of Giants works well, as does Marina & The Diamonds. I don't know, I just pick stuff at random and usually end up having a good time. Also, the multiplier definitely doesn't top out at 200...had 249 a second ago, but that might have changed with the patch and I just didn't notice.
As far as slow parts of the song goes, that is what your smart bombs are for.
Here are a couple of videos I posted in the Steam Weekend Deal thread a few days ago:

After more playing, I agree with Kats on the slow parts.
So, I've been playing Infected Mushroom. The song Becoming Insane is 7:20 long. I've yet to do 100%, but it usually nets me 1.5 million+ in rank. Oh, I've done 7:19 on it--twice. The last ten seconds are amazing and intense!
One. Freaking. Second.
EDIT: that 1.5 is my total score not what I get per song.

I think that's the point though, the easier the setting, the easier you can see what's going on. On Insane it's much harder to see incoming ships/bullets etc. Just checked and I had 6 mil on a 3 minute and under song.

So I bought it and have been playing it religiously since last night. Still suck but I can consistently make it through songs on Hardcore now. Highest score on a single song is only 1.8M on the Scott Brown remix of Euphony's Space Invader. Pretty poor for a nearly 5 minute song. I'd love an invite to the COG group so I can have something to strive for. Stoke.Ydral (http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197996664690) is the name.

I play a lot more survival than single songs. Trying to beat a whole album but there's inevitably a song with a long slow section that's really rough, often combined with a boss. I've made it through 3-4 songs but inevitably die soon after.

Same here for me, it gets hard, but I find that after a few playthroughs in one sitting I get used to it. I still don't understand how music and such correlates to level design. I think I'm more a fan of the gravity crash or everyday shooter design philosophy where you kill something and that is a note, killing over and over makes the song.

Just got 26,000,000 points on a 21 minute round of survival! I leveled up through, like 7 levels of elite. My previous best time was just a little over 7 minutes. God, I love this game, though it currently has me reduced to a shivering husk. That was some seriously intense shit! I actually ran out of lives pretty early into the game, before I even hit 10 minutes. Fucking edge of my seat all the way throughout.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the Boss Slayer achievement? Do you just need to survive an absolutely ridiculous amount of time?
By the way, the album I was playing was Anthem by Less Than Jake. My appreciation for the band has faded over the years, but their songs have some interesting rhythms and look and play beautifully in this game.

I talked to doogie about this, but anyone interested in doing something like the following:
I, or anyone participating, adds a random song to the thread, we all play it for the weekend and upload the scores/screenshots. Winner of the weekend gets to put up a song, and everyone who participates gets a point (with more for 1st/2nd/3rd). Score would of course have to be from that period and not achieved beforehand. Possibly give out some prices at the end of it for all who participate if some people want to donate a prize or help pay for ship on the stack of games I have sitting here (or get a code from a steam sale or something).
Anyways, thoughts?

I see your point, but I think telling someone they have no reason to play along because they "won" 7 days ago would be a little harsh. I feel like the more interesting thing here would be to get a feel for new music, get to know eachother better, and just have something fun to look forward to once a week.
There is no guarantee that you can always repeat well on a song because you decided to toss it up either.
