Who cares about the Nexus One now. This thing IS basically the Nexus One... only better.

But you're right, either Verizon or HTC fucked themselves by not releasing this on Verizon sooner.

Goddamnit, HTC, is it so much to ask for you to put out a new keyboarded Android phone?

Shit, I'd pay for just a Touch Pro2 with Android on it if they had it.

HTC makes the best phone keyboards I've used so far, except for the one on the G1 which is rather uncomfortable, but still better than Motorola's Godawful excuses for keyboards.

I just don't understand what the deal is. Software keyboards suck.

I've been looking forward to this phone ever since I first heard about it. I held off on buying a Droid because I knew this was coming. It will be my first smart phone, and I'm incredibly excited.

Couple of points. It doesn't record HD Video, yet. It might with a future update, but on the 29th, it won't. Also, it's not the Nexus One. It's using the same processor and has the same ROM and RAM, but it's a different screen (or at least doesn't have the same screen/multi-touch issues), has a better camera, and comes with 8 GB of internal memory.

I used to be very pissed at the iphone keyboard for the first year, mostly because there wasn't a landscape mode then, but now I don't have a problem. I can't blind text, I oubt I could even do that without a traditional key pad.

I thought I needed a hardware keyboard when I first got my Droid, but I almost never use it. Between the excellent sensitivity and feedback of the software keyboard and the incredible word prediction, I'm totally fine without the hardware one. That said, it is nice to have the option for other apps that can utilize it, but I wouldn't mind not having one.

In addition to typing, hardware keyboard makes game controls much easier. The emulator, and Angband/Nethack in particular I couldn't play without one.

My issue with the hardware keyboard is the weight. I'd love one for games, and lengthy emails, but they make the phone too heavy for my liking. It's a tough choice, but I'd prefer the lighter weight to the benefit of a keyboard given how little I think I'd end up using it anyway.

I Hate the iPhone keyboard and the prediction abilities are shit. I also find its "correction" of iphone to iPhone exceedingly douchey. The keyboard is hands down the worst part of the Apple experience, well aside from their store/iTunes.

There is an application called TouchWriter, that if you could implement it into the email/SMS directly, I would have long ago switched to.

It is only available on Verizon at the Incredible. It is also known as the Desire on T-Mobile. It is made by the same people as the Nexus One with much of the same innards save for the better camera and more RAM.

The Desire is a different phone. While it may have similar specs, it has a different design and some different features (e.g. the camera is worse, for one).

Android and Me had a post up yesterday about how apparently the "Incredible" camera in this thing isn't actually any better than the one in the N1: http://androidandme.com/2010/05/phones/the-incredible-camera-showdown-droid-incredible-vs-nexus-one/

Without that camera, I'm not sure I see it as any better than the N1 on paper, honestly.

The HTC apps alone make it better than the N1

That's debatable, in my book.

Frankly, my experience with past HTC software is that it's a lot of flash obfuscating the operating system, and I'd rather stick to stock, so my OS remains up to date, which is an important consideration in Android land.

Yeah, I think HTC sense is sometimes used on hardware that shouldn't have it (Hero). But their exclusive software makes those phones a must-have for me. That's why my next phone is an Evo.

I'm with J on this one. I read that comparison of the cameras and came away far more impressed with the N1 than I already was. And I think the HTC Sense skin sucks. I've used it, didn't care for it. The weather widget is pretty, but it's a weather widget. I saw it on the HD2 and on my friend's Hero. Just not impressed.

Plus, as I've said before, the N1 is likely going to get all the upgrades to Android and first. Anything else will need to go through either carriers or HTC or Motorola or whatever manufacturer so they can rewrite their skin to work on top of the new OS update.

Adam Blue
05-05-2010, 02:01 PM
Well, it's more than just widgets. There are exclusive apps and what not. Basically it's vanilla Android plus extras...can't go wrong with that. Yeah, the upgrades may take longer, but then there are custom ROM's. Plus HTC's built in stuff will at times rival the next OS update.

Using both I personally wouldn't go without HTC. If you just don't like the skin, turn it off. It's really not just about the looks.

benson
05-05-2010, 02:06 PM
I do agree that they do add some custom apps. But if you want the custom apps on a stock Android device, you can just get those in a ROM as well (I think, I stopped messing with ROMs since I got the N1). So really, can't that argument go both ways, you can turn off HTC Sense if you don't like the skin, but you can get a custom ROM that adds those features to a stock Android device?

Why the hell wouldn't someone want an Incredible, then. Unless I'm being incredibly dense (very possible), turning on the Sense UI would give you a Super N1.

It just depends on what you want. You may not need the added features included in Sense.

Here's some info (http://www.laptopmag.com/review/cell-phones/htc-droid-incredible.aspx?page=2).

Also, it looks like 2.1 roms with Sense cannot have the UI switched to vanilla. It would require a custom ROM.

Because it's really not that "super" once you take sense out of the picture. It's just a rebadged N1 with HTC software and a theoretically better camera.

If you don't like the HTC software, there's no reason to get one.

I'd personally rather have stock, and add widgets and apps as I like, and be able to update later. Obviously not everyone agrees.

Also, the N1 has the best support for rooting, so you can bet someone will port the Incredible ROM to it soon enough anyway.

Rooting is beyond my current know-how, so I doubt I'd go down that path.

I'd also rather have stock Android, but wouldn't turning "off" the Sense give me that? Or am I simplifying it way too much?

I'm with J on this, if you want stock Android, you'll be better served with an N1 in that it should get the latest updates first. Per Adam Blue, you can turn off Sense, but not totally on Android 2.1, so again, you'd probably be best served with an N1.
