So I recently deleted about 50GB of songs the other day. Reason being is that I never listeed to half of it and all of it, save the NIN stuff, was procurred in nefarious manners. I am needing a new collection, but I'd like to start if off with some new stuff. I want to know what your recommendations are.

I don't really care what genre (except rap, hip hop, death metal, and country). Show me the money!

I need to cull my MP3 collection. Way back, I downloaded the Rolling Stone Magazine top 500 and listened to them from 500 to 1, and they've been on my playlist since. And it's really annoying to be listening to something awesome and have Muddy Waters come on. I mean, it's good music, but it's not really my style. So I need to delete a whole crapload.

As for my recommendation, get the Silversun Pickups album Carnavas! I've listened to it a couple times already, pretty awesome!

This. I hadn't thought of doing that before, but, if you look at my last.fm page (http://www.last.fm/user/LintOfDeath), you get a good idea of the stuff I listen to most. Note that I have somewhat of a heavy bias toward relaxing music on last.fm (e.g. my most played album in last.fm is Sí by Julieta Venegas) because it's nice to fall asleep to. If you look at mine, you are guaranteed to find something new and the site works pretty well as far as previewing other people's music by streaming it.

Check out my blog.

I'm just going to go all out here ...

Boards of Canada (Music Has the Rights to Children, Geogaddi, In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country, Closes Vol. 1, The Campfire Headphase, Twoism, in that order)
Refused (The Shape of Punk to Come)
The Flashbulb (Soundtrack to a Vacant Life)

Aphex Twin (Richard D. James Album, Druqks, Selected Ambient Works 85-92)
Phillip Glass (the Essential Phillip Glass)
Do Make Say Think (Goodbye Enemy Airship The Landlord is Dead, & Yet & Yet)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor (f#a#infinity, Yanqui U.X.O.)
Air (Moon Safari, Talkie Walkie)
Front Line Assembly - (Civilization, Tactical Neural Implant, Artificial Soldier)
Beirut - (Gulag Orkestar)
FLAQUE - (Mindscapes)
Thomas Newman (The Shawshank Redemption OST; always has been one of my favorite movie soundtracks)
Clint Mansell (The Fountain OST, another one of my favorite movie soundtracks)
Hooverphonic (The Magnificent Tree)
2562 (Aerial. Dubstep album. Good stuff)
Sigur Rós (Ágćtis Byrjun, (), and Takk...)
Discuss (Discuss)
My Bloody Valentine (Loveless)
Slowdive (Souvlaki)
The Radio Dept. (Pet Grief)
Autumn's Grey Solace (Over the Ocean, Shades of Grey)
M83 (M83, Before the Dawn Heals Us, Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Lost Ghosts)
Obfusc - (Cities of Cedar)
Explosions in the Sky (The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, How Strange, Innocence)

I highly recommend Loveless. It's an acquired taste but it's a very rewarding album. The vocals are treated as another instrument and is mixed as such. Cool stuff.

I think the point of the image is to express the fact that every genre has great things in it. I think it does a rather poor job of doing saying that since just because one might be interested in X and Y genre, doesn't mean said person's taste in music sucks. Everyone likes different things. It's pretty rare if you get someone who literally likes every genre on the face of the Earth ... if that's even possible.

I think the picture means more than that; if one can't refine one's taste past "just not rap and country", it expresses a major ignorance of music quality in terms of both likes and dislikes.

The point of the image is it's just stupid to write off entire genres entirely. There's good and there's crap in every genre and it infuriates me to hear people say that they hate an entire genre.

Artists to check out:

Astronautalis -- Always hip hop, but it meets (in order of albums): lo-fi electronica, slide guitars and synths, and indie rock (often the stylings of Polyphonic Spree, in specific) as time goes along.
Busdriver -- In his own words, "It's the resurgence of the happy black rappers..." Mostly, it's just cool stuff. Guy raps fast and can be hard to follow, but he's smart, and the production is solid.
Sigur Ros -- These guys are in a world of their own. I think it's a beautiful one, too.
Mew -- Rock, with a lot of cool stuff going on. But more than that, catchy and fun. "Know that there is no escape from my Snow Brigade..."
Stars of Track and Field -- A very delicious blend of rock and electronica. True hipsters would call them too poppy, I think, but whatever. I'm addicted.
Amon Tobin -- He's done a lot of stuff (Splinter Cell 3 soundtrack, for you gamers out there -- everybody here). I really recommend Foley Room. It has a sort of industrial feel to it, and it's very cool.
Venetian Snares -- Haha, oh, wow. Just give it a go. Try Rossz, or My Downfall (Original Soundtrack) first. His other work is often a bit off-putting to most people.
British Sea Power -- These guys are something. I just love them so much! Sweeping sounds built across waves of guitars and a soothing voice.
Jupiter One -- Catchy, dancy synth rock. Give it a shot. Their sound is fresh and, uh, I really like it!
ZOX (first two albums only) -- The first band since ELO to put violins and rock bands together effectively. The lead singer's voice can take some getting used to, some people say, but it comes together quite well.
OAR (Early work)-- Americana and rock strung together. I understand that a fair number of college students from the late nineties still know all the words to "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker" by heart. "Oh, my twenty thrown down in my fist of rage, and the man to my left has folded down..."
Modest Mouse (DUH!) -- You know...
Frightened Rabbit -- Some Scottish people got together and made an awesome band. That's about it. No special genre, just goodness.
Thao with the Get Down Stay Down -- Here's some lovely folk rock for you! Enjoy.
Seasick Steve -- Blues. Blues blues blues. Good at 'em, too. One man, one guitar -- three strings -- and a stomp box.
Electric Light Orchestra -- OH MY GOD ELO. Favorite rock band EVAR, except maybe British Sea Power. Rock and roll, orchestras, science fiction concept albums -- everything a geek needs!
Rilo Kiley -- I just like it. I recommend it. Story over!
Air -- Take a seat over here and chill out. These guys can definitely help with that. Synth/acoustic guitar duo -- French
Haujobb -- Some German Industrial for you. Guys totally slipped under my radar until I saw one of their DJs (DJ Daniel Myer/Meier) going solo for two hours at a VSnares show. Incredible! Cinematic
M.I.A. -- Have some fun with this. Catchy, a touch political, all that wonderful jazz. Sick beats, too.
Chimp Beams -- A weird little act, some Japanese guys moved to NYC and started stringing some Dub together. Good Dub, too, if you ask me.
Lemon Jelly -- Just some fun electronica stuff. Nothing special, but I like it more than most.
Gang Starr -- classic, old school hip hop. Give it a go.
RJD2 -- Awesome hip hop DJ.
Wax Tailor -- awesome hip hop DJ. Samples movies heavily.
Azure Ray -- "Dream pop" is their official genre. I dunno. But I listen to it to calm me down, and it works. Beautiful music.
Antarctic (http://www.myspace.com/antarcticsounds) -- Awesome instrumental rock. AWESOME. Listen to Paseo la Salamandria. Their drummer, especially, blows me away.
Izzi Creo (http://www.myspace.com/izzicreo) Also awesome instrumental rock. The guitarist is something special.
House Of Freaks -- GuitaristXVocalist/drum duo from over a decade ago. Literally dodged fame when they immediately moved back to the middle of nowhere whence they came, from LA when they finished their first album, Monkey on a Chain Gang, which was really good and gathered a healthy amount of attention in the area at the time. Both of them know their stuff really well. Folk Rock, with a Southern-Gothic-Grapes-of-Wrath bent.
Vampire Weekend -- Indiepop! Happy indiepop!
Danielson -- Indiepop! Happy indiepop! If you don't like the idea of Christian music, stay away.
Wolf Parade -- Just some cool, catchy Canadian folks. Don't make up for all the shitty music Canada's given us over the years, but they're not half bad, either.
Whole Wheat Bread -- (Remember when punk rock was awesome? These guys do.)
Grandaddy -- Some synth, some (just a bit of) punk, some stories about space, and a lot of questions to ask. They build a lovely wall of guitars and background noise and are deliciously mellow. Everything Beautiful is Far Away.

That's it. Those are the cream of the crop artists that I can't not listen to at least once a week.

I'm not really writing off entire genres. The only thing that I am pointing out is that I have a preference against those. That is all. Never said that they were horrible nor did I say that I was never interested in those genres. There are some hip hop/rap stuff that I enjoy, but as a whole, it doesn't satisfy me. Same could be said for all others.

I learned long ago that the Spanish/Mexicans/South Americans do hip-hop, and dance music in general, much better than we do in the US. Maybe it's just because I can't understand the lyrics though. I'm sure they're still singing about how they want to fornicate with a girl in a club.

I think part of it is how multisyllabic Spanish can be combined with just how freaking fast they talk even normally. I mean, holy Hell, Bebe is a vocal machine gun:

Since you named almost all the same bands I love, here's two under the radar albums from the last few years that I really enjoyed.

Plants and Animals - Parc Avenue (http://www.amazon.com/Parc-Avenue-Plants-Animals/dp/B0013D8JRE): A Canadian debut that kicks off like Queen and closes with some psychedelic jamming.

Mates of State - Re-Arrange Us (http://www.amazon.com/Re-Arrange-Us-Mates-State/dp/B0016MJ2PU): Husband and wife duo rock like Modest Mouse with a good indie sound. This is their latest CD, and I think their best.

Also, I bet you'd like Radiohead, the White Stripes, Wilco, Nick Cave, and Iggy Pop, if you don't already. You have a few jazz and swing groups in there, so check out classics like Glenn Miller, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, and John Coltrane's Blue Train and Giant Steps, because those are the best.

I'm not seeing the band that has gotten me back into modern rock, Muse. I had pretty much written off modern rock bands, as none of them really appealed to me at all. Once I heard a remix of New Born on the Swordfish soundtrack, I downloaded the albums they had at the time, went "Holy crap those are amazing" and bought every album I could, as well as buying each album as they came out. Seriously, each album is really REALLY good. It's hard for me to pick a specific standout song on any of the albums.

I love reading the posts of people who really love music, because of all of the time and energy they put into it. :)

I used to be an 'except rap and country' until I listened to Tupac and Johnny Cash. So...those are cool.

I'd suggest Jet because they're new and basically sound like The Who with better production values. Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Ryan Adams...folk/rock.

Nina Simone in case you like great voices.

Bob Dylan. Everything John Williams has done for Star Wars. The Superman theme.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

I only go for the Artist, Song and album. Year is superfluous and Genre is so loose for many artists that it is useless.

Good stuff all, folks.

I'd throw in some Presets, if you're into electro.
Melancholy stuff? Check out Elefant.
I'd also suggest some Sistermachinegun and Pigface if you like Nine Inch Nails.
If you like pop music, The Bravery is like a slice of 1986 with a dash of 2009.
Also, some rap is downright amazingly good. N.E.R.D. have a lot of hot tracks, as do Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. All music has good within it somewhere. But only when the people performing do it with heart.
