Is it a mandatory install?

Do you really need to even ask now-a-days when talking about a recently made PS3 game? From what I heard it's at the max of 5 gigs. Have a sandwich.

Crap. Sorry, Duke.

I was hoping the PS3 had gotten away from the mandatory installs.

No it's right when you pop in the game. And btw, this game looks like shit on the PS3. I already beat it on PC, but want the trophies... but it doesn't even look impressive. I'm very disappointed.

On top of the fact that some of the trophies are close to impossible! Beat the game on hard without using a Vita-Chamber? Beat the game on Survivor with out using a Vita-Chamber? What the fuck?

Now I'm really curious. What's wrong with it? Is it the normal "the PC can do higher resolutions" complaint, the "this looked good a year ago, but not so much now" complaint, or is something really wrong on the PS3 compared to the other platforms?

It just looks blurry and dull. I can't believe how much better it looks on PC. Makes me wonder how much better Dead Space looks on PC.

Wow, I really need to build a new PC. I thought it looked amazing on my PC last summer, and when I tried the demo on the PS3 I thought it looked just slightly better, and it had a smoother framerate.

Sigh. I hate being poor.

I'm guessing you weren't running it on the highest settings?

I'm running a PIII 3.2 with 2 gigs of ram I built back in '05 to play Doom 3. The only upgrade I've made to it was a new video card upgrade just to handle Bioshock at all last summer. It's an nVidia 7600.

So I can't run it on maxed settings, but I ran it at what I would call 'above-medium' and got a really good framerate. Some screen tearing issues that v-sync didn't seem to resolve, but I had all the shadows and water effects and all that stuff on.

It's still the most beautiful game on my computer. This machine has run very admirably for the last few years, but I am really feeling the urge for a new PC. My two 200 gigs are constantly full, and when I hear people talking about these games that look so amazing, I feel like I'm not getting the most out of my hi-def TV/monitor by using a lower end machine.

I follow the PC building threads, and it looks like I could build a pretty close to top of the line rig for $700 or below. But I have a shit job after being laid off from all this economic bullshit, and I simply won't have that kind of money until well after the holidays.

It's like having an itch I can't scratch. I mean, I'm actually looking for things to sell. Unfortunately my TV and my consoles are the only things of value that I own!

Your computer is 13 years old?

He was very forward thinking - building a computer for Doom 3 in 1995. He just didn't realize it would be like 9 years before it came out.

I'd like to point out;

I haven't yet seen the loading issues with the Unreal3 engine. (the issue where it takes a few seconds to load all the textures like you see in Gears of War and Mass Effect). I saw it a lot on the PC, but havent seen it once on the PS3. I'm deep into the game too.

Two reasons you see it on 360, one is because they use more than one vendor/model of DVD drive and some handle the streaming better than others. If you have a good DVD drive in your 360 you'll hardly notice UE streaming textures in. The other is that while many 360 games will cache to hard drive if it is there, Mass Effect conspicuously does not...

You won't notice it on PS3 with a hard drive install.

The only time you'd really notice it on PC is if there was contention for I/O.

Not something I'd blame on the 360 or on Unreal engine when you get right down to it. Blame lies with the developer IMHO in cases where this is a problem.

Doctor Who suggested I upgrade, so I did.

Eh, I beat it on 360 and to me it looks the same on the PS3. A little more bloom and I miss the 360's triggers but thats about it. Haven't played it on PC though.

Soul Calibur IV has an optional install on the PS3 and Dead Space has no install at all.

I'm guessing when you turn off your PS3 and find a cheap copy of Bioshock for the 360 :p;)

Good to see there are a few exceptions to the rule.
