And the big just keep getting bigger. Gamestop, the largest specialty games retailer in the world, is purchasing leading French game retailer Micromania.

The deal, valued at $700 million, will give Gamestop 332 stores in France, a nation which they had no prior presence in. The deal still has to be approved by European Union regulators.

With this acquisition Gamestop will have nearly 1,100 stores in Europe alone and more than 5,100 outlets worldwide.

This is a good thing, the thinner they spread themselves now the more money they will lose when digital distribution becomes the norm. I also see developers doing what they can to minimize the corporate based used game trade, hopefully the publishers will have their back.. I believe by 2020 Gamestop will be, at best, struggling to stay afloat.

Wowzors. I didn't realise Gamestop was so huge.

A quick stop to Wikipedia fixed that up, Electronic Boutique, or EB Games as its known here downunder. Chuck me on the hate train, EB Games blows chunks.

You know, you guys hate on Gamestop quite a bit, but where else can you go to find a game that's even a few months old? Or a game not published by EA, Activision, or one of the manufacturers? If Gamestop went under, you could pretty much kiss Atlas goodbye; I've never seen a copy of Odin Sphere floating around a Wal-mart.

I've never had any really annoying problems at my local gamestop. In fact, the guys over there have always been really nice to deal with (even gave me a 360 lanyard and some free posters).

I don't really care about Gamestop either way. I generally go in there and I buy a game new to support the people who made it but I've also manage to find some games I never got around to a long while back at a good used price-point. Heretic is right. For all the hate they get, they still have titles I could probably find on the internet but I'm too lazy to wade through to get. So they're convenient.

And the people who are at the store I go to are actually really nice guys and have never once said "You know we have that used" or tried to offer me disc protection.

It's amazing how many business have been taken over by competitors from the same field recently. I take it Micromania has been feeling the crunch then?

I don't think there is a Micromania in my town. If I ever walk inside one, I can expect to be pressured into buying used games, strategy guides, and pre-order stuff. I should also watch out for the "used games sold as new" scheme.
