As was recently pointed out Santa does not have his real name in his profile. Also he is an aspiring writer. Santa is looking to you gaming community to help him come up with a good pen name. As reward for such help the person who comes up with the winning pen name will get a scarf knit by me, nothing fancy but you get to pick the color. It will be super soft and warm.

I suppose it all depends on what he is writing, doesn’t it?
I mean, I am working on a children’s novel, so I’ve decided on a name that I’ve found to be rather warm and welcoming. But, for you, it has to speak to the intended audience. For example, Chuck L. Worthy might be good (okay, that name is never good) for someone writing a comedy, but not for someone working on a horror.
More info, please. :)

He is a playwright, but there are names that are good regardless of the intended audience. His plays are black comedies.

So, here's a question: why does he feel the need to have a pen name? Is his real name that bad? I don't honestly understand why some people use pen names. I don't know what it's for. Marketability? Pronounceability? De-region-ification?

I think part of it is also in the case that the books end up being unsuccessful or panned by critics, you get a clean slate with every new name. Distinctiveness and avoiding name-based prejudice would be other reasons.

I guess I did think of one example: Nora Roberts writes romance, and she used the pen name "J.D. Robb" under which she could write detective mystery novels without upsetting her base audience.

There are lots of reasons, really. Some really don't like their names, as you mentioned. Others, however forward-looking it may appear, like to think it would be possible to maintain a sense of privacy, even if they become popular. And then there are indeed those who do it for marketability, and those other reasons; for example, I read that J. K. Rowling’s name was abbreviated because the publisher wasn't sure boys would buy a book with a male hero written by a woman, or something to that effect.

The rule of authors names is usually short first name, long last name. There are exceptions, of course (Stephen King comes to mind) but in general, you want a forgettable first name and a memorable last one. Even in the S.K. case, King is a powerful name - just like Cassius.
However, I kindof like the sound of Cassius Claus.

One reason is..yes, I don't particular care for my name. It's bland...and common. The second, if I am to put my name on a profile anywhere on the internet, I don't like to use my real name if I don't have to. Just a privacy issue. So I thought it would be an interesting thread idea to start a "PS needs a pen name". I did like your guesses...very serious :). Believe me i'm not that serious of a person...but it's not to think someone thinks I actually have that deep thinking in me:D Ask Ms. Claus, she'll tell you..i'm shallow as hell.

I always knew that Ms. Claus wore the pants in that family. Ol' Kringle was just too much of a softy to take charge.
I thought I made it quite clear in my "talking about Ms. Claus" in any thread I do...she's the boss:D

And you are so very subtle about it  You are subtle as you are fast walking...pokey :p

You were our runner-up...maybe a consolation prize is in order

Congrats on the wins! Those names sound rather awkward to me when read aloud, but I'm sure others have different ears.
I guess I'll just have to make someone else claim Bartholomew Stringtheory. :p

You did have some great names. We are trying to think of ways of giving away more scarves. Maybe donations for Child's Play and get a scarf or something like that...or a lottery choosing a winner from the donators...but something like that we need to talk to the "management" about...but more scarves will be offered...

I'm just starting to knit other things I haven't done much other than scarves, but I'm working on it. It takes time to teach myself in between classes and studying and intership.

A very good point indeed!!
If I have a son he's going to be named Corwin, and I will be very insistent about it. Though I may concede to Carl, middle name Corey. <3 Chronicles of Amber.

Hahahaha, oh god, I laughed at this for a whole minute just now.
I just remembered Robert Hamburger. ("My name is Robert, and I can't stop thinking about ninjas!")

I always liked Big McLargehuge best, but I find new reasons to laugh every time I read the list. MST3k was a brilliant show and Space Mutiny was one of their best episodes. If I recall correctly, the people involved with the series thought so, too.

What's really funny to me is the guy who played Ryder (Reb Brown) also played Captain America in those two god-awful tv movies back in the '70s. Also he ended up marrying the chick who played the "grandma/daughter" Leah. Sorry, Dr. Grandma/Daughter.

And what you read doesn't have an imagined aural component? In any case, I was presuming it'd be a name that people would discuss by word of mouth. That's part of what made the product name Wii so embarrassingly bad when it was first announced :p

You know, I just saw PS's name in the news section on the front page and I gotta say it kicks mighty fucking ass. Better than any of the ones I've seen in this thread (no offence to those involved).
Santa, I'd stick with it. That's a fucking epic name.

There were two winners. S.C. Cassius also took a prize. I plan on alternating the names so both will be shown.

It took you 4 hours to read that? I'm hoping there was some major distraction, like a big boobed blond was on your lap so you couldn't read it a second time till 4 hours later. Otherwise it reads as if you took 4 hours to read twice ;).
