Since there seem to be more than a few board game enthusiasts around here, this seemed as good a place to ask about Dune, the late 70’s board game (based on the books, of course). My brother and I came across it online the other day, and it seemed rather interesting, but unfortunately also rather hard to come by. So, I was wondering: is it worth the effort to track down (and pay the generally exorbitant price for) or to even make our own version (since there are resources aplenty online)?

Dune board game? Yes please.
I apologize for adding nothing to this thread.

It certainly sounds like an interesting game, but are you willing to shell out a bare-minimum of $100 for a good, complete copy? While I'm sure you could find one in excellent condition, you could also buy nearly two or more modern games with better materials and productions values in a similar vein to the old Dune game. Sure, they wouldn't have the precise theme...but they'd get the job done at a fraction of the cost.
My vote would be for any other space-themed game of a similar nature to Dune; if that won't do the trick, my second vote would be for tracking down the resources and putting it together yourself. If I'm going to spend $100 or more on a board game, it had better be beyond snazzy...and most 31-year-old board games aren't going to fulfill that requirement.

It was a great game, but remember you really need more than two people to get the best out of it.

Looks like you can find the French version (with English rules) for $55.95 from a few different outlets. And if what I was reading elsewhere is true, the French version includes both expansions, so it seems like a pretty decent deal.
Edit: Oops. Look closer, dummy. Unavailable or out of print. Such useful listings.

The couple times I've played it, it was really fun. The way combat works is kind of nerve-wracking as you try to bluff or outguess your enemy.

If someone tells me its worth it, it's possible (though I'd probably opt for homemade). This is one of those cases where I have no personal experience to go on, not even a vague childhood memory, so I thought I'd at least get some trusted opinions.

Holy crap. 100.00! It sounds amazing but I would have to have some of you post reviews before I check it out.

It isn't worth it. It isn't a horrible game, but there are better political/resource management games out there than the original Dune. And it takes like 8 hours to play. And that is if you know how to play. You move around the board, collect spice, fight sand worms, make alliances (which is probably too complex for it's own good) and eventually control the world and the spice flow.
It is ok, but I'd never pay $100 for it. It maybe ranks as a decent $30-$40 purchase.

I own and enjoy this game. It's not a quickie, but I certainly wouldn't say it's 8 hours either. More like 4. It's not so good I would recommend paying $100 for it, there's plenty of other better, cheaper games out there.
I've seen this amazing homemade board (http://boardgamegeek.com/image/86193/dune) at local boardgame days...
Edit: There's a copy available at the Geek (http://boardgamegeek.com/geekstore.php3?action=listforsale&gameid=121) for $75.

Ok, 8 hours may have been a slight exaggeration, but I don't think I've ever finished in less than 6. Admittedly I haven't played it much, so YMMV. But at least we agree that it isn't a $100 worth of gaming fun.
